K is for Karakoram. The peaks of the Karakoram were surveyed by Thomas Montgomerie in the 1850s and numbered as K1, K2 etc.

Some say that they were numbered in order of height (K2 being erroneously supposed to be lower than Masherbrum): some say that the order was pretty well random. K1 was probably Masherbrum: it wouldn't have been Everest, which is not in the Karakoram.

K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth. It is located in the Karakoram segment of the Himalayan range, on the border[2] between the Gilgit-Baltistan region of the Pakistan administered Northern Areas and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang, China.[1]

Chinese authorities officially refer to K2 as Qogir; simplified Chinese: 乔戈里峰; traditional Chinese: 喬戈里峰; pinyin: Qiáogēlǐ Fēng. This name is derived from Chogori, "a synthetic name made up by Western explorers early in the 20th century from two Balti words, chhogo ('big') and ri ('mountain')."[3] Other names include Mount Godwin-Austen,[4][5] Lamba Pahar ("Tall Mountain" in Urdu), Dapsang, Kechu or Ketu (both derived from "K2"[3][6]).

One in three think Everest is in Europe
One in three Brits thinks Mount Everest is in Europe, according to a new survey.

And half of us do not know the Nile is the world's longest river, reports the Guardian.
The survey was carried out to mark National Geographic's awareness week.
It found that the most visited local "landmark" for many British adults is their nearby DIY store.
A third of people thought Mount Everest was either in the Alps or the UK - it is in Nepal - and only half of respondents knew the Nile was the world's longest river.
Asked which facility had been visited the most during the past month, the DIY superstore came top with 39%, with the local museum bottom with only 9%.
David Lambert, chief executive of the Geographical Association, said: "Geography helps us make sense of the world and face vital issues such as climate change, energy, food production, the 'war on terror', water and poverty."

The important bit was missing;)

I heard about that too. It never shocks me any more just how un-educated the vast majority are. Saddens me, yes, but shocks me, no.

Just to be pedantic - Everest is the highest mountain in the world, but Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world :D

I believe K2 is the most "rated" amongst clibers. High attitude and difficult terrain make it hard to climb.

The first 20000 feet of Muana Kea are probably a total sod, too. Don't forget your oxygen!

If I remember correctly you have a 1 in 7 chance of dying on Everest but only a 3 in 7 chance of survIving K2 :smt087
