The SV R alien has now gone i handed it over on sat to its new owner for a wad of cash that burnt a hole in my pocket so big it only lasted a mere 3 hours
I have now officially moved over to the dark side (quite literally) i am about to be the proud owner of a very blinged up, carbon clad Ducati 749 dark to say i'm excited is an understatement. Its got mirrors lights and indicators and everything i'm going to be so confused riding it :D
Pics to be added when i pick it up on sat but it kinda looks like tonyb's only it has flat paint instead of shiny and its got a few cc's missing.

Its got mirrors lights and indicators and everything...
speaks volumes of ducati's build quality when the highlights for a second hand one are that the lights, mirrors and indicators are still attached and working

Picked the duke up this morning and have been messing about with it for a few hours today. First impressions are Wow it looks so good and sounds absolutely immense however after having had a little ride on it the handling is superb and the brakes are great i'm loving the slipper clutch but it feels so so slow:confused: seriously the sv was quicker then this rattleing tractor
I really dont think its running right at all as its popping and farting all the time on a constant part throttle it also doesnt idle at all when its warm and stalls when coming to a stop. I swapped the racefit can for the stock exhaust as the racefit is blowing and i thought it might be causing the poor running but its still pretty rubbish. Also top speed was struggling to pull 120 so its defo got a problem somewhere :(
Confused at the min and really dishearted with it already. I need to figure out how to raise the idle speed and see if that makes a difference. The starter circuit is crap and i think thats gonna break on it soon as i'm having to constantly restart it after it stalls and the gearbox is a pain in the bum for clutchless upshifts in all i cant see me keeping this very long tbh unless its miraculously different when i get it running properly.
pics of it looking nice before i set fire to it

plans for it are

true but surely it must be better then this
was it raining? sam swears his duke dies in the rain. tonys doesnt seem to have a problem with the rain, but sounds like a tractor lol

nah no rain but it has been sitting in the previous owners garage for some time.
I'm sure i'll figure something out
they all sound like tractors thats part of the charm ;)

Hmmm... Did it come from shop or private sale?
Mine don't die if i take it out in the rain.. usually won't go after it has been ;)
Has your Duke got the right chip fitted for the Zorst? All of them are supposed to come with a chip to stop them running lean with the new pipes fitted. With them being EFI management I would not be tweaking idle etc till i found out a few things about why it aint running right :(
Not sure about the clutch/box on the 749/999 but it's smooth as silk on the 748, whack it right through the box without the clutch no probs.. think yours should be the same, When was the oil last changed, and was it good stuff put back in?
748 pulls 120 in 4th no probs (Crail strip Of course) Think you have some serious issues with it if it's not going past that. They dont seem that fast compaired to the SV till you get it past 6-7k Rpm.. it should go like brown stuff off a shovel from that point till the red line in every gear :smt077
2 Sites of interest for you.. Ducati up north, and Ducati sporting club. Good for info and technical.

Just been reading up and it seems the stalling is a very common problem. The exhaust is just a can so the cat is still fitted unlike when you fit termignoni's and the instructions state that there are no adjustments needed to the fueling so its still on the stock ecu. The racefit exhaust is fooked anyway most of the rivets have been rattled out and its blowing so its staying off for the mo.
looking on the duke forums it seems my throttle bodies need syncronised and the idle defo needs to go up. I have no ecu light on the dash so its not that big a problem it just is in desperate need of a service.
Its 1000miles over due the big service which includes the belts so i think i'll be getting that done asap!!!!
edit... it was a private sale and it was cheeeeeeeep

I see a bike going POP!!! Please don't service it yourself you'll never get rid of it... Ducatis need proper servicing!!!

Service or not to service...ahh that's the question! Options:
1:Take it to Ducati Glasgow - probably looking at £700 but it'll have the wee stamp every magazine tells you you need.
2:Do it youself, hey it's a motorbike and not really that difficult. Worst happens and it blows up in 3 years time, well the £££££'s you saved over the period in rip off servicing will more than buy a new engine. That's the way i look at it. But people from the 'where's the service history mantra' will run a mile!
PS - nice bike, never bloody catch you a Knockhill now....even if I do dust down the old 748 in the garage!

Belts, valve clearance checks need doing properly and stamps or receipts for next owner.. If you plan to sell it any time soon. I still do the rest of the service stuff like oil changes, brakes etc on my own Duke.
Got Ducati receipts for all the service stuff tho.. even the one's for daft stuff like relays and switches!
A folder full of books and lots of bits of paper going back to day one makes for a happy owner.
P.s... there's going to be 5 Ducati track night's up the hill next year, I'm planning to be there for at least 1 if i don't sell it first

I've always serviced my cars and bikes myself i'm an aircraft engineer by trade so i'm pretty confident i'm not going to wreck it. Any monkey can swap the cambelts its seriously like a 30 min job the hardest part is setting the tension correctly and the valve clearances are not difficult either. I've kept the receipts for the items replaced and i make a little record of whats been done i'm not paying circa £700 for somebody else to do it for me.
The only bits i cant do are the stuff that needs the mathesis dealer only tool like the tb balanceing and the tps zero'd which i will have to pay to get done as well as getting the service reminder light turned off.
Found out the root of the problem as to the poor running now.
when i swapped the plugs i found this on the rear cylinder

Nah which i was a bit worried about. I had the bike in work and i used a video probe that we use for checking the internals of aero engines. I had a look down the spark plug hole and back up through the exhaust and its all clear and looks very normal.
something that small will have just whizzed sraight out of the exhaust.
gonna pull the plugs again after i've ran it for a bit just to make sure its not a fueling issue causing that cylinder to run lean.
I'm surprised it even ran on both cylinders tbh with a spark plug gap like that its no wonder it was running poorly.

probably, did the bore look ok and smooth? i'm impressed it managed to expel something like that, it certainly wouldn't have helped the smooth running of the engine having a gap like that:D

What would cause that? cheap plugs?

My thoughts exactly.

Wouldn't have thought so, they're Champion plugs. Not much wrong with them. Ham-fisted gap adjustment perhaps, or dropped on the garage floor prior to (re)fitting would be my guess.
If only all fixes were quite so easy eh?
Hopefully she's sounding like a healthier tractor now Ian - and pulling like a train;) You may post another vid clip of the idle now if you REALLY want to. We don't mind.

Ive owned a few Dukes and always been happy with them.
749 Dark very nice best mod to the dark is a rear shock as standard in the Dark range budget even to the standard 749.
Hope you have fun with it.

Should be going a bit quicker than your Sv now?
