I ask you. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7096814.stm)
You are 19 yrs old, ganged raped 14 times. your attackers get between 1 and 5 years. You are sentenced to 90 lashes for being in a strangers car.
You appeal your sentence and instead your sentence increased to 200 lashes and 6 months in prison. Saudi law needs a kick up the backside. I know they stoned to death one of their own princesses a while back. But I ask you. you have to be punished be getting into a car because you are a woman.
Shhh Mr Wilky, these are our best customers for weapons of war. We need their oil, etc etc...
thats the muslim world and muslim run states for you
Its a funny old world, leave them to it if thats how they want to run their country, and bring our people home.
Iraq is in a worse state than it was before the war. At least Sadam Hussain had control of the animals.

Careful, your beginning to sound like American Foreign Policy.

What he said.
What other reason for countries are there other than for people with similar ideas to band together to protect themselves from outsiders who'd seek to prevent their way of life.
As vile as I and most in the western world find the story in question, it's not really any of our business.

Shocking...but unfortunately nothing new....
I lived in Jeddah for 5 years, and every weekend in the city there were public beheddings and amputations...
Often theft is dealt with by chopping off a hand...mind you, they have come on in leaps and bounds - I believe now you may have an option to choose a sugical amputation rather than a hairy chap with a big axe....
Now thats progress;)
However, our Govt still wants to do business with them eh?
Oh just something else....not sure if this is still the case but, when I was there (late 80's early 90's) some of the richest folk were camel jockeys (big business over there). They tend to be young lads, from 8 up to 15 or so, and have mountains of money to spend. We were in a pretty bad car accident once when a kid in a ferrari decided to to a U turn on the motorway (no central reservations). We went into the back of him at about 70, both cars written off, hospital treatment required, and the driver was about 10 years old...there were no driving tests back then...
Funny thing is, my dad got prosecuted, as, if a foreigner is in an accident, its automatically your fault!!! -Dad ended up in the cells for a night with a broken jaw and fractured skull...
Just another example of the local law....
Often theft is dealt with by chopping off a hand...?
hmmm not a bad idea, maybe we should look at some of their punishments in this country after all.
I know if i caught someone breaking into my house/car or trying to take my bike red handed i would be doig something similar there and then, American history X style!!

.could'nt agree more

Yeah thats about the size of it unfortunately, but I wonder what the locals think ? do they think its acceptable to have there daughters locked up and beaten for being raped ? would be interesting to here there views on the matter , it would make it more balanced dont you think ? btw our guys shouldnt have been down there in the first place (Iraq, Afghanistan, sierra leone etc...) its all about oil and our troops are dying left right and centre, bring em back, let someone shoulder any burden, our troops are worth more than a few gallons of oil.

Nice try, but Saudi Arabia isn't a muslim run state, it's a totalitarian patriarchal monarchy with a veneer of islam on top, to give them greater legitimacy. Or rather, wahhabbism. Sad thing is, there's nothing in the religion to support stuff like this, but it's still going to be used to justify it- one of the problems with religion, it's too easy to abuse.

B Billy I used to drive out there from UK and the first lesson is if you run somebody over in the desert make sure they are dead
A while back I had a old capri and a Saudi Prince ran into the back of me in his Bentley coming back from the races drunk as a lord [A2 London] The police couldn't touch him and wouldn't even stop him from driving and when he flung £500 at me and spat on me I went to clump him and got "Restrained" by the police
They don't value life the same as Westerners and don't even think like us

Was this on TV? I'm sure I saw this on one of those police programmes.

The comment was made on TV but I was doing the job mid 70's and that is probably where it stems from as this was the practice of all western truck drivers.Nobody to blame or claim from you. The incident with the Prince was on the slip A2/Blackheath about 10yrs ago
A sample of the mentality
I had a full fridge of Cadbury Chocolate Swiss Rolls but the customs made me park in the desert compound with the doors open and fridge off for three days.Their reasoning, the paperwork was English and not in Swiss. Result, one soggy melted mess that had to be shovelled out of the fridge and a 18 month insurance claim which was never paid
I have been chastised on this site before for saying what I think of the Arab nation and I have my reasons

Oil, what oil? They keep telling us it's nearly all gone. Jeez - what are they going to do when it's all gone? Sell the sand? It's the only other thing out there...
