Just had my results back from my university, the completely self-funded part time MSc in Information Security and Computer Crime I've been doing the past 3 years has been awarded a distinction (highest possible classification) and 2 lecturers want to help me develop some of my work from my thesis into a paper for publication. :D

I am well happy, time to get looking at other jobs, methinks ;)

That's superb. Well done and all that...

... jobs - hey, if lecturers want you to publish - you could end up spending the rest of your life within the 'closet' of academia and never have to face the real world at all. ;)

Though I wouldn't if I were you... just ask Dr Rich what kind of person that can create!

Get yourself to london for some big £££ then.

I know a guy who works in the docklands, has a nice £0.75m apartment close by with a New £80k Noble and a Focus ST3 parked in the underground carpark.

He works in IT Security for one of the banks based within the Warf

Oh yes, "slack-a-demia" ;)
I've been considering that as a form of 'retirement' after my mortgage etc. have been paid off.

Graeme, yes, IT security for the financial institutions is where the money is. I think I will probably do a few years for the MOD (not directly, via an arms company) first, get the experience under my belt/get accredited, then look at moving into this. Only downside is living in London seems mandatory (no offense to any Londoners, great place, but just not my cup of tea to live there). Maybe live on the outskirts and have a fun commute by bike every morning?

Thanks for the kind words folks. ::

well the obvious plus to London is that you will be eligible to join the Soho Massive! ;)

and anyway there are loads of nice places just outside London, within c. 40 min commmute - HTH with suggestions if you need

Quite possibly. If I do, it'll be full time. I'll also try and wait a couple of years, so I have enough experience in security that I can do freelance consulting during the holidays etc. to part fund it. I'll need to see how the gf's job pans out before I can see if we can afford to do it.

Well here's hoping that everything pans out for a crack at the PhD, because the world really will be your oyster then ... and not just your oyster card ;-) LOL

Well done on getting a distinction. I was *very* close to distinction on my M.Sc. but didn't quite make it. Hope that all works out work-wise for you.

Just had a call from an agency trying to arrange interview dates for me for a job that pays about 30% more than my current one. Ker-ching! :D

Well done mate! You've obviously put some serious work into that. I could have done better at Uni but lacked the necessary self discipline for a top mark, so.... :notworthy:

As said above, get a graduate placement into a large corporate bank doing IT security, if not a bank just make sure the company is big enough and turning good healthy profits 'cos that leads to pay rises and nice annual bonuses. Working for a company that is struggling is ****. Get 10 years experience and expertise, then go freelance consultancy. You'll retire at 45!
