Got a drop something in maidstone tomorrow so have got 260 motorway miles to do. As its works time (and 24p/mile) I though it might be time to see how far an sv will go on a single tankful doing just 70mph the whole way.

What do you reckon?

IIRC there is a lack of pertol stations on the south side of the M25 so this could get intresting.

Full to empty @ 70mph = 160 miles IMO.

Do we win something for getting the closest?

Might be an idea to strap a gallon can to the back, other than that yeah go for it

I have got 168 miles out of a full tank before, but then I don't ride at 70 tends to be a bit more!

Best i have got is riding up through scotland, saw just over 200 miles though i think i was getting close to pushing. Saying that my bike seems to be a bit of an odity... i can easily get 70mpg out of the bike!

Let us know how you fair!

I got to 300kms before filling up on the freeway at 110kmh (about 70mph) - and that was with a dozen bursts to 200.

So if you make an effort- over 200 ;)

Full to empty at 70mph you should easily get 200 miles, maybe not the 260 miles though. Try sticking to 60mph and sit just behind a big wagon - it'll be the most boring ride of your life right up to the point the wagon slams all the brakes on!

I agree with the 200mile+ estimate. I regularly get 160 miles to 13 litres! As you might have guessed, I don't ride very quickly, and most of my riding is a motorway commute.

I have managed 158 to £11 which was about 11.5 litre....so 62mpg

No idea how man litres/miles were left in it but the petrol light hadnt started flashing yet.

That was 70 - 80 mph up the A1.

I would say 200 was easy if you rode very carefully.

If it ocst £11 then that means youll have had about 4-5 liters left in the tank... thats almost a Gallon, so if you ran to fumes youd have pulled off 210+.

See it isnt too bad at all. I think its all about being smooth and using higher gears, and obviously not stopping too often. Except for fuel when your bike is bucking

Out of interest - whats the risk in running the tank empty and running out of fuel totally?

I noticed theres no "NEVER DO THIS" section in the manual (that I saw ;))

I can imagine its a very bad idea.....anyone done it?

yep your bike just stops lol, it goes "Blugh..bluh...blu..." and then you see how long you can coast for then you get off an push with a not so bright look on your face lol, :D

If you are REALLLLLLY unlucky then you will drag the crap jellyfied Petrol from the bottom of the tank. If its been allowed to stand long enough, petrol goes off - so you are better running it low every so often ;). If you do pull the jelly into your carb then you are in a world of pain... well ok maybe not, you have to clean the whole Carb out in worst case. If you have FI its less of a problem.

Like said other issue is pushing the bike! They start to weigh a fair amount quick!

200 miles easily

60mpg devide that by 4.55 = gives you 13.12 miles per litre.

Sooo.

13.12 x 17 litre tank = 223 miles! So you should easily get 200 then hit for the pumps quick!

this makes me wonder.. i can only put £13 in my tank.. at £1.00 a litre shouldnt that be 13 litres ???? it says in my book its a 17 litre tank but?? doesnt make sense... it should be upwards od £17 at least?

Done 180 on a tank a few times desperate to get home without stopping, and then never made it to the petrol station in the morning!

im thinking over 200 easily, im still running mine in and went to southampton form home then to wiltshire, nearly 200 miles, averaging speed of about 70, about 5000rpm, and only had to put about £7 of fuel or something stupid like that in my bike.... so if u ride like a fanny (not that i usually do, and wont be once its had its service!) i say about 245miles!

lol, i reckon i could do 245 miles....... not that i feel like diding that far just to proove a point! lol, i have done 280 miles so far since picking the bike up, and since filling it to the brim 1 mile down the road after i left, i have only put £5 in it and there is loads left!

maybe you should have a shot of seeing how it will go? hehe

Well, unfortuantley due to other peoples mistakes I didn't get the run I wanted, I left later and had to travel further on non-motorway roads. I also had to go a little quicker otherwise my day was getting silly long.

But driving sensibley not fast/slow and crusing between 75-90 I managed 171 and put 15.1 liters in the tank, so it would have done about 190?

I reckon that 220 is achiveable if you are really careful, crusing about 65. Has anyone been further than this? 245 sound like really good going possibley sitting behind an artic for the whole trip

I average about 180 id say, thats generally A-B road riding. What are people doing that average less? Only use the first 3 gears?

Be aware that you can lose fuel if it's sitting out in the sun. I had that. On the reserve and then parked it before going on holiday for a week. Came back and managed 1 mile before it spluttered and died.

I ride 100 miles a day on my commute and I fill up EVERY day ... From when I fill up, to first warning light is approx 100 miles ... but then I ride it HARD down about 50 miles of motorway. Rest of the way is A-roads and can be very stop/start, plenty of overtaking (making progress) too. I reckon I could probably stretch it for a little bit further cos I always top it up as soon as the warning light comes on (which takes anywhere between £10 - 13, depending on how the journey has been).

I ran out at 195 miles a few months back 300 yards from petrol station. It was a calculated risk based on my estimated mpg over that tank full and when the fuel light came on. I thought I was good for 200 miles but alas stopped just short. Fortunately I didn't have far to push the bike. I wasn't riding particularly slowly either, just economically. Changing gear between 6-7k rpm sitting at 6.5k rpm ish in top gear. Engines are at there most economic at constant speed so the less acceleration/deceleration the better. Of course there is an optimum engine speed for greatest economy in top gear, not sure what that would be on the sv tho. I think on a run at the standard 56mph the sv would get well over 200 miles from a tank full but what fun would that be? :)

I did 211 miles on my last tankful commuting from Leeds to Manchester and back again on the M62 at between 60 and 70 mph. When I filled it up it took 14.7 litres. The bike is 6 months old with 2000 miles on the clock. I'm sure I can easily get 230 miles out of a tankful, which is important in these days of pound a litre fuel.

I did a 180 mile blast to leeds from Oxford and didnt use the whole tank. The fuel indicator light was on but flashing so still a fair few miles left in the tank. I was doing between 75-90mph depending on traffic, so a steady 70 should see you doing 200 miles plus easily. I do have a double bubble, and spend most of the ride lying on a tank bag to get out of the wind - I'm not sure how much more efficient a flip screen makes the bike, not too much i imagine.
