Ok.... genuine or fake????? Tonight i was "talked into" having my fortune told, thing is this guy has told me something that has deeply disturbed me. Anyone ever been told anything that has come true? I have even broken my mid week rule and bought a bottle of wine on the way home!!!

Umm, never been to one or now ppl that have but I would have thought its mostly bull, where do they get the info? Going by that its an unreliable source!

If they can read the future, where are the lotto numbers that I need to win....u know what they say to that "it doesn't work like that" umm whatever.

would rather not go into it but suffice to say "if" what he said was true then it disturbs me. This stranger told me things that were uncannily accurate and made me think "how does he know that!" that`s whats playing on my mind..

A bit of research on cold readings might throw up some techniques you recognise were used on you and help put your mind at rest. Try here (http://www.gypsypsychicscams.com/cold-reading.html).

And if she's driven you to drink don't forget to say thank you! :)

it's about as accurate as tea leaves.

Predicting something is not the same as knowing something - it's all guess work. City boys make millions on stocks and shares - doesn't mean that they can see the future - just predict the ebbs & flow of the system.

My horoscope say's: Aquarius, 1st November: For centuries fire was a sacred symbol of vitality and strength. Keep this in mind as you roll around frantically on your kitchen floor this Thursday.

doesn't mean it'll come true. It's just a bit of fun.

Now, don't be soft & tell us what Gypsy Doris said!!

hmmm, can you still call them gypsies?

Or should it be Romany Doris? Domicille-challenged Doris?

Derren Brown did a feature where he gathered a group of sceptics together, told them how fortune tellers worked and that he could actually do it. He said that instead of giving a vague reading he would give each of them an individually specific reading, personal to them. The whole group couldn't believe how accurate they all were, and questionned whether he'd researched on them prior to the show. Derren then asked them to pass them round to each other - they were all the same.

It's such rubbish, how couldn't it be!? spirits do not exist and if they did they wouldn't talk to old hippies with beads on their head.

Do they say specifics? or stuff thats quite general and can be easily interpreted, much like horoscopes?

Yep, it's all done with cold reading techniques. Not to say all fortune tellers are willfully fake, some people are just naturally good at it and assume their "power" is otherworldly. A good book about this stuff is pseudoscience and the paranormal by Terrence Hines

they prey on the weak. i dont mean that in an offensive way, i mean weak as in you will give signals when he/she is searching for information, the words they use are generally ambiguous and its you that turns them into how you want to hear them

My 2 related jokes on this subject:

1. It's impossible to find a "happy medium", they talk to dead people all the time...

2. I couldn't ever be one of those people who talk to the dead. To do that you need to be a medium. I've always been an extra large...

As I started to read this thread I had a pop-up offering me a free Psychic reading. Did that make me think 'Wow, there are more things in heaven and earth....'? Did it Hell.

It's rubbish, pure and simple. I could make a series of predictions, and by pure chance one of them could come true, it wouldn't make me a psychic. Don't lose a moments sleep over whatever you were told.

In that case you've got some lovely spyware ;) It often relates adverts to whatever twaddle is on the screen. Definitely not the work of gypos unless the land of the dead now has broadband?

Well i think the over riding census of opinion is that they`re fake so i`ll stop worrying bout what i was told. Some of what he said was spot on accurate and some of his "predictions" would be great if they came true but i think that as has been said here..... you give away of lot of personal info without even realising it!!! they`re obv very clever at manipulating!

I only went to help a friend out and really wish i hadn`t bothered. I won`t be seeing any more "fortune tellers" my future can stay a mystery :D

i saw a fortune teller a few times, years ago, most of what i was told has been very true, she knew things that no one could have known.
i saw a phsycic a few weeks ago and he too knew things that he couldnt possibly know! his predictions are very similar to what i was told years back! in fact some for the future are exactly the same........ thats very scary,
there are some phsycics who get it all wrong, and are very vague about the past, i wouldnt listen to these.... go with the ones who suprise you by knowing facts!!
ill definately go again!

if you have heard a predicion about the future, isn't it possible that you maybe change your life to enable these predictions to happen, i.e, you will meet a tall dark handsome man, so you go out looking for one, increasing the chances of this prediction to come true? Much in the same way that you adapt the comments the fortune teller has said to your own life.
i would like to go and see what a fortune teller has to say about me, but im too scared that i will hear something that would perhaps might not want to hear and waste my life dwelling on it.
