View Full Version : My helmet smells all cheesy
Get your minds out of the gutter you filthy pervs.
Having worn my lid for a minimum of 2 hours a day every day for the last year or so, I've found that the interior is getting a bit pongy. What can I do?
(Other than wash more often, obviously. I want something achievable...)
Take the padding our and give a damn good hand wash. I know you can defo do it on my shoei and Arai
You can do mine as well seems as your doing Graeme's.

If you can take the padding out. Then get some mild baby shampoo and rub that into it and then rinse it off and then leave it somewhere to dry it out.
I've washed a couple of lids like that gets them nice and clean and as the baby shampoo is mild theres no danger IMHO of ruining anything. One of them didnt have removable padding, so I just used the shower to damp it down and then rinse it out again once I was finished...

Limit yourself to wearing the helmet when you're on the bike?
I know it might feel great round the house and in the pub but ...
If you cant get the padding out without destroying it, you can clean it using a damp cloth. if that fails Mrs Mogs recommends you store it with the visor closed and put a few sheets of bounce in it.
i don't use shampoo on my hair - it cleans itself. This helps keep it fresher inside my lid.
Had it for 1.5 years & it's never needed cleaning.

Open all the vents, go for a long ride in the country on a fresh day.
Lovely

If you don't have removable linings take it in the shower with you, massage the linings with baby shampoo and rinse.

If you can't take ALL the lining out (not all lids are 100% removable) - I have washed my complete helmet with normal clothes washing powder/tablet in the sink. Then rinse it and let it dry in the airing cupboard ... you will need to leave it in there a couple of days, to dry fully so plan that in ...
I remember reading a while ago.................can't remember where.............that putting your crash helmet in the freezer overnight works. It freezes the bacteria that cause the pong, apparently. Anyone else heard of this?

Yes indeed.Freezing works for smelly boots and trainers,so why not helmets?
It kills off the bacteria that cause the nasty niffs.
What kind of cheese does it smell of exactly?
Kind of a stiltony camembert. Does that change the cleaning procedure?

absolutely - you're gonna have to get some grapes as well...
This is why I have 2 helmets...
A guy in the riders digest recommends putting aromatherapy oils in your helmet so that you're calmer when you get to work. Maybe you can mask the cheesey smell with something else, unless you find the current smell soothing in which case you could regard the odour as a bonus rather than a negative (maybe :???:)

Dove soap.
Great stuff, cleaned up the AGV last week, it's like a new lid :D

surely putting it in the freezer or getting the inside wet could damage the fibreglass?!

Whenever I get a round of washing where I've left it too long in the washing machine and it gets that damp smell.. I would often rinse the whole lot in some disinfectant before washing it again in the machine.
Rinse for no more than 5 mins with diluted Milton (http://www.milton-tm.com/) - the baby disinfectant, works a treat as it sterilizes the bad bacteria, but doesn't actually bleach everthing white (of course unless you add it directly on the clothes which I did once :p)
So if you have removeable pads (or want to risk dipping the whole helmet)... reckon it should work a treat!
what a coincidence! my penis smell of cheese too....
whoda thunked it
Have you been secretly wiping your penis inside my helmet?

I saw this morning and it made me laugh a lot! Even talked about with a mate at work....umm chesse!!
Being serious, can you remove the lining and the padding if so give it a dam good wash!! Otherwise I know some lids you can wash under the shower and give them a real good wash, but it will take a while to dry out! The way around this is to have 2 lids, so u have another to use while it drys out....
I know you can get something from the bike shops, to fresh up lids but have no clue what it is called. Well I hope you sort the cheese problem.....
One question what cheese does it smell like?;)

It should be noted that this thread is becoming bad and wrong!!

I don't know what it's called either - but I have got a can of this.
You're welcome to borrow it if you like Jaime. You just spray it inside (it goes all foamy) and wipe away with a damp cloth. Dries much quicker than if you do the whole soap / soaking it with loads of water thingy.
