4 miles- that's why. Modern diesels are ****e when they're cold. You'll be getting between 10-15mpg for the first few miles

would letting it tick over for a few mins b4 driving help?

Short Journeys in a diesel, big no no for MPG.
You think thats bad, I used to get 20 - 25mpg out of my Golf on a good day, but it was a huge amount of fun.
No, diesels don't warm up the same as petrol engines at a tick over, you need to drive them to warm them up.
i take it, thats why on the way to work im freezing my nuts off cos the heaters are still cold.
yep!
On a run up to yorkshire to see the folks I get 50-55mpg from my old 106 1.5d at a steady 75-80mph. I can get there and back on one tank of juice :) and still have near a quarter of a tank left.

i hate diesels. mainly when it's your work van that's only a 1.4 (with no turbo or anything like that) and is scary to pull onto a roundabout with because it's soooo fookin slow!! :(
Think that's bad?
My Merc 1.8 litre auto is doing about 20mpg around town (:drink:<===== drinking too much!)
I managed to get my Dad's 4.6L Range Rover down to 8mpg on my daily commute. On LPG.

have the same engine in my van... (if its the 1.3 CDTI??) what a powerplant....not.
I tend to get about 45-50mpg driving it pretty hard as its so slow...but admittedly I dont do short journeys....or pay for the fuel...:)

+1 same car, i've had 430 miles out of a tank before (£25'ish)
mines incredibly torque'y though, the front struggles to find traction and bounces of the limiter, i think I'll put the spare wheel on the bonnet and call it a rally conversion :smt105
you are only going 4 miles so whats the problem.
Just thrash the b*****d
Or use a chicken chaser
1.3 diesel DDDooooohhhhhhhhhh

You should get more than that out of it unless your thraping it. Yep diesels are less efficient when cold, just like petrols, but not that much. My mrs takes our 1.5 diesel Renault to work which is 2 miles away and the mpg drops from 50 to low 40s. To say they are doing 10-15 mpg for first few miles is c**p.
We do some work with Opel (same as vauxhall) and that engine is a good 'un. CO2 figures below 120g/km - that's efficient.

Its the fiat engine, 1250cc multijet diesel. Its one of the best diesels out there at the moment.
The UK only gets the 75bhp version (i think) but over here there a 90bhp versions and some Lancias have 105bhp from the same engine.
Get the corsa out on a good run, get in upto temperature etc.... I have had 70mpg out of Pandas with the same engine. Surely for 4 miles its barely worth getting in a car!!
Get the corsa out on a good run, get in upto temperature etc.... . !!
but work is only 3-4 miles away? do you sugest i go the long way round? or move house?:p
Surely for 4 miles its barely worth getting in a car!!
i know............
but i work shifts, so public transport is no good,
its not worth unlocking motorbike and getting kitted up
to cold to cycle
anywho, its the new shape corsa (which is bigger than the older one)
i have had all 3 shapes of corsa 1.3td and this is by far the worst on diesel its the limited edition 110bhp not the 90,
I get 36mpg out of Vernas 1.6L petrol Lupo

Yep - Opel and FIAT share a lot of engine technology, and until recently had combined development under FGP (FIAT-GM Powertrain). It wa a good idea cos GM were good at petrol engines and FIAT were good at diesels. That marriage all went t**s up but they still share several engines.

50-52 mpg from my Mondeo 2.0 TDCi. The computer is actually pessimistic and read about 2mpg less than this, but I work it out by writing my mileage on my fuel receipts (sad I know but it's mostly business mileage so I like to make sure I'm getting my money back!!)

GM (Ok, FIAT) 1.9 TiD here (150 BHP). Getting about 36.5 around town - 5 mile commute. Heater won't blow warm air until I'm at work. Heated seats help ;-)

That sort of mileage commuting is no good for any engine - it's barely had time to warm up the oil before you're switching it off. Rapid engine wear will result in crap fuel mpg.
My old faithful '96 Pug 1.9 diesel van returns 40mpg over a weeks commute. I've to thrash it too to get it anywhere a decent speed. Don't use the car to commute as it rips thru petrol at 28mpg. Don't buy a 2.0i 16v for commuting or get stuck in a traffic jam - just watch the petrol gauge plummet.
Put in a really good sem-synthetic diesel oil, and change all the filters. Also try flushing the diesel lines. There might be tiny bits of crap which means the injectors aren't managing to get clean diesel to burn. You might find the mpg increases after you service the engine.
That engine is highly efficient, and should return you 45-50mpg even on short haul trips. Try going a longish trip to clear the carbon deposits out of the engine.
The Punto and Corsa share the same platform too ;)
Saab also use/Vauxhall also use their engines.
I'd agree with everyone, needs some heat in it. Those engines are belters. Record breaking. Pushed a VX220 style chassis to 150+mph constent, and over 112mpg, for ver 24 hours!!! Great engine, just needs warming for it to be usefull.
Problem is then, you want to do a semi long journey, then you just want the 1.7TD engine.... Doh..
Or pack up, but a 2.0 tubby 4 pot, and be extremly happy to make 30mpg (mind u, the astra averages 25-28mpg).

£1 for 10 miles is about 48mpg if that helps anyone.
The 1.9 VW TDI seems more efficient than my Ford 1.8TDCI :( But mines got a bigger turbo ;)
Edit, just get an 888 Astra.
150+mph, 45mpg still.......

Only if driven like a nun, my Astra should give 40+ according to the book but goes out the window if you actually press the go pedal.
nahh the 888 really does return silly high numbers on normal driving. Drops to like 30mpg when the loud pedal is pressed.
The VXR sees 6.7mpg at full chat :(

135 miles range on a full tank for the VXR8
 nice 6.0 V8 under the bonnet..
Considered one for the next car, but its not gonna fit in the garage, and i'd be on the happy gas all the time
Managed to clear 52 litres in 110 miles on a track day. Then 3 more fillups :(

I also looked at one but the fuel bill puts me off, I do 30,000 miles a year. So I have started looking at the new 350Z
350Z Nismo? ;) The supercharged one... Couldn't catch one of those mofos on the M1

Running twin 50's on a modded lump :)
Yeah see thats not quite standard running on 50"s is it
4.5mpg in a NA small 4 pot is mental juice drinking. Take it she was setup for pure all out high end revs and power then
