View Full Version : Fly Free my gorgeous boy

For those of you who hadn't met him, Fred was a gorgeous little blue/violet budgie.
He may have been just a bird to some people but Fred had been in my life for 13 years (since i was 10 years old), he was the one i told all my secrets to as a teenager, the one who would cuddle up to me on my shoulder when i was sad and the one who would make me laugh when i needed cheering up. He would tweet morning when we came down in the mornings and chirp at us when we went to bed at night. He was always so happy to see us.
A few days ago, he hurt his leg whilst he was staying at mums, we went to the vets yesterday and the vet told us it wasn't broken and could indicate kidney problems as that and nerve damage are related in birds. I wasn't meant to collect him until Sunday but he came home with me after the vets as i am more confident handling him than mum. James and i went to bed after giving him a hot water bottle to keep warm and covering him over with a towel.
I came down this morning to see that Fred hadn't made it through the night. My heart is breaking typing this but i know he is in a better place and is no longer in pain. I did everything i could for him and James and i are going to take him out later on and put him somewhere nice to rest.
With the Joy that pets give us, must come the sorrow of losing them when it's their time to leave us. I'll miss him so much!

Sorry to hear that Sam ... only ever saw my dad cry twice ... once when his mother (my nana) died, and once when the family pet labrador died ... broke my heart just looking at his face then ... he was so forlorn when he climbed back into the car with just the lead in his hand, and he just uttered to me "lets go home ... just drive please".
Dumb animals they may be to some, but they can bring a lot of joy and comfort to us too.
RIP Fred.
I lost a budgie when I was about 13 and was also devastated. My thoughts are with you Sam..
Sorry to hear about your loss Sam. People don't realsie that when you lose a pet you lose a family member.
Only those who have known the true companionship of a so-called 'pet' can understand how deeply their loss can be felt. They can be closer than family or friends, for they do not judge, merely reflect your own true self.
My thoughts are with you Sam.

I understand, I was upset for weeks when our family pet, a cat named Sooty, died. My mum was pretty upset too. I think everyone was, even my dad might have been (although he was pleased he didnt have to do litter tray duties anymore)
Bye bye fred, RIP

Aww bless :( I remember feeling a teensy bit guilty that I cried floods of tears when my golden retriever died but not a drop when my great grandad passed on. In many ways I think losing a pet is worse, you kind of expect humans to pass on but you somehow never really think it'll happen to a pet.

Sad day.
Felt the same when I lost my 13 year old spaniel earlier this year.

I know I'm an idiot, I'm not witty enough to do better.
I am really sad for you Sam, I didn't even know birds lived that long.
Sorry to hear this Sam, always horribly sad to lose a pet.
RIP little guy.

He's got a point, 13 years is a very long time for such a small animal. How long do they usually live for?

Oh Sam, that's awful for you hun. Sounds like Fred had a lovely life with you though, and what better way to go than in a warm bed in familiar surroundings with people who care about you. Dig through your photo's, buy a lovely frame, and when you feel you want to put Freds cage etc away, put the photo somewhere prominant so you have your Fred on display.
Or, buy your frame, put Freds piccy on display, and clean Freds cage and leave it sparkling until you're ready to buy another feathered friend to cherish!!
I know that our pets personalities can NEVER be replaced, but sometimes even the tiny pets leave a void in our lives when they go. My cat is a complete pain in the derriere but I love her regardless.
Big hugs hun. x

It's not unknown for them to reach 16 years old... the oldest budgie recorded living up to 27 years i think. They are hardy little creatures, with funny little personalities. He was so funny, always shouting at me when i got home and wouldn't be quiet until i went to say hello to him. He was a good little talker to.
Here's just a couple of videos of him taken last year.

Aw Sammy hunny, i'm so sorry to hear this
I had the pleasure of meeting this (now) famous Fred and he was a cool little dude. No fear of all those peeps in your house that afternoon after the rideout and he even sat on my head for a while i seem to remember.
I really liked him and i'd only known him an hour or so....so can only image how big a loss he is too you.
Be strong and imagine how much flying about he can do in bidry heaven
:grouphug: for you xx
They may be only small but they certainly play a big part in our lives, my dog, Dennis the menace , is nearly 14 now, dreading the day tbh, keep your chin up mate.
Sorry to hear about Fred :(

Indeed there is little more devestating than losing a Pet. Im sorry to hear you are having to go through that!
I lost a dog a couple of months ago, poor lass was old, 16 years old (we had her for about 15), which for a lurcher is pretty ancient!
Very upsetting experience!
Made my dad Cry which is Very unusual! Damn writing this actually is upsetting me a little.
Here is to life and to the animals which help make it more colourful!

Slipped the surly bonds of earth for good. Go on yourself wee man.
RIP Fred :(
I meant to post on this yesterday, but the subject was a bit too close to my heart to be able too. I haven't seen my evil old ginger cat for a week now, and I've finally faced the fact that he isn't coming home.
My deepest sympathies for the loss of Fred:(

:( i'm sorry to here about your cat :( fingers crossed that he may still come home.
We went out and buried Fred last night in the woods where we go training with Lupo, we found a nice spot amongst the trees. We buried him with his favourite toy and said goodbye.
We went back up there at 8 this morning to run the dogs on the scooters, its nice to feel that he is flying along side us when we run.
Thank you all for your kind comments, it has meant a lot to me reading through them.
