View Full Version : T-Shirt & Shorts
Why do some bikers think t-shirts and shorts are cool?
They not only look stupid they clearly are stupid.
We all know who will have the last laugh, albeit a sweaty one.
Id rather be sweaty and ride again eh..
Nah but generally, why. Its not big and it sure aint clever.
but it keeps you cool (as in not hot )
i have not rode in shorts, but i have in a t-shirt
Mesh jacket with armour. As cool as you like. Not expensive.

It always makes me cringe when I see riders wearing t-shirts, and you quite often see a pillion with the same amount of protection too.
Its another personal choice issue. If they want to do it I have no problem with that, but you won't find me doing it.
The only time I ride without any protection is when I turn the bike around outside my house and back it down the drive.

or guys in jeans and leather jackets with a hot girl in a bikini on the back. It'd be such a waste- ouch!

+1 much safer than a t-shirt, not noticeably any warmer. I'd not to any motorway trips on it (negligible abbrasion resistance), but for shorter/slower trips in hot weather I think they're ideal.

There was a time when everyone wore jeans and a leather (or denim!) jacket , nobody had CE armour, only riders with race reps had leather race suits and they were all poofs trying to copy the racers, and the colour schemes were as bad as the bikes. Only grown men over the age of 35 and police wore leather trousers.
Of course a hot bikini girl on the back was commonplace too
I couldn't afford leather trousers when I was a teenager, 250 quid for leather bikers jacket, gloves and a cheap lid was bad enough. 10 weeks money off a Saturday job. I still ride in jeans in the summer quite a lot.
I wouldn't ride in T shirt and shorts, I have ridden in a T shirt when I was younger, wouldn't do it now, but it's a personal choice. Get over it.

I, decide what I wear on a bike and adjust my riding accordingly.

Last summer when it was roasting on some days, I did ride in shorts, albeit with boots, jacket, helmet, gloves, etc... and yes I knew it was very risky, I rode accordingly to reduce the risk.
Since then, I've bought some strap-on knee armour which is much cooler when it's hot than proper leggings or even jeans.
Would never ride without some sort of jacket though!

Female pillion in short denim skirt and strappy top does look great, but lets face it, SPF 15 is no protection in an off.

Why do some bikers think t-shirts and shorts are cool? Wouldnt necessarily agree with that! More the fact they are prob just hot or lazy.
They not only look stupid they clearly are stupid. :-s Why this? Its personal preference and i'm sure they dont get on the bike and not think of risks, the kit is available 9 times outta ten, people choose not to wear it. Not stupid, just confident, or bone idle.
We all know who will have the last laugh, albeit a sweaty one. True
Id rather be sweaty and ride again eh..
Can understand where your coming from, but having done it myself a few times can see why people do it. Yes its a silly thing to do and i still tend to ride around in jeans quite a lot as they are more practical (yes i know, i wont be that practical if i come off). Dont necessarily see that many people ride around in shorts that much, and think i have only done it once, and that was for all of 50 yards (if that). It is down to the rider to know and understand the risks, if, they want to not adhere to these then so be it. If they come off its their arms and legs that get scraped.
If they come off its their arms and legs that get scraped. ... and some poor sod from the emergency services or council highways that has to peel the skin off the road... yuk!
Stupid - anymore than other dangerous activities? yes simply because you aren't using the right kit to do what you're doing - would you jump out of plane without a parachute? Don't answer that - I can see a stupid reponse coming!.
Naieve, immature, typically childish? more like it.
Choice? yes if you want to be stupid then good for you. but then some folk would regard the riding of a motorcycle to be stupid - where do you draw the line. At common sense perhaps?
To sum up, if you only wear jeans/t-shirt riding a bike then yes you're a dumbo numpty IMVHO

when in Spain, if on long fast runs I would normally wear protective gear, .i.e. mesh jacket, boots, gloves etc but if I am bimbling around town at 30kph, I sometimes wear a T shirt, no gloves, jeans and trainers.
If I have the inteligence to make an informed choice that would only ever affect me from a safety perspective, why, in your opinion does that make me stupid ?

I think you've answered your own question! You certainly made the choice which may or may not be informed but whether it could be classed as intelligent or not Is perhaps debatable. To increase your risk of injury by a significant amount may been seen as lacking intelligence to many (if not the most). Previous posts about off's have described nasty injuries suffered and very low speeds whilst wearing the appropriate kit. It may be regarded (even with limited intelligence) after reading those posts that to wear little or no protection riding even at low speeds is, well, stupid. :clown:
Unfortunately accidents never just affect the person injured. I'd be interested to know what employment you are in... I've been in the building industry for a number of years and seen some nasty stuff just because some plum wouldn't wear protective kit. Not only did they seriously regret it (mainly cos it hurt) but their colleagues had to witness the events/mess - often not nice. Quite selfish when you think about it?

Call the response stupid if you like I won't care.
It's not more dangerous than any other dangerous activities.
Jumping out of a plane without a parachute means certain death, getting on a bike without leathers doesn't. They are not comparible at all.
Jumping out of a plane with a parachute, now thats comparible, 'cos the chute might not open (don't know what the odds are but it does happen), you might break a leg on landing, just the same as riding without leathers you might come off and loose your skin.
Seems reasonable - I don't wear leathers/ body armour on my mountain bike (maybe I should) although have seen over 40mph on it, and I came off pushbikes plenty of times when I was younger with no serious harm. If you're not leaving a 30 limit round town its not likely to make much difference apart from a few grazes if you come off.

Ok I get your point - well sort of, but I can't thinking you're just trying to justify a stupid action.

I wear proper gear all the time but I would never make a fuss about people wearing t-shirt and shorts on a bike. A bit daft? yes, perhaps; but don't look at them and automatically assume that's how they always ride their bike. They could be just popping around the block to dry their bike out, post a letter etc. Just keep your eye on the road and stop being such old women ;)
I always wear my gear, except..
one day I was riding the bike less then half a mile away to swim in a local reservoir, I wore shorts and t shirt then ..... but I think the bikini underneath would have saved me! I did feel vulnerable, and its not something I would do regularly, but there was no way i was putting on all my kit for that .... I guess very occasionally it just has to be done ;)
Go on, lecture me about swimming in resser's now! :D

Just see what you look like after you slide down the road wearing jeans and t-shirts, well what the limbs you have left will look like! Crap on the road will in bed itself into your skin, people have lost limbs months afterwords because of the infections!
I see a guy quite often on a ZX6R in the summer with his shorts, t-shirt, helmet, gloves and boots on.

Been there, got the T Shirt (excuse the pun), no skin down the right side of my body, from my right tit to the outer ball of my foot. Some daft old woman in a Nissan Micra pulled out on me.
It healed, still ride in jeans when it suits me, and I know only too well to take extra care.

There's a difference between giving your opinion and preaching.
I haven't told anyone else what to do, said anyone elses opinion is wrong, or passed judgement on anyone else. I've only given my opinion and told other people what I do. I love reading other peoples opinions and I love debate, which is why I'm here.
I do get a bit jerked off with a whole thread of folk telling others that they are stupid and wouldn't do what they do if they knew what grazed skin was like. I don't mind admitting that and don't apologise for it.

Personal choice, I wouldnt do it, others do, I dont care.
Put it another way, I ride my pedal bike on the flat at around 20mph, if I launch myself down a particualrly steep hill I can clock anywhere between 40 - 50mph. I do this whilst wearing shorts and a t-shirt and a helmet.
Whats the difference between doing it on a pedal bike or a motorbike... none results are the same, one seems to be socially acceptable the other doesnt. Weird eyh..

If you saw me in Lycra shorts it probably wouldn't be socially acceptable, but was the same point I was trying to make. I wear appropriate gear now when possible, and as long as people are aware of the risks that's their choice. I was not aware when younger of the need for protective gear other than a cheap helmet, and the CBT is slightly better trying to get this across. I would try to make a comment to another biker if I thought they were putting themselves at risk due to poor protection. I love my draggin' combats, very comfortable/warm - good enough compromise for me as I don't want to wear armour/leathers all the time.

easy fellas!
everyone is entilted to wear what they like, personally, after seeing my mates injuries i would'nt ride in a t-shirt, i do and have rode in jeans, but i always have a jacket on and gloves etc... its all well and good saying that you take extra care when dressed in say lighter clothing , BUT you dont control others actions, ****e happens...
i mean lets face it you come off on a public road at speed it dont matter what your wearing..because 9 times out of 10 your dead anyway...
i wear leathers etc to be as safe as i can be, i'd rather sweat than bleed....

in summer, i remove the thermal lining on my jacket (has built in armour)... however.
I dont tuck my jacket sleeves into my gloves, this means i get cool air blowing up my sleeves and down my back... which feels dandy. Beats wearing t shirts and jeans anyday.

Also, my mate's dad was riding with just a t shirt on and he got hit by a wasp and it made a rather nasty hole in his chest. was like being shot at.

I'm not sure what your definition of speed is, but a 90% fatality rate is surely rubbish! I know/have heard about people who have crashed going fast and most of them are still around.
Also at speed it matters far more what you are wearing. If i know i'm going to be riding fast and pushing my limits, then its leathers all the way.

yeah fair enough a bit exaggerated i admit but you know what i mean, 50-60mph+ in built up areas can be lethal:shock:, some bikes are that quick these days its easily done.

Personally don't ride without my gear on but was interested to see the Spanish bike cops last year - they only kind of protection they had was boots and open face helmets. Short sleeved shirts, no gloves, trousers and no jackets - didn't seem to bother them and it didn't bother me that they were attired like that.

Country ride yes, country blast no. Riding in jeans makes you feel vulnerable and does wonders for killing speed, reducing lean angles and sharpening your observation.
