View Full Version : Fire bike!
Just heard this on the radio and found it on the BBC Website...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7115077.stm
Its the Fire bike, a BMW R1200RT with extra large tanks designed to put out car fires apparently.
So new job maybe? Think its a fad or useful? Opinions please...

We have a new system on our pump known as CAFS ( Compressed Air Foam System ). It basically comprises of minute soap soap/crystals that expand to foam when in contact with water.
Water is used as a Firefighting medium to cool, where as this is use to smother and is better for vehicle fires. It uses a lot less water so there's no need for huge water tanks.
I can see the idea but not sure its completely practical.
 Will come in handy when people start using these to have hot dinners on the road...
Who's Hungry?
Be it fire, flood or mass evacuation, emergency service personnel need to eat.
Hot Pack meals give new meaning to the term "just add water" - but this is no pot noodle.
A tiny amount of water added to the outer box creates a chemical reaction that gives you piping Lancashire hot pot or vegetable curry in a pouch in just 10 minutes without the need for fire, flame or heat of any sort.
Philip Goding from Hot Pack said when it comes to supplying emergency services, a hot meal matters.
"This is something that gives somebody a morale boost as well as a hot meal," he said of the instant dinners.
I'm pretty sure this was tried with instant coffee cups a while back that went faulty and burst into flames...

An urban myth unfortunately.
Instead they turned....luke warm.
They cost a fortune and had a tiny bit of coffee in. A bit of a flop really. :smt024

Hotcans hang from the highest branch on the minging tree.
They are truely awful, I think there designed like that so FF finish the job quickly and get back to the station for proper grub.

Sorry to be a cynic but it seems like a complete gimmick to me.What is a single person on a bike going to do at a fire?
What is it with the emergency services these days? The cops send no one at all,the fire bods send a two wheeled BMW and the ambulance service send a car or a bike.Anything but send the actual resources required.

Bikes get places fast in big cities.Fire response times in big cities are around the six minute mark.So whats the point? All these things are really for is to stop a clock which is measuring response times. Thus government targets appear to be met, even though there is no fire engine (or ambulance or whatever)actually there.
A cynical con trick whick dont fool a real cynic like me.:(
