I'd like it to be JT - however IMO it's far more likely to be LH.

Having said which, - if Ricky Hatton can defeat whatshisface in a couple of weeks time - he could be worth a bet - really depends on how much press is given to it.

isnt it voted by the public??? so it will probably be the sport and person who has had the most press coverage this year, one thing is for sure it wont be any footballer this year!!

LH makes me laugh. An astonishing debut season I admit, but he did not win the championship. It also makes me smile the arrogance that after 1 season in the spotlight he brings out a book!

More deserving for me would again be someone like Paula Radcliffe or Jason Robinson.

It's whittled down to 10 by a panel of judges and then you get to vote on the night for one of the 10.
Would dearly like to see JT up there but he won't be. I even voiced my opinion on the BBC's 606 site, not that I think it will make any difference.

The whole SPOTY thing is a joke IMO, motorsport in general isn't given the press space it deserves, F1 has been a slight exception to that rule this year with the conterversy of the spygate saga and the intro of LH into the fold, however in general it just doesn't get the coverage. Without coverage the average Joe won't have even heard of JT or even Andy Priaulx, the World Touring Car Champion, whom just happens to be a Brit.

SPOTY! How is anyone supposed to make an informed choice when the media are intent on only covering a small handful of the many great sports and sports persons this country has to offer.

I'm slightly bias toward motorsport as this is what I enjoy but there are many others which don't get represented.

I see I've prattled on a bit but it just really bugs me!

Well, it won't be Frank Lampard

Got to say that I agree with Hovis et al about Joe Calzaghi.............. World Champ for years and now holder of all 4 World Titles. Fantastic achievement and will be getting my vote.

Lewis hamilton with win it one year, but not this (I hope). LH is on Top Gear this week as "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" where's he's trying to beat The Stig's lap record. Should be great telly :)

I agree with the book thing, its a joke!

LH isnt a sports 'personality' as far as i know he hasnt done much to show any personality really! Just a joke if he wins. It is a sports popularity conterst imo!

JT should win as he has a good personality and is a great champ, one that entertains and just gives the fans a lot to cheer about i mean look at brandhatch! WOW what a day!

I dont think it even made the news that he was the new champ you know! BBC are jokers... i mean golf, who the hell wants to know about some fat old man who rides a cart around a field with holes it it? I dont men its a bad sport, its pretty good to play im guessing but it is hardly entertaining!

Sigh. I put this on 606 too...

I think it'll be Hamilton. I agree JT should be on the list, Minority Sports have no chance in this kind of thing. Another world champion theres no mention of is Victoria Pendleton. 3 Gold medals in this years world cycling track championships and not one mention in the mainstream press and she'd make good televisual viewing to IMHO.

I think the true candidates from the British sporting ranks are this year very limited. There are not many out there who have excelled or captivated people. Unfortunately there are very deserving individuals but unless their achievements spill over and gain the interest of non sporting viewers, then they are likely to be overlooked.

Football over the last 12 months has been full of more politics than uplifting performances and I think that England's non qualification for Euro 2008 just about nipped in the bud the chances of any footballer.

Boxing is very much non PC these days and boxers receiving the award are less likely in the future.

Paula Radcliffe has performed brilliantly for many years against the best in the world, a very self effacing lady and true inspiration.

Being a big rugby fan I thought that Jason Robinson was the 1 shining light throughout England's attempt to retain their world crown. There was excitement in the ground and in homes and bars every time the ball got to him. He laid it on the line and emerged battered and bruised but a true sporting hero.

He additionally gets my vote as for years he has delivered hot food and blankets to the homeless in Manchester, when many other top sporting personalities would have been out clubbing.

It is this sort of thing that the personality should be about!

Pedrosa

is that true?

Hovis yes this is 100% true. Jason began doing this when he was a young player at Wigan.(I speak very highly of him despite me being a Saints fan since being a kid!) Being a top star at a very early age he did go off the rails a little. He came under the influence of a Kiwi,(do you remember Inga the Winger?") From then he turned his life around and is an excellent role model for anyone. He is a Yorkshire lad you know?

As to whether any of this has any relevance? Well I think in this day and age to have a more "rounded" personality in the running cannot do any harm. For many though I am sure that none of Jason's attributes beyond the sporting arena have any value at all.

I have no problem with Hamilton getting a look in. Many in past have won but with just one season in the general public eye so I don't see he shouldn't. he didn't win but has won a lot in his route through and its difficult to dismiss the fact that he was as close as you can get without getting it in his first season. He has had the benefit of a good car and team but that does count for a lot in F1.

Others may deserve it more but since its a public vote will probably reflect current hype he stands a good chance. I wouldn't be upset because it has always been that way to some extent.

I don't follow it much - has Paula Radcliffe won it before or just been a runner up?

Although the keyboard playing, national anthem singing WSB champ should be recognised ask people in the street and 90% will say "James who?".

Good choice. Any women who can be at the top of the world in her sport, then go away for 2 years, have a child, then come back, and WIN at another marathon, is damn good going.

Watched her since i was at school when she wasn't so good. HAsn't the lass done well!!!!

JT over Lewis, but its a people vote, and people don't know about JT, where-as Lewis is on nearly every sat-sun so gets the press.

ThEGr33k
03-12-07, 10:20 PM
I think that Top Gear thing was a press stunt for Lewis, i mean how can he have got such a quick time??? Hmmm Im very sceptical!

He was on the morning news this morning too with the sports person kissing his **** some :smt105

SIGH.

Also i seen the advert of all the sports, most of them get twice the time JT does and it shows them doing their sport, comes to JT in his leathers stood next to a standard blade like he used on 5th gear! Not showing an exciting wheelie over the line with some screaming he did it or a burn out or anything that might excite anyone into voting... ARG. Its fixed, i look forward to the actual night i really do!

JT makes big money, rides bikes for a living, is well repected in his field yet can turn the fame off walking down the high street. I doubt he's worried about the 'fix' ;)

Dressage doesn't get much press either, thank **** for that! Equal coverage across the sports would be ****e!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOO

Welsh boxing superstar Joe Calzaghe brought his superb year to a close by winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The 35-year-old finished ahead of Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, while boxer Ricky Hatton was in third place.

Calzaghe, the world super-middleweight champion, is undefeated in 44 fights, including a superb win over Mikkel Kessler in November.

Enzo Calzaghe, Joe's father and trainer, was named Coach of the Year

I am no lover of boxing but the right person won based on merit and guess what, he actually has a personality!

How could anyone who had won nothing win i.e. Lewis. Although I hope he does well next season and comes second to James Toseland, who will win MotoGP 2008 beating Rossi by 1 point (dreaming) ;)

Is this the first time the public voted for the winner?

At least Toseland got to put on a show- ride in on a bike, play some piano. Not really an approach you could apply to the boxers- walk in, punch someone in the face.

Why is it called 'sports personality of the year' and not 'sports person'

Nobody really knows. I mean, Calzaghi has a personality, fair enough. Kelly Holmes and Redgrave, aye. Freddie Flintoff, most definately, I hate cricket and I'm possibly an anti-english racist but Freddie was a deserving winner both on sporting achievements, and personality. Since he's an entertaining ****head.

But ZARA PHILIPS! Good god. She didn't even have enough personality to fill a winner's speech. Amazing! Yah! Did I mention it was amazing! My mummy won it too, isn't that amazing! She also skillfully managed to use the word "privilege" about 10 times last night, which really wasn't a wise choise of word. Jonny Wilkinson doesn't have any sign of a life off-pitch and his entire brain is used up on triangulating kicks, he's actually managed to suck more life from the sport than anyone else I can think of. Beckham, OK, I'll give him a break as he actually seems like a nice guy. But you can't not laugh when you discover Steve Davis won.

For me, performance of the night went to Sir Bobby Robson.

In an age of over inflated egos and vastly over paid footballers, he remains a humble man who was truly moved by all the attention given to him.

Respect.

Erm apart from League Championships in Holland and Portugal, taking a second rate Ipswich team to win the Uefa Cup, taking England to the verge of the 1990 World Cup final and managing some of the best players in the world over the last 60 years?

Not much really.....
