View Full Version : recomend me a camera?
i know there is a lot of photographers on here, so im seeking your advice
although my £30 ebay kodak DX3600 (or as vickster calls it "my first fisher price camera) has up to now been great, it cant take action shots, when out on the trials bikes, i need to press the button 1-2 seconds before the picture i want, which results in a lot of guess work. so..... time for a new one,
instant photo ?(i take it this is the shutter speed)
video camera would be nice
easy to transfer to PC
dont want loads of buttons & features to confuse me
small enough to fit in a fair size pocket
or is anybody selling there older camera, that meets my needs?

Maybe a good condition second hand digital SLR mate? For the action type shots they are the only way to go. Other digi cameras all suffer from varying degrees of shutter lag which messes up any attempt at crisp action shots.HTH.

How much money do you want to spend.
I think your probably looking at a "Bridge Camera" but I think even then the shutter might not fire fast enough to get sports shots, want you really want is a Digital SLR, pretty much instant shutter release.
How much money do you want to spend.. bing from yorkshire, as little as possible:-$ £100 ?

I dont think you'll get anything like you're after new for £100, 2nd hand or Ebay I would think.
Trouble is with a compact camera lilke you have there is a big lag between pressing the button and the camera taking the picture which is why your mate keeps missing you.
What you could try is panning i.e. your mate moves the camera along to track you as you ride then when you reach the pre-arranged position for a stunt or a wheelie he knows what you're going to do and can pre-empt this and fire the camera early.
Its a bit of a faff but with a bit of practice you should be able to get the shots you want, perhaps try that before you splash out on a new camera ?

if your mate has already focussed you, which takes upto half a second depending on conditions, half press to full press takes 0.02 seconds, effectively instant. i've used mine for ages now and haven't got a bad word to say about it
i got mine for £120 off amazon, but they seem to be selling them for £230 now:confused:

Isn't it the auto focus that causes the lag - if you stick it in manual and set it to focus middle distance it should be pretty instant. My cheeapie does this.
If you want a bridge camera my wife did a lot of checking out and decided that the Canon Powershot S5IS was the best one for a decent price, you can get one for not much more than £200. I've used it and it's great.

Cheers Keith
as i intend to take it out with me on the bike, i did not want anything too expensive, or bulky, as im bound to fall off and brake it.
there is no shutter speed adjustment on mine, i think its quite old, but does the job as long as what you want to photograph is not moving

I did two weeks of riding in Cambodia and came back with very average photos so I decided to get a decent camera. I didn't want the expense and complexity of an SLR so I went for a Panasonic Lumix FZ 7. It's got a good Leica lens with the option of auto or manual setting (which is what you want for your dirty photos above). There is a large series of this type of camera and as long as you ignore megapixels which IMO are almost totally irrelevant compared to good optics you should be able to get what you want second hand for £100.
Have a look on this site http://www.dpreview.com/ Although the reviews are useful I found that being able to see a range of photos taken with the camera you're thinking about buying was what swayed me from Canon to Panasonic.

Surely you're not suggesting there could be something suspect about it? I mean just because "View seller's other items" comes up with a selection of car stereos with wires hanging out the back doesn't mean anything at all.
Actually I might just nip upstairs to make sure my camera is where I left it ...
what about the ones that take a series of pictures, then you pick the best?

I'll recommend the Fuji Finepix S5700.
Awsome begginers camera, takes good shots of everything i have tried to date.
Edit, i should have said Tescos are selling these for £130 reduced from £170 in their sale at the moment.
It is so easy to use, below is some photos i took at cadwell the first day i ever used it, complete amature and they came out ok.

To allow you to set shutter speed you need a manual setting with either shutter or aperture priority. Even a "sports setting" will do it. Most cameras will have something like that.
What you really need to avoid a delay between pressing the button and getting your photo is a manual focus setting which is much less common on a point and shoot but will be present on all SLRs and some in betweens (like my shiny FZ7). This lets you set up the photo in advance so its all ready to go when you need it with no thinking by the camera.
The other thing I think is important in a camera is a large objective lens. In essence the more light getting in the more flexibility you're going to have.
Just buy the stolen Panasonic:rendeer:
What your talking about is neither shutter speed or the aperture setting.
Your talking about shutter lag.....which isnt adjustable ever. Most modern cameras are more than quick enough. Check out the table below to give you an idea of what different cameras are capable of.

Some other fun things to do with a half decent camera are
to set a medium shutter speed and pan for action shots
937
use a small aperture so that you get a long depth of field
938
and never (be allowed) to forget binning your bike on holiday in NZ
939
I'll recommend the Fuji Finepix S5700.

All true but an important point is that manufacturers start the clock on their shutter lag measurements after focus lock has been achieved. So if you can manually set the focus (either with a proper manual focus or by pressing the button half way down on some compacts) you'll be ahead of the game. It makes a big difference for me.
Canon Ixuses of various types do it for me, the newer the better generally speaking.
I have an older one, but a friend has a more recent Ixus IS800 which is superb. Surprising what even older ones will do.
[img=http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1175/batresized635wsl7.th.jpg] (http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=batresized635wsl7.jpg)
Small is beautiful if you want to carry it about all the time. Small lenses will never quite match big format SLR though, but you can get very good shots with good compacts.
As the others say, for quick reaction use focus lock then it just takes pretty much instantly. Also there's fast sequencing, often 2 or even 3 frames per sec. The video on newer ones is very good too.
Having said all that, nearly all new generation digicams from well known names are pretty good. Don't worry to much about Mp figures these days, anything 4Mp or more will probably do you, which is about the minimum now anyway. Check out the review sites as recommended, http://www.dpreview.com/ and

The shutter speed doesnt have much relevance to be honest, only shutter lag.
Depending on how much you plan to play about with the camera depends on whether you should be bothered about shutter speed.
The S5700 is adjustable from 4 sec - 1/2000sec
a 4 second shutter speed holds the shutter open for 4 seconds, ideal if you have a tripod and are taking photos in near pitch black, you can use an led torch to light paint the pitch black area and it will come out like daylight without orbs being produced by the flash. It will also create light trails like in the november photo comp thread. And also the running water blurring effect.
http://is.freefoto.com/images_d/BLOG/11_09_2004_c.jpg
The 1/2000sec shutter speed will capture all the everything in very fine detail producing a very crisp picture normally showing every drop of water in a splash pic like below.

i dont want to play about at all,
i want to point the camera at somthing & press the button, so that it instantly takes the photo, as the bikes are only doing about 5-10mph when i take the photos, i dont want a blur or to only catch ½ the bike
:-s
Hovis, I can second the Panasonic FZ7. Has a number of modes including SIMPLE mode where you can just point and shoot. FZ8 is out now which means the 7 should effectively be down in price. The Fuji S5600 or S5700 also get good ratings.

Amazon.com Review
Konica stripped a few features off its ground-breaking KD-400Z (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000069D6D/$%7B0%7D) and dropped the CCD to 3.2 megapixels to create the KD-310Z, but they also shaved a lot of money off the price. This camera loses the audio recording and playback features of its more expensive cousin, but retains the tiny size, 3x optical zoom, zippy reaction times, dual memory slots, and outstanding image quality that set the KD-400Z apart from the pack.
The KD-310Z is very easy to operate, turning on immediately after its protective lens cover is slid aside and providing easy framing with a high-contrast color LCD screen on the back. Menus are navigated using a four-way switch on the back, which also comes in handy when previewing images. The camera takes excellent close-up macro shots and also came very close to the 400Z's image quality in outdoor shots and portraits. Colors are accurately rendered regardless of the subject, but the KD-310Z unfortunately suffers from the same red-eye problem that plagues the KD-400Z. Regardless of the red-eye reduction wizardry that is accessible with the flick of a switch, the flash is positioned so close to the camera's lens that red-eye is practically unavoidable.
The included 16 MB Secure Digital (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/516870/$%7B0%7D) memory card needs to be beefed up to handle the camera's high native resolution, and you'll probably want to invest in another set of rechargeable batteries (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/172436/$%7B0%7D), but other than that there are few complaints. The camera takes great pictures for those who just want to point and shoot without mucking with manual controls all the time, and low-light shots are its only real weakness, since there is no way to adjust the shutter speed. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
Incredibly small, sleek case that also happens to be rugged
Great image quality and color reproduction
Intuitive controls
Cons:
Needs a bigger memory card
Some more manual controls would be nice considering the detail this camera can render
Red-eye is nearly impossible to eliminate

I have owned this little gem for about 6 weeks. Boy do I love it! This is my first digital camera and it has far exceeded my expectations! I took it on a recent golf trip and I was amazed at the results. I bought this camera because of its small size (as of purchase time, Konica claimed it to be the smallest 3+ megapixel camera) and solid construction (stainless steel) but it is so much more than that. I am an amateur photographer for sure, but this camera makes me look like a pro. It is very easy to use and requires virtually no knowledge of photography beyond the ability to aim and shoot. The automatic settings works extremely well, which make it great when you want to pull out the camera quickly and take a photo before a special moment is gone. It's about as idiot proof as a camera could be. Before buying the Konica, I also considered the Canon S330 Elph. Even though the S330 is only 2 megapixels, I really struggled with my decision because I really liked the idea of going with a proven camera manufacturer like Canon. In the end though, I decided to take a chance on the Konica because I could get 3 megapixels in the same size package at about the same price as the Canon. Additionally, this Konica accepts both Smart Media AND Sony Memory Stick cards, which it great because I own a Sony digital camcorder and I can use the same cards. I'm sure Canon's cameras are very good, but you pay a price for that brand name. You won't be disappointed if you choose to go with this slick little Konica...
Here's my summary of pros and cons:
Pros:
3 Megapixels
Compact size
Great photo quality
Rugged construction (stainless steel) Slide-open lens protector
Very easy to use
Accepts Smart Media AND Sony Memory Stick cards
Decent battery life Cons:
No video-out port
Cannot charge battery in-camera
i read that............ it needs translating

Ah, no, that'd be Hovis you're thinking of there.
Cheers guys,
On the basis of this thread I've bought a Fuji Finepix S5700 for me and a SONYCyber-shot DSC-W35 for Mrs Jabba. Pixmania delivered Christmas yesterday, just a few days after ordering
Good camera and package prices at Pixmania, but beware of the auto-addons in the checkout (VIP Card (for £7) and "Zenexperience" (whatever that is!) were added to the shopping cart.
Note, too, the the Finepix was sourced from France and came with a French manual, English ones available for download. The Sony came with User-guides in about four langauges (English inc).
Can't complain about the French manual at those prices, though, and the camera is multi-language anyway :)
