Bought myself a Cb500 Honda as a trackday bike. Ex training bike from the place I do the training, so i know it's history. (It was also my Brothers bike from new). It's a 96 model with the drum brake, so have also bought a smashed 98 model with a rear disc & Brembo calipers. Been messing about today stripping un needed parts off it & fitting the Fuel race can off the SV to it (Have another can on the SV with BS marks, but just as loud with the baffle in :)).
My aim is to do a few track days over the winter, and, if I'm fast enough, I might enter the CB500 Cup next year. This must be the cheapest form of racing on the planet with the only things you can change are the fork oil & rear sprocket & can only run Bridgestone Bt090 Tyres. Total cost for my 2 bikes at the mo......... £620 :D

Those CB500s go bloody well. There's always a couple of them screaming round in fast group on No Limits trackdays with instructors aboard, and they don't get left behind either.

Hope to bump into you on a trackday somewhere, I'll be the one on the ginger CBR600FW

Had to sell my car to fund this, but, you gotta have some fun in your life dont you? I love not having a better half telling me what i can & cant do :):).
I am hoping to do Oulton Park this Saturday. My son is going in the Inters on his CBR & I am going to be a wuss & go in the novices, havent done a trackday for years, so keep my fingers crossed I can put some bigger bikes to shame in the twisty bits :) Then get my ass kicked on the straights.

Quick video of the can, I think it sounds quite nice :)

Cheers for that. I have just bought a catch tray from Dave. I pick up my crashed bike tomorrow, have ordered my tyres, so fingers crossed it will be in 1 piece for Oulton this weekend. What are BT090's like in the wet? because they have forecast rain for Saturday :( I will post some pics up when it's done, but it wont look much different to the ones above.

With CB's if it is absolutely peeing it down and you know that it won't stop raining then full wets are required , if there is light drizzle and you get odd dry patches then you can use BT090's BUT don't push the front to hard or you'll be on your **** before you can blink.

Cheers for that. It looks like I will be taking it easy because I haven't ordered my wets yet :(
I could always leave my Cheng Shin "super tyres" on I suppose :smt103

Wow! Thats really cool. How much did you say you paid for the bike? I'd like a cheapo CB500, do most schools flog them cheap? Be a great winterbike / track-hack :D I remember a few years ago (maybe 10?) that a guy from the superbike magazine competed in the CB500 cup; from what he wrote, it was a right laugh! Even when a then-very-young Leon Haslam came along and beat them all at donington

It was up in the shop at £995, but he had another in the back that I was supposed to buy, but his son decided he wanted it, so got the 1st one for £500.... Bargain :)
I have just picked up the smashed one from Standish, this has cost me £120 and ended up with a major result.
It has stainless downpipes & I also got a rear caliper off a 2002 machine (after a bit of bartering). I will post a pic up shortly once I have give myself a hernia getting it out of the van :D

It's surprising just how much weight you can junk from a standard road bike and still keep it running. So far my CBR has lost about 23 pounds and the road wiring loom is still in, and so is the headlight. The Akrapovic exhaust that's fitted weighs in at 11 pounds lighter than standard, so my bike is so far about 35 pounds lighter, with more to go.

Next step is race bodywork, that'll save another 7 or 8 pounds.

I'm gagging to get a daytime MOT on it too, just to see how many times I get pulled for having no lights whatsoever.

Couple of updated pics.

Brembo front caliper fitted.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/croozenooze/cb500/DSC00092.jpg

My new paddock stands (early Christmas pressie off the kids :)). I have tidied up all of the wiring that used to sit in the headlight bezel, this now lives under the fuel tank and also cut off the rear footpegs.

Bridgestone Bt090 Tyres fitted.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y177/croozenooze/cb500/DSC00098.jpg

All that needs to be done now is remove the OE stands & she is ready for the track.I have hit a major problem with the rear wheel, no one seems to have any 2nd hand rear brake discs, so I am going to run with the drum brake for a couple of track days until I can afford a new disc (£95 + vat :smt103) and the footrest hanger & brake lever are different on the later models, so need to find one of them. Never mind it will come good sooner or later.

I was looking for a 400, but thought the 500 might be a little bit more fun (plus it's a twin). I've ridden my son's CBR600 & I keep looking for 7th & 8th gear, so a high revving 400 was'nt for me. Looking at the weather forecast for tomorrow, I'm not so sure :(

Bike looks good ' it's getting there.:D

You may want to change:;)

Front brake hose for a braided one ( keep the original rear one on though )
Front brake fluid for dot 5.1 higher boiling point.
Front fork oil , 10w with i think a 192mm air gap ( speak to Dave)
Remove center stand , other wise you'll grind it out or worse it'll dig in and flip you off.
Remove original fuel filter located in tank on fuel tap because they are prone to getting blocked, fit an in line one on.

Tyre pressures , i use 30 Front 32 Rear , but it's up to you on how you feel on the bike.

Have fun:)

Cheers Coggers.
Stand has gone :) I will sort out the other bits & bobs after tomorrow. If it's wet it will hopefully give me some feedback into how it feels, plus it should show any problems.

Done my track day & it has pulled a couple of little problems. The clutch is slipping in 5th & 6th, so am going to dump the oil & use some better quality stuff.
1st session was a bit scary, went out with std pressures in new tyres, so scared me to death, lowered them a little & felt a bit better. I will try upping them on the next one to see if that makes a difference.
Other than that it was a good day.

Glad to hear you had good time.;)
Just a quick warning when you go to change clutch, be very carefull with pressure plate spring bolts , they are made of cheese and don't overtighten them other wise you'll be forking out ££££ for a new clutch basket.:D

Oh and get a complete kit which includes springs etc.
I'am running heavy duty EBC clutch kit in mine and haven't had a fault yet.

Good luck

Got the luxury of this, so any engine gremlins & I should be ok. By the sound of it, this wreck is going to be worth the £120 I paid for it :)

Coo, that's taken a fair old clout. Still, there looks to be a fair amount of useable stuff left on it. Well worth 120 sheets to the right person, i.e. you.

I dunno Mr C, you might have a few handling issues with that CB500

Made me laugh when the guy said that he had to remove the frame number so I couldn't put it back on the road
It would cost less to buy a new bike

Here she is virtually finished. Just waiting for my front Goodridge hose and hanlebar grips to arrive then thats it.
Doing another trackday @ Oulton onSaturday, so can't wait to try her out.
Also picked a pair of wet tyres off ebay for £60, so I won't even moan if its raining :)

Rear disc conversion was a nightmare. When I bought the crashed one I didn't realise that the rear wheel spacer was missing, so ended up making one. The swinging arm was different, but had one & with the footrest hanger i had to re engineer it because 2nd hand, they are as rare as hens teeth and new they cost about £150
I am quite chuffed with the colour scheme which I did in my front room last night (overspray might be a problem to get off everything;)). It is the same colour scheme as the company I work for, so if I go racing, i might just mention it to the M.D. (sponsorship )

I don't have a garage, so I can only do it when the weather is ok. It's taken on & off about 4 weeks, but if I had a garage I reckon it could have been done in a few days.
I haven't worked out the total cost yet, but I think I would have change out of £1000, which, yes it could work out to be cheap fun. :)
