....was there something satisfying about seeing Ewan McGregor's wife keep falling off on the final epsiode of the Long way Down (having done it numerous times myself and still doing it!) or do I just have a sadistic streak?! :D

Dissapointed with this series.

Thought see had a face like thunder most of the time.

Felt sorry for Charley.

Yeah..... I think she should have kept out of it !

Also not meaning to take anything away from Ewan & Charlie I think the back up was a bit OTT !

Aw, leave her be.

Was a big step (and hard work) for a noob to take and she saw it through to the finish. I can't blame her for wanting to go along and something tells me any one of us would do it in her situation.

A new biker is born.

Yeah I knew she wouldn't be able to hack the sand. I thought it was cruel on Charlie, and I thought she made the whole trip worse, she should of had the decency to butt out and leave the two friends to it. A new biker is born? I seriously doubt it, lets see in 2 months time if she is still riding.

Ta.... not a huge fan of this one - maybe it's too much time following the back up team or the fact no one seems to be enjoying themselves that much? Or the rally style timetable thing - the last one just seemed much more casual...

Still beats Eastenders though

They don't look arsed; rather than enjoy it they just seem obsessed with making time/milepoints. They got criticised for the long way down for not having an accurate portrayal of the support they recieved which they've obviously corrected. Those BMWs just seem to get bigger!

Me too really, didnt see the others except the Charlie Boorman dakar thing which I quite enjoyed, felt a bit sorry for Charlie though first they visit Ewans family in Scotland, then his wife turns up in Malawai then his mum turns up as well and Im thinking what about Charlie ? and I thought it ended a bit too quick, I didnt even realise this was the last one, how many countries did they cover in an hour ? still gotta be better than other crap on the telly I guess

As with the rest of you all....dissapointing series and Mrs mcgregor should deffor have stayed out of it.

Ping, tho i see where you are comming from that it was brave for a noobie n all that, it was.
But she just shouldnt have been on this trip is all.

I'm sure Euwan has enough cash to fund a journey for themselves minus the cameras and crew if she really wants to learn and experience the adventure of crossing contintents on a bike.

Why did she have to come on this, slow them down with all her dropping and make poor old Charley feel so left out and alone?
Selfish biatch if you ask me.

And one of the very few women with a french accent that wasnt sexy in any way.

I enjoyed it, credit to Mrs M for getting back on the horse after a fair few drops, she took it all in her stride and learned to laugh out loud about it, rather than get upset.

They had a tough job taking in all around them and making deadlines, finding fuel etc, so a I suppose making it look good for TV would be difficult. It's all very well us as bikers wanting to see the scenery and all around from inside a helmet, but the average bod sitting in front of his 42" plasma wouldn't be bothered, he wants to see them off bike and looking at other stuff. You have to play to the majority of the audience.

Has to be said, it's given the man in the street a new outlook on those nasty smelly hooligans on bikes who teararse past them in traffic queues.

Btw, Charley did a few good wheelies last episode too.

I thought this last episode was a bit of a loose-end rather than a climax. Not a great deal happened, it was more like a touring holiday than any great adventure or journey, and it was just a bit dull.

Yeh thats how i felt too.

Normaly seeing a load of bikes followign a leader who had done such a m,eag trip would be fun to watch....but that bit even seemed set up or not as spontaneous as it may actualy have been.

Nuff respect to them for riding those tanks in sand. I spent 6 weeks riding round Argentina this year on a Transalp with my girlfriend. The toughest day by far was riding a sand road into a wetland reserve. I think that their Panzers weigh about the same as the Transalp with two of us on board and I found just one day was bloody hard.
Still no respect for actually choosing the big beemers when they could have had any bike they wanted. Bonkers.

Hell no. Read a few posts on horizonsunlimited the overland bikers forum. BMWs are way too big and are not as reliable as they would like you to believe. In Long Way Round they broke down repeatedly and in Long Way Down 2 bikes destroyed their shocks (as in oil leaking down the road with a total loss of damping) within 7000 miles. If I'd paid ten grand I'd have been unhappy.
A friend of mine had his R80GS gearbox eat itself in Siberia. It's a common problem on them and a nightmare to fix.
I'd go much smaller and japanese.

The adventure forums are amusing; they're always going wrong, have ****ty dealer backup and are bloody expensive to do anything on!

Fizzy Fish
04-12-07, 09:15 AM
i wouldn't choose a BMW for similar reasons - weight, unreliability and the fact that the extra cost could fund several more months of a trip! besides which i kinda like more of scruffy beast, and the beemers are too refined looking - you'd worry about dropping the thing and scraping all the expensive bits

that said those converted Ducatis do look lurvely though!

I completely disagree!

Having only done a Coastal Tour of Britain this year, it was brilliant as I could relate to how they would be feeling for nearly all of it - including riding through a stream/river that comes up to your feet!!!

And although most of you say they had a lot of back-up, on our tour we found it hard enough to find a bike shop ANYWHERE in very North Scotland, so I dread to think how hard it would be to get parts in Africa of all places.

Ah but isnt that part of the adventure? The risk factor i mean?

And i personaly found it dissapointing in comparison to the earlier Long Way Round trip.

I was disappointed too. I think they could have made the series twice as long and shown a lot more of the countries they passed through and the people they met.

I got bored with endless shots of dusty roads, although Charlie's wheelies were always entertaining:D

Watched the last one last night - Respect to Eva - apart from coming across a bit miserable she seemed quite enthusiastic about her bike. Given the rest of the series I don't think her turning up detracted from it. (not sure that's a compliment)

Thought the other one was much better (watched that the other week).

I agree. I spent two weeks with a mate going round Cambodia last year on XR 250s. Landmines, washed out bridges, useless maps and knowing just 5 words of Khmer. It was fantastic.

yeah i was thinking that as well. what's the betting that in the next show it's just her & ewan?? but that wouldn't be the same IMO - it should be about the 2 guys heading off in search of adventure, male bonding, fart lighting, etc...

mind you two chicks, now i think that would work as well. hey maybe that's the answer to my trip-funding problem?! we could fall out in the middle of a muddy swamp and have to sort out our differences via mud-wrestling - bound to help with the ratings... ;)

I love the fact that Eve wants to ride, but disagree with her participating on the Long Way Down run. It was very unfair on Charlie, and it screwed the whole '2 blokes on their bikes' thing. What next? Mrs Clarkson sharing track runs with The Stig??

I must admit, I did find it slightly amusing that they montaged all the footage of Eve falling-off and showed it one after the other... I noticed that Ewan wasn't riding for himself, he was babysitting Eve. Completely understandable, but not an ideal place for a first rideout IMHO.

I noticed that to. I used to do that with Liz and one day she told me it was better if I just did my own thing and left her to it and she was right that works much better.

Did you notice to how later on they had her in between Ewan and Charlie and not in front so she could follow the lines of the bike in front which on that kind of road I would have thought made her life much easier.
