1.) If you jump out of a plane onto a big enough trampoline, will you bounce to a stop without injuring yourself ?

Quite an interesting question posed by one of my esteemed colleagues. After a discussion it grew into

2.) If you jump out of a plane onto a massive slide, how long would it take for the slides reducing gradient to completely bring you to a halt safely and comfortably.. (imagine 2 mile long deathslide or something..)

Any questions you need answering ??

Once we have enough, maybe we can send them off to the New Scientist magazine or something..

How long is a piece of string?

no really everyone says it... but how long is it?

Sounds like one for Baph...

why are we here and how big is the universe!

when to use "to" and when to use "too" ;-)

Provided it was big enough/high enough that it didn't "bottom out" and that when you fell from the bounce you landed again on the trampoline (etc, etc.) until coming to a stop, yes, I reckon it'd work fine. Of course you'd still have to land properly on it. It's quite possible to break your neck on a normal trampoline if you don't know what you're doing.

Of course...I'd forgotten! ;)

Depends ... if you're wearing a big red suit and riding a sleigh, then the latter is more appropriate ;-)

But...would the rubbery/canvassy/bouncy sheet/tarpaulin bit be 'soft' enough to give when you're travelling at terminal velocity? Wouldn't almost any object become like rock when you impact at those speeds?

It would have to deform very very quickly in order not to injure you.

Would it help if you held a cat in front of you when you hit? They usually manage pretty well.

Exactly 2 times from the middle to the end! :D

When creating a Möbius Strip from a two sided piece of paper where does the second side go?

More worrying, when breaking a Möbius Strip returning it from the one sided shape to a two sided shape where did that new side come from??

For more information on the Möbius Strip consult your local interweb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%B6bius_strip)

if the trampoline is imaginary and huge, which magically can keep itself tense and flat, even though the middle would sag in reality and yet be elastic and have clearance, and you hit it at terminal velocity, it should be fine. You're not going to bounce forever, then you start breaking the 2 law of thermodynamics which you really cant do.
The slide would also totally work.
The slide one might actually work in reality though. There is no way that you could build a trampoline like this that would actually work in reality with currently available materials.

What I want to know is, if you have some serious machine / Gatling type guns strapped onto you, and you point them down, can you start firing when you fall, can you slow yourself down to a safe speed to hit the deck. The recoil off some of those big guns is pretty impressive.

Also... Möbius strip == reminds me of Topology mathematics at Uni == head broken == !compute.

I don't think that's fair. You'd scare the willies out of my cat:smt070

If the universe is expanding, is it possibale that its has expand and collaspe and then exploded (big bang) more than once and how mnay times has it happened and what would the differnce between each cycle? Or have I sat here many times and wrote this exact thing?

How possibale is light travel? Is possibale to build to an energy source that produces an infinite of energy to over come, the issue of mass increasing as the speed of light is reached?
