Well I've finally created a CG Earth that I'm pretty much happy with. Created in 3DS Max 9 using mental ray as the rederer. Got the textures from the NASA website including a 3000 pixel wide cloud map which was 34mb in size. This is all going towards an nice little animation I am doing about asteroids. The pic with the city lights is not meant to be realistically accurate, it;s more of a CG arty render as you would not see city lights from space (although I'll take the experts word for that)!
So far it's probably taken about 12-15 hours to create just for the Earth.

That looks pretty damn good to me!
WOW, I've just found my New Desktop background.
Excellant work.
Really nice Dan. You're quite good with Max. I've given it a try but found all those tools intimidating. I usually get by using Strata3D pro and Wings3D for most of my needs but respect goes to you mate. Do you know of anyone who tried modelling the curvy SV by any chance? I've been meaning to do it myself but never managed to find the time. It would be nice to play around on a CG model before going with spanners to change stuff on the actual thing eh?
