iPod nano or the equiavalent Sony Walkman? I am cautious about the iTunes thing. Ive tried a Zen device before and was lukewarm about it. It just wasnt as 'nice' as some others. Does the Walkman have the same functionality but with normal file transfer etc?
Dont know mcuh about these things, but I like the look and feel of those two. Let's face it hard to dislike the feel of the iPod.
I have a zen stone and I think it's great. So cheap and easy to use. I don't see the point in spending double the amount to get an iPod nano which does the same job.

I've got the new Ipod Nano 8Gb. Absolutely love it! It's full of features they don't advertise about that make it pleasant to deal with. Accidently pull the headphones out? It'll pause it for you automtically. Put spoken audio on? It recognises and remembers where you last stopped listening.
I was an avid anti-ipod person and had the sonys in the past; but they were a ballache to use in real life. Itunes is an excellent program and having an Ipod means you can use the full functionality of it. Like having Podcasts (all hail the lovely podcasts;))

You don't have to use an iPod with iTunes
Mine is stuffed to the brim with .mp3 format tracks - I've never been anywhere near iTunes - why would you go there ?

Had one. Interested in something more 'flashy' more 'nice' more intangible 'whatsit' oh and a bit of video and photos and stuff*
*as yet undecided stuff

I'm not going to argue the merits of one player over another, but an often overlooked advantage of the ipod is the sheer number of third party accessories for it. Many car stereos have ipod connectors and allow you to control the ipod from the stereo, even displaying the track information. Then there's the selection of cases, speakers, alarm clocks, radio receivers etc. with ipod docks.
iTunes is pretty good too and the user interface on the new ipods looks lovely.

If you dont like I tunes, then stay away from Sonic Stage (Sonys offering) It utter utter ****e!
Check out I-River. Verna has an old 256mb unit, and the sound quality is far better than my nano.

This is the reason I shall be going down the Apple route ... as much as I hate to admit it ... they seem to have cornered the market on the accessory front, and that in turn has made it THE mp3 player to have.
iTunes is pretty good too and the user interface on the new ipods looks lovely.
Not too sure about iTunes ... other half uses it, and so do I ... it's cumbersome at times (how on earth do you go "back" in the iTunes store?? I have to click "Store ... Previous page" - I don't want it hidden in some friggin menu - put it on the screen where I can see it!)
The user interface on the iPods in general has always impressed me though to be fair.
I too have a Nano one of the original ones with only 2Gb (embarassingly not quite full), it has been dropped, wet, sweaty etc and it carries on going. The controls are relatively intuitive and easy to use on the move, which is important to me.
It's super light too, so you barely notice you have it. Great.
Accessories and itunes are both excellent too.
Just buy some decent headphones though - I use some Sennheiser CX300's for normal and Sennheiser PMX 70's for running, both great sound blocking and good strong sound.

I don't usually use the iTunes store, but I was looking through it the other night and just used the 'back' button to go back. Can't understand why you're having problems. The forward and back buttons are the small buttons in the top left of the store window (underneath the volume control). They're greyed out in this pic:

They're always there i think. Just sometimes I think you look for PC style buttons out of habit.

Na, went all MP3 once my incar player packed up and really couldnt find a new one that i liked. So bought a CD player for the car that run MP3 Discs and one that has a line in so i can connect my pod from its headphone socket.
Anyhoo, I-River. The sound quality is far better than my nano. The one she has uses its own software, but im sure that the new ones are drag n drop. I think th i-river click is thier nano/video competitor. When my nano goes tits up, and im sure it will, i'll be looking at the i-river.

CheersI use a PC, and i have those buttons. I only use I-tunes for the last resort to find a track. I use it to find track names mainly for vernas cd's that are 99% sound tracks!!

Volume on the nano is more than adequate with better earphones.

On the new one it's rubbish. Far worse than the older ones. I can't hear it in the gym for example. Meddling EU volume cap...

The new Stone is pretty nice. So is the latest iriver one, though I can't remember the name. I can't get on with Ipods myself, not when my Creative works just as well as the equivalent ipod and cost less than 2/3 as much, with better battery life.

Got a Sony NW-A808 last summer and have been very pleased with it. 8GB is plenty for my CD collection and the battery life is pretty good (20-30 hours). It also plays video and shows slides if that rocks your boat.
On the downside it will only charge from a USB socket with a PC CONNECTED (i.e. no commercially available USB charger or hub works, only direct to a PC or a hub which has PC connected to it, unplug the PC from the same hub and the device stops charging... go figure) or the Sony charger available separately (£19 or thereabouts).
Sonicstage (although I never had any trouble with it) is no longer an issue as the latest version the NWZ range is (allegedly) fully compatible with Windows Media Player.

:laughat: me!
Probably explains why I hadn't seen them
I checked last night and ... lo' n behold ... they are exactly where everybody said they would be ... how much of a t1t do I feel now?!? about as much as Peter Andre ;-)
Thanks :D

How deaf do you want to be? There is a sound limiter on the nano that you can turn off.

Yeah, you can cap it even further. But there's a EU volume cap which makes it far too quiet :( In the gym I can't hear any spoken word tracks which is just rubbish. I know there'll be a hack sometime soon though.

Is it the 'peoples' player then? :p
It must be - even I've got one and can use it without resorting to profanity and a hammer!
And has been said - the range of doo-dads for it is awesome. Well, at least it was the only one I could get a shiney metal protective case with some kind of wibbly rubberish shock aborbing lining for... yeah, mine takes a bit of a kicking as clumso here is forever dropping it.
