A fuel stainless steel oval can. I'm very excited!! Should be arriving on Saturday. Pics to follow...

Quick question- I posted this in the hardware section but either no-one's really looked at it, or no-one can be 'arrissed to answer!! :smt110

Is it necessary to put any kind of seal on the pipe before slipping the new link pipe on? If so, what's the best stuff to use?

After that, I'll be planning braided hoses and new fork springs in the new year. Yippee! It'll feel like a brand new bike!

i didnt need to seal mine, just made sure that the clip was tightened up enough

keeps it in place fine i dont even have a hanger to support it (tho it is a carbon stubby)

I dont have the same can, but i didnt bother, it was a fairly tight fit anyway.

Congrats - have got the same can as you...

I wouldnt bother using sealant to be honest. I tried a couple of things - one was gun gum sort of stuff, cant remember the other...When I used it, put a little too much on, and the heat and pressure of the clamp expanded it out onto the outer of the link pipe - took a lot of autsol to get it off....

Cleaned it up, and put it back with nothing, and I cant say I've noticed a difference...Besides - if you ever need to take the Fuel can off for the MOT etc, it will be a lot harder if you use a sealant...

HTH,

Billy.

The fuel cans are road legal anyway

2 options, first one, put the baffle in (bit silly IMO), other option, find a proper MOT station

Cheers all- PMed back Garry!

As far as MOT is concerned- the place I use (according to my Bro- he has a CBR400 with a full race system that doesn't say "not for road use")- they passed it and said that they consider Harleys with slash pipes loud. So there it is, I guess- stick with them,

I'm rather excited- except for all that sawing....! :D

Incidentally- so far cannot fault Fuel's customer service- have been very prompt and friendly all the way through my Sat delivery enquiry through to my card not going through 'cos clubfingers 'ere put the wrong expiry date in! Very recommended.

Just ordered one myself, looked the best for the price after all my searching around. Deffo need a new can after hearing Pedro's Micron vs my piddly stock item.

Not looking forward to taking a hacksaw to my bike either so giz a shout if you run into any problems fitting yours so i know what to avoid :D

Don't bother with a hacksaw you'll be there for weeks, pull the exhaust off and get a grinder to it.

thedonal
13-12-07, 07:21 PM
Would love to do that- but I don't have a grinder, innit.

Oh well- a little elbow grease is good for the soul...

You can probably get one for a tenner

It's worth it for the amount of time you'll spend with a hacksaw!

Same here, my toolkit runs to a Woolworths junior hacksaw and i'll be lucky if i can find that given the piles of crap in the shed.

Hacksaw isnt so bad - took me about 20-30 mins, and 3 blades to do the job - just dont unbolt the hanger first - otherwise the exhaust can fall just as you are doing the end bit....also, try taping over the area which you want to cut to stop the saw from moving about till it gets into the groove....

Having said all that, if I was doing it again, I'd get a grinder...

P.S. its the law to start her up without any exhaust at all:cool:

Yeah- plus I'd have to get a huge extension lead to get the grinder near my bike (live in a 1st floor flat)- I've alreaddy shellled out an extra £20 on saturday delivery- I don't want to get that pricey on it. Plus I had to shell out on a new battery today. Oh well, as Peter Green said.

Tape- good plan. I've got plenty of masking tape, so no bother there and makes it easy to mark the cutting point.

I'm hoping to get a few movies on the camera- old can, no can and new can, with a bit of me grafting in between. Could make a little movie and EEverything!

Cheers Billy- I'm rather excited. Though I'll have to be patient when It's delivered, as I have to go and get the saw! I think I'll go with some light exhaust seal as well- so of to Halfords and B&Q for me first....

I'll post a pic when it's done...

You know, Matt, it's about getting to time where we should hook up for a ride and natter about guitars and all things ROCK, I reckin.

Then, I can show off my can and battle scars, you can show off your can and bellypan and we can have some fun giggling at your topbox!!! :D :D

You will laugh, then when I show you what the contents are you shall fall into silence and feel like you need one too

I'm not sure when I'll be free to meet up, but most likley in january :D I'm not going anywhere I dont need to at the moment, but after my exams have finished I'll be around. I can meet you in surbiton, then we can poodle up to the Ace :D I dont live around surbiton anymore, im up in enfeild but still commute to the uni  Well, not at the moment, semester finished

So- is opening the topbox a bit like that suitcase in Pulp Fiction? You see a strange glow from the box, a look of wonder on our faces and still, no one knows what's in there!

Enfield? That's a bit of a commute!

January sounds good, as does the Ace- be good to go there. Especially if they're filming 5th Gear- we could give Vicky Butler-Henderson a dry slap and tell her not to be such an idiot in front of the camera (or anywhere else for that matter!).

Maybe wait until I have my new springs and hoses on too (hosiery- OO-Er!), so I can REEALLY show off my bike- and maybe a new fairing too. Even though the scars give it character!

Another quick question for you folks who know- the instructions say 50mm for the cut- a few people have said leave more pipe on than you think you need- should I give it an extra 10mm for this, or will it cause trouble with the fitting?

yorkie_chris
15-12-07, 11:17 AM
50's fine, theres quite a bit of leeway in fitting linkpipes anyway

I used a junior hacksaw to do mine and it was easier than I thought it would be. Just make sure you have a metal cutting blade, I started with the blade the hacksaw came with and it wasn't getting anywhere, then switched it to a metal cutting blade and was easy!

Cheers all- just about ready to go. Given the bike a quick clean- couldn't fit a new exhaust on a filthy bike, now, could I?

:D

Don't forget its really important to start the bike up before you fit the can onto the cut pipe. :p

is it done yet?

thedonal
15-12-07, 08:29 PM
Hey all. Yep it's all on and working (remarkable, considering I did it...!)

All I can say is

Oh
My
God!

It's rather loud without that baffle, isn't it. Had me grinning from ear to ear as I went up through the revs. I wouldn't say she feels faster now, but it's definitely a lot smoother all the way up the rev range and there's no tail off after 600rpm. Did I mention that she's rather loud?!

Started the bike without a can- but didn't leave it on for long- figured the neighbours will get plenty upset with me from now on as it is!!! What a difference it is though.

Sawing the old can off only took about 25 mins of graft- I think the bundled mint cake helped that along! Was a bit fiddly lining it up so it'd fit to the hanger and it took an abortive attempt with the hanger to realise that both sides of the bracket go on one side of the hanger, but got there in the end. Just have to clean off some of the heat seal and polish her up and all will be well.

It was absolutely bloody freezing out there this evening though! Ooh my gods it was ****ing cold! Glad to be home in the relative warm of my flat.

Thanks all for your help and advice with this and much respect to Fuel, who provide great customer service and lovely exhausts!!!

Pics and movies will follow. :D

Im jelous, I want to fit mine! For me, christmas day will be lovely. For the people of east sussex, not so great as I'll be tearing about :D

Yea, it is a bit of a journy from enfield to kingston, but it only really takes an hour so its not that bad. I dont loose much study time commuting because in previous years when it was just me and maria, i would loose the same amount of time through shopping, cooking, cleaning.

Anyway, pics would be great :D :D

I'm jelous

But soon, I'll have just the same

Will I need to do anything else to the bike?

Maybe you should write to them all first and warn them!!!!

Looking at your signatures, I don't think you'll need to do anything else to your bike after the new can!!!! Maybe remove that huge thing sitting on the back of it- got to add a few BHP!!!

Though in terms of the exhaust- probbly not. I'm not sure the fuelling on mine is quite as good now- seems a bit more jerky when I add or remove throttle, though it's not major and I quite like it- it just feels a bit sharper in adding or removing power.

So are you gonna bring it to the Ace tomorrow so we can all marvel at your handiwork?:D

thedonal
15-12-07, 09:39 PM
Well- judging by all my shrivelled bits when I got in tonight, I think I will be mostly wrapped in 2 duvets tomorrow and trying not to shiver too much.

Perhaps if it were warmer.

Plus my flat's like a bombsite after my Xmas came early efforts today- I've managed to stow most of the tools away now but I'm gonna have to ground myself until I tidy my room....!

Have a great day though.
