So, with so many doom-sayers telling us we'll be extinct in X years unless we eat less penguins etc, it strikes me that the human race doesn't have long for this world, and i was wondering what the org thought would be the cause of our demise...

I propose a simple poll, and upon armageddon i shall award the winners with a pint and a packet of crisps, between them...

I propose a war between North Korea and the USA being the end of us all.

Or,

The Blackberry network crashes, and no-one can get any work done who has one, so everything stops while they all get confused and since there are no supplies going to anywhere, we all die

sorry, it takes time to post a 10-option poll, you can now vote:D

this is meant to be a bit of fun, but it would be interesting to see what people think is likely to be the biggest threat to mankind in the next century or so...;)

Nah, Americans aren't that stupid. They're no more or less thick than the rest of the world. The difference admittedly being they're the only country who actually elects the thickos; or employs election counters who can't actually count, whatever.

Despite what was said at the time, Iraq wasn't invaded because they had weapons of mass destruction, Iraq was invaded because they didn't have any. Never pick a fight with a country that can fight back. They learnt that lesson from the British Empire, where it was standard practice to never pick a fight with a country whose inhabitants were armed with anything more deadly than particularly sharp bits of mango. If Saddam actually did have nukes, even itty bitty short range one that could just take out Israel, there'd have been no war. It's why they won't take out North Korea, or Iran for that matter, or China. The best piece of advice for any tin pot dictator is to actually get hold of decent weapons of mass destruction as fast as you possibly can.

The end of oil will be the biggy, if we haven't sorted out a replacement, cold fusion or whatever, in time. Admittedly America may well play a part in the wars over remaining fields, but by that time they may not be the dominant power any more - China could well have overtaken.

The end truly is nigh. Possibly our generation, more likely our kids or grandkids, but at this rate oil is going to either run out, or be priced so high as to effectively be out for 99% of the world. War will follow, as will civil strife on a scale the world has never yet seen. Billions will die.

But I don't think it'll mean the end of humanity, just more of a rebirth, there'll be enough Mad Max survivors out there so that after 10 or so thousand years we'll be back up there trying to figure out what's going to cause the end of the world this time. SV650.org will probably have a poll :D

However you look at it mankind will be its own downfall and not so much how but when.

All the America bashing is really rather tedious.

The end of the world will be caused by a collision with a giant asteroid. Or Earth will be thrown off course and we'll all freeze or vapourise.

Whatever, the Jehovah's Witnesses will give us the date.

Being one of the generation who have enjoyed 60years of relative peace I look at my grandkids and despair at what the future holds for them. Mankind has been very ingenius in this period and I hope that this progress can continue thereby solving some of the forthcoming problems without any of the super powers flexing their muscles and blowing a lot of innocent people to kingdom come

I reckon it could have already started, the middle east is becoming even more destabilised, a new world war will emerge when some of the middle eastern states line up against each to settle old scores and grab control of the oil, the U.S. will jump in to protect its oil assets and and the russians and the chinese will sit back and watch to see the likely outcome and posibly join whoever is strongest against america, the chinese are the nation we have to be most concerened about these days. Imho that is.

Isaiah 17 - Total war - Syria/Jordan/Lebanon/Palestinians versus Israel, probably involving nuclear weapons, VX gas, sarin armed rockets leaving near total devastation.

Ezekiel 38 - Enraged, and spying their chance, mainly Muslim coalition invade Israel to put an end to Israel forever. Invasion is halted by God.

Enter a charismatic antichrist with a well received peace plan to universal acclaim, a 7 year peace treaty - broken halfway through - start of global persecution of remaining Christians and Jews.

At the end of the 7 years, all the nations rise up and meet for final battle with God at Armageddon. No contest, Satan chained and Jesus rules for 1000 years.

End of 1000 years, Satan released, one final battle. Satan loses again.

The End/Beginning

Or something very much like that.

According to some clan out in America, armageddon will be tomorrow, 15 December 2007.

Not sure how it all ends though.

The Messiah did get it wrong the first time though. He initially predicted 31 October 2007.

Ah religeon.Dont you just love it.
As for the question I think overpopulation will cause famine and massive environmental damage. This will lead to wars of scarcity, resulting in more environmental damage and more famine.
So a combination of several factors will be our downfall.I think it might be sooner than we tend to expect as well, given the exponential rate of "progress"

Personally, although I believe that some form of "Armageddon" will happen ... I don't believe that it will be so catastrophic as to spell the end of man's existence. I just think that there will be "a few (hundred or thousand)" survivors who will be able to happily sustain themselves on what is then left of the worlds resources ... and so the cycle begins again ;-) (and I'm not talking motorCYCLE or biCYCLE here!)

Asimo will evolve and rise up as God of The Machines and take revenge on humanity for all those years of servitude at Honda HQ!!

Que sera, sera and no matter who gets slagged off in the meantime or what contingencies who think might helped. When it's over,it's over. No point in losing sleep over it I reckon. I just hope that it is not in the lifetime of my own son.

Year 5 billion, the world burns up as our sun collapses and gives off enough radiation to char the planet. So now you know, are you ready to relocate?

This all makes very depressing reading, especially as we have a beautiful 2yr old son who I would give my life to protect. Echoing anothers' sentiment raised; I hope it's not in my sons' lifetime either.

Man-flu will evolve and women will be able to catch it. As man-flu is 3,000 times more deadly than ordinary girl-flu, all the women in the world will die immediately on contact with the strain and the remaining male-only human race population will have to make their own tea, iron their own clothes, go shopping etc.

The remaining males on the planet will eventually die of starvation as the phone bill has not been paid and they will be unable to order a take-away.

Either that or aliens will blow up Earth with a giant ray gun.

I am with the biological evolution thingy. However, I think it will be sprouts. They will overnight evolve to an extreme gaseous state and come Christmas 3/4 of the world will swell overnight to 5ft diameters and explode.

On seeing this the plants will decide that they have had enough of being ripped out of the ground, their roots torn they will go triffid like and take over the world, using the remaining human population as organic biomass

Probably with the credits rolling, followed by a plug for the sequel.

FORTY TWO?!!!

Increasing over-reliance on computers, followed by a large (solar?) radiation burst which knocks them all out. No food, no factories, no nothing. Then the survivors having to re-learn around 100,000 years of agriculture and so on within just one generation. Bye bye humans.

You didnt put it wont end :(

I dont think it will. Someone will survive.. Might not be us though :( Ive been to a bunker near hull which is a musium (looked for a pic but cant find one) there were about 48 half megatonne Nuclear bombs just for London. Best place to be is north west scottland, none for there.

I can tell you the bunker had 2 one mega tonne warheads set to get it, one of these on ground explosion would leave a crater 1/4 mile across! The bunker would be destroyed, bunker is armoured with 15M concrete with tungston rods inbedded. Doh! They set the siren off for incommin nuclear strike, if you heard it you had 30 seconds before you were incinerated. OMG was that niose the most scary noise i had ever heard? OH YES! :smt022

http://www.rafholmpton.com/ I really would recomend going, its a real eye opener!

In reality for me the biggest threat to man in the future will be food supply, unless some form of culling or a period of non pro creation is introduced worldwide for a year or so.

Unfortunately I can see USA and Russia having a nasty discussion soon turning into world war 3 and spelling the end of civilisation as we know it.

Read RED STORM RISING by Tom Clancy and you'll get an idea of what could happen should Russia run out of oil....

Personally I'm all for something that wipes out at least 5 billion people...this planet is far too busy at it is and only a massive reduction (90% +) in the human population without a reduction in technology can save it IMO.
