I've never really liked it and the last few years its always been a time of year when stuff has gone hideously wrong so it brings back sad memories.
Its the whole falseness of it. i.e. you're supposed to be happy and wish good will and peace on earth to people that the other 364 days of the year I'd happily punch in the face. The fact that it is so commericilised now and it has nothing to do with the orginal purpose of celebrating christmas what so ever.
its the most over rated public holiday evar !!

So you'd rather work than have the holiday?
In case you havent guessed I f*cking hate christmas :p
I like Christmas but it's something I've had to work at. My dad was a miserable **** at Christmas and made life hell, cos he had to be at home with 3 young kids. So I don't have happy memories. I found that reducing expectations, making sure that you're not on top of people all the time and ensuring that everyone has their space, and getting outside for a walk or whatever help enormously.

Yes, but I can do that anytime I want to and I do. So in that respect Christmas is no different than any other time of year.

and getting outside for a walk or whatever (meaning going down the pub  ) help enormously.
Works wonders for me Ed, every xmas, me, my dad, my bro, my grandad and my uncle all go down the pub while the women prepare the dinner :D :smt118
dont you enjoy the spending time with family bit of it all?
HELL NO....not in the slightest little bit.
Spend time with my girlfriend yes, i would happily sit in allday with just her............but spending time running about trying to keep everyone else happy on christmas, no not at all.

My lot weren't like that, Christmas was generally not a happy time. We don't have a close family, if I see my sister once a year that's about average now and as for my brother - well he leads his life and I lead mine. It might shock some when I say that my dad is dead 20 years this year and I don't miss him.
Both Jo and I are looking for private taxi work over Christmas and the New Year.
So long as one of us are in the house to keep the kids safe and entertained we don't care about Christmas. If I could afford it, I would go on a hot holiday with the kids until it was over and done with.
I just hate how commercial the whole thing has become.

Thus far the approach to this coming xmas has been little short of a nightmare. Whether a happier outlook can be adopted will become clearer in the next couple of days. Somehow though, I am not altogether that hopefull.:(

Your very kind to ask Ed, but I will decline the good offer. Much in the same way that if things do work out I will try to suppress my feelings of elation. If it does pan out the immediate future should be very different in so many ways and that in itself will not be without it's own small trials.
Part of my present dilemma is that putting things right is out of my immediate hands and being dealt with in the far east! Increasing the pressure is that my man there is proving to be an inconsiderate ass when it comes to keeping people informed!
But enough of all that..ho,ho,ho.

Bit strange also because "So this is Christmas" isn't actually a track on that album

When my children were little Xmas was special, but now it's the nice 8 days off work that I'm looking forward to most.:D
Pete and I don't make a big deal about Xmas. No decorations or tree (which the cats would destroy in 30 seconds flat anyway), no turkey because we don't particularly like it, and no getting p*ssed as neither of us drink:D
Pete only gets Xmas day and Boxing day off anyway, so we'll chill out on Xmas day, and go out somewhere on the bike on Boxing day.:D
Pete's family all live miles away, and my family are either a fair distance away or have their own family now, which frees us from feeling obliged to either invite them here( and that would be fun, our house isn't child friendly) or go to them. :D
We've bought some nice rear sets for the bike between us, so that's the present issue sorted:D
I'm not a Christmas-hater, but without young children, it's just another day.
Looking forward to seeing family and friends to spending some time with my husband and to chilling out i haven't spent much time with anyone this year with work and moving house
then looking forward to 2 weeks in the Bahamas in January

Christmas like everything is all down to your own personal perception and if you allow yourself to get dragged away in the flood of comercialism. It really does not have to be that way at all. It is the comercialism that people kick against in truth. The idea of christmas all of those cheesey Disney and christmas card images are beautiful.
Watching kids open presents, a surprise gift for that special person in your life, a close knit group sitting down to enjoy a large feast together. All special moments.
Early planning and discipline over the present budget can go a long way to removing a lot of the stress as so can ignoring the latest singing and dancing "whatever" which is being thrust at you via TV adverts.
Christmas is a nice time of year, enjoy the simple concept for what it is.

Good post!
When the kids were little I was struggling to bring them up on my own. I didn't have much money, so every month I spent part of their child benefit on Christmas presents. They never had big, expensive toys, but the sheer joy on their faces when they sat on my bed Christmas morning opening their stockings was the best part of the day.

Lissa,
I hear you loud and clear. In my family money was tight when we were kids, yet the small gifts we did receive thrilled us. Things that my own son would'nt be arsed even to unwrap if he knew what was inside.
And so I think coming from such a humble background really puzzles me how people with so much more in their lives than we had, just cannot enjoy this simple time of year.

Maybe because there IS so much pressure these days. Children can get bullied for not having the fashionable clothes, the latest gadgets, the trendy toys. And TV bombards the kids and parents with all the must-have items, all designed to make you feel that you're depriving your little darlings if you don't buy them. It's a 'if you don't get your children these you don't love them enough' insinuation from September onwards.
I'm just glad my three are grown up and I don't have to deal with this any more:D

It's sadly not that simple. I come form a very ordinary background, we weren't poor but we weren't wealthy either. But as I've said above, my father was a miserable git with an unpredictable, mercurial and violent temper. Even after 40 years I can't forget it, much as I'd like to.

Your right of course. You know I think we were particularly blessed with our son. He is now 17, but throughout his childhood it was like pulling teeth trying to get him to give you an indication of what he might like for christmas. Even I thought this so strange as every other child in my family had these outrageously long lists!
Luckily my good lady being a typical mum, was always able to come up with a selection of things that he was each time over the moon to receive in the end.

I hear you Ed> I had a similar childhood for the same reason.
Maybe that was why I was always determined to make Christmas special for my three, even if they didn't get very much.

Ed...I think it's time for you to lock that aspect away in a box somewhere. Why let the past constantly seep in to your enjoyment of christmas as an adult with your own wife and daughter? You know I'm right.
