View Full Version : Is it safe to repair a tyre

Hi guys, I have just been cleaning the bike, and found a nice self tapping screw lodged in the front tyre. The tyre seemed to be well inflated so decided to remove the screw to see just how far it had gone though. Considering the amount of hissing I got once I removed the screw, I would assume that it has gone all the way though... Doh. Is it safe to get the tyre repaired, or should I go and buy a new one? Not had the bike long, from new the tyre has only done 491 miles.

If you take it a proper tyre place and they repair the tyre with a proper mushroom plug then yes its safe to repair it and use the tyre till the end of its natural life.
Some places might not repair it, and also it does depend on where the screw has gone in, if its in the sidewall or near the edge of the tyre then you might find that you won't get anybody to repair it.
Liz has a proper plug in her rear tyre at the moment with no problems and it cost £25 to get it repaired which is much less than the price of a new tyre.
Why do you always get punctures in a new tyre...

I'll second that, I get a screw in my tyre as well, it was near the middle of the tyre....
I took my bike to a good bike shop, they fixed it for me, they took the tyre and repaired it from the inside out, my bike is fine now. Just make sure they do a proper repair job on it and its plugged.
Good luck with the repair!
I got a screw in my 130 mile old rear tyre and got it plugged for £20, been as good as new since
i got a screw smack bang in middle of a brand new rear tyre, went and got it professionally plugged-no probs at all, even did a trackday with it in :)
So that'll be a yes then.
I repaired it myself with Crafty Plugger. Was very happy with it for the rest of it's life.

Probably safer than fitting a 180 that you got for free.

As has been said, a proper tyre place 'mushroom' type internal repair is good to go, admittedly mine have only been in the rear, but bearing in mind not a single problem from rear ones, I'd have no real qualms about getting one down in the front!! :smt045
If however your tyre is ZR rated, they are not supposed/allowed to repair it (or so I was told when I tried to get a ZR tyre repaired once).
Probably safer than fitting a 180 that you got for free.
Who above are you referring to? and why is is deemed as less than safe?

Me.
And no idea really, just a mismatched, odd sized tyre seems a little dodgy. Not found any tyre levers yet though so can't tell you if it works.
Also the last thread I saw on the subject some people were concerned.
I think it'll be right untill I can get my avon plugged

That was probably my thread!! :D
I fitted a 180 macadam to my stock SV rim, people assured me I only had moments to live running a 180!!

I assure you you have only moments to live fitting a macadam
The one I've got is a michelin pilot sport 180, dunno what that'll be like, what sort of tyre is it anyway?
Dickis - dunno where abouts you are in Leeds, but I'd recommend Woosters to get it fixed - real helpful and decent prices.
