My antique nokia 5100 has finally died :( And I haven't a clue what's good these days. I just to swap my sim into something that's got a half-decent camera and maybe an MP3 player, not too small, not too big, and it's got to be reasonably tough as I'm a clumsy eejit. Nokia for preference since I can work those, and under £100. Any ideas? Used/reconditioned is fine...

I recommend you go to a large mobile phone shop and check out some of the mobiles yourself for looks, size, feel and features.

Every time I set foot inside a mobile shop I end up buying an expensive mobile or contract  That's why I've not been in one for about 6 years, I'm not safe! But you're right of course, that's one of the things I'll do. Just doing a wee bit of background, but online reviews are pretty useless since whatever was great yesterday is suddenly out of date today it seems.

I bought a nokia 1100 for £10 new, prolly the best phone I've had. Battery lasts 2 weeks and its got a torch, which is far more use than a camera or mp3 or facetube or whatever they have now.

I have a Nokia 6300 - You can get them for approx 70-80 quid in an 02 shop (I got an extra £15 off because I was an existing 02 customer).
It is a really good phone - looks good and is easy/simple to use. It doesnt have really fancy technology/a brilliant camera like some of the more expensive phones, but for me, it does the job. I only use it to text and make phone calls - no listening to music (I have an mp3 player for that), no taking pictures/making videos etc.
My boss bought about 6 of them for all the staff in my area (me included so i now have to carry two of them around with me everywhere!).
As someone else said, it would be good to go into a shop and physically look at some phones - see their size, how they look, how they feel in your hand (some are ultra chunky, others are super slim) and all the rest of it. That might help you narrow down your search a little :)

Here's a site which may be useful to narrow it down before you go out.

I hate shopping so do as much 'homework' on anything I buy before setting foot into a shop.

Well they call it a torch, but its a really bright white LED - good enough to see around with though.

The 5100 has a torch as well, it's ace... But not very common now I think. I only want the camera and MP3 player for those times when I've not got my camera or MP3 player ;)

Sony erricson have some good phones, stay away from the W850i though as mine keeps searching the internet, downloading apps and making calls whilst in my pocket!! (Think this may only be a problem with the phone on the orange network)
K800i. Sony Ericssons are a piece of cake to use. They go for less than £80 now, and the camera is genuinely decent "for a phone" with autofocus and a flash too. I got one about a month or two ago and I love it.

I have a Nokia 6300
Agreed I have one, really neat slim small phone really pleased with mine, it has toys but they dont interfere with its core purpose i.e. it's a really good phone.
I'd recommend ebay for doing some hunting too - if you're not looking for the latest and greatest, you can usually pick up a good deal there.
The K800i is a good phone, the lens sliding cover it a tad easy to open by accident though. Cracking camera mind. I'd consider a K750i if you can get one as its a tad smaller and has a better lens cover, only 2m pix instead of 3 of the K800 but images are pretty good and the LED light can be used as a torch. The Sony joystick although good is a weak point compared to Nokia alternatives.

sony ericsson 810i. light, decent camera, mp3. it doesnt have the joy stick so thats one less problem. it takes the memory stick pro duo which are dead cheap now, its easy to use and very robust. mines been dropped so many times an still going. (phones dont seem to like me very much but this ones lasted) i use it down the garage for the light when working on the bikes. and i think they are only around £50. great phone. o and its a nice size not to big not to small.

Amazing that Phil, up until getting the Nokia 6120, the W850i was the best phone I have ever had. Have you tried setting it to go on auto key lock?
I've never seen a truly good picture taken with a mobile phone. That's why I bought a Canon Ixus which slots into my biking jacket pocket, even with the case on it.

No it's just that the 2 raised keys unlock the phone (or indeed sliding it open a touch) the the button on the corner accesses the web (on orange versions). Bloody good phone other than that, oh, and the short battery life when making calls.

I have a nokia 6300 for work (also bought one for my bro for £40 from O2) and I have a Ericsson.....slightly older one, but has MP3 and 2mp camera. Both are tops. The nokia has a much better screen than the older Sony Ericsson. If u want a basic phone, that still acts like a nokia, get the 6300, u get some top deals now! (No torch tho!)

Excellent, thanks folks, very useful start- I'm leaning towards the 6300 or similiar just now, I'll see what I see when I get into the shops. At least now I have a slight clue instead of no clue at all :thumleft:

I have one of those too.
Before that I had a normal 6230 which fell out of my Bandit's tankbag at 120 and still lives. It needed a new case, battery and memory card, but fired up and has been back in service with my ex for well over a year. I only went back for it to get the sim-card out, but saw the chassis was still in one bit. Indestructible.
I am not a fan of the Nokia 6230i. I got given one for work and gave it back after a few months. The battery life is shockingly awful (by my standards), the camera isn't really any good, radio pretty pants. Keypad is ok but still not brilliant. Oh did I mention the awful battery life?
Work replaced it with a Sony-Ericsson W880i. It's got a great form factor and that I really like. Battery life is still awful (again by my standards).
So my weapon of choice - old school Nokia 6310i No camera, no MP3, no colour screen but battery lasts perhaps 2 weeks between charges and it's bloody indestructable.
All in all my post hasn't been very helpful. Sorry. Blame those that mentioned the phrase sixty-two-thirty.
Battery life doesn't bother me because I stick mine on charge every night. When I was working as a sales rep the phone lived in a proper wired up handsfree cradle in the car, so charging wasn't a worry then either.
