I like heavy metal. I listen to Metallica (not so heavy metal these days, I admit), megadeth, symphony X, children of bodom, iron maiden mostly.
Thing is, sometimes this just isnt enough, sometimes the music (even bodom, which is maybe the heaviest stuff in my collection) just dosnt get as heavy or as thrashy as I want it to.
So, all you metalheads out there, recoomend me something heavy that I can headbang too until i cant's headbang no more!

Suppose it depends what you like/look for in a metal band. For me I never got into the drudgy monotonous grinding riff thing - best way I can describe it, just the same note over and over, staccato with lots of distortion - but found melodious stuff with real powerhouse choruses to be more my thing.
Cases in point would be System of a Down, Rammstein, Tool (not quite so chorusy that one)
I was just listening to Guns And Roses. Does this count as heavy metal :?:

Pantera and machine head are my next stop i think, i did have some machine head but lost the 5 tracks i downloaded, i keep forgetting just how nice and heavy they are
Guns n roses not heavy enough for me. Maybe its because i dont like axl rose.
Keep them coming :D

i second that.
You may also like:
Strapping Young Lad, or any of Devin Townsend's other projects, including Ocean Machine, Devin Townsend Band). Noteworthy SYL records include Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, and City. They are brilliant!
If you are looking for stuff that sounds like the stuff you already listen to, try www.pandora.com. It's an ace music programme, where you key in the music you like, and it uses that to find you music you may also like, quite a genius little gizmo.
Others I can think of:

Anthrax

Oooh yes yes yes me me me I just thought of one!!
Lightning Bolt
It's probably not classed as metal (again) but it is bloody heavy and sounds like nothing but noise when you first hear it. Then you wonder why you listen again, and again, and then it never leaves the cd player. Only two guys as well, one drummer, one bassist.
I direct you here (http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/lightningbolt/hypermagicmountain) for reviews on metacritic, very good scores putting it 4th on their list of best albums in 2005.

Oh, and another (damn my slow brain)
Kyuss
They were a stoner/desert rock band in which Josh Homme & Nick Oliveri as well (I think) played before forming Queens of the Stone Age. I recommend starting with the 'Welcome to Sky Valley' album.

some more for you:
Killing Joke (the new and the 80s stuff)
Apocalyptica (Swedish? Norwegian? Very eclectic with double bass/violin, etc. worth checking out)
Dream Theatre (prog rock, check out train of thought)
Nine Inch Nails (more industrial rock, but very very good. check out The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine)
Rammstein (cliche as it is, they ARE good. best live band i ever did see. check out Sehnsucht)
System of a Down (Mezmerise/Hypnotise are my faves)
Can think of a million others in my cd collection but i fear it may get boring.

The link further up pointing out pandora.com is your best bet, although I like www.last.fm - type in what you like there and you'll get some really random stuff, but you can tune it with thumbs up and down buttons to point it in the right direction. Should be good to find things you wouldn't have thought of before.
slipknot, stone sour, cradle of filth, soil, trivium. drowning pool, system of a down, staind (their earlier stuff), black sabbeth, slayer, saliva, ill nino, coal chamber, fear factory, mudvayne, deftones, rob zombie, killswitch engage, disturbed.
I can post more when ive finished going through me cd's (Huge metal fan here :) )

>edit- just read all the preceding posts!< For Dream Theater, try Train of Thought. It gets BLOODY heavy at times. Also, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence has got a good mix- the opening track- The Glass Prison is FIERCE in a very Metallica way with awesome guitar stuff on it.
Black Label Society- also very, very heavy- Zakk Wylde's side project when he's not playing with Ozzy.
You could also try some less heavy but good stuff- Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult- their first 4 albums(Blue Oyster Cult, Tyranny and Mutation, Secret Treaties and Agents of Fortune) are all must haves and also Imaginos, if you can find it (I could provide you with a trial version until you get it!!- but it'll be a second hand bargain, as it's not currently in print). Also a good bit of Metal History- I don't think that Iron Maiden would have been the same without BOC, Sabbath and Deep Purple, frinstance.
AC/DC, while not that heavy, are always good for an 'ead bangin' session!
Hawkwind were great- not so much metal as psychedelic rock (space-rock), but awesome nonetheless- try Live Chronicles as a first tase- quite rockier than their early stuff.

Some awesome metal bands mentioned thus far. Hovis is in the lead for most awesome bands named though ;). Alpine- Symphony X are amazing! Saw them supporting Dream Theater a few months back. DT were pretty boring though. I loved DT's Images & Words/Awake/Metropolis Pt.2 but the rest never got me.
More bands that are awesome -
Pain of Salvation (try Perfect Element I or Remedy Lane)
Strapping Young Lad (already mentioned, but a second mention is deserved, try City or Alien, seriously heavy in a wall-of-well-articulated-sound kind of way)
Dimmu Borgir (Try Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, its modern black metal, so more harsh vocally)
Opeth (A personal favourite, try Black Water Park, combines awesome acoustic guitar and clean vocals with fairly abrassive death metal)
Nevermore (another favourite, with more groove than a mere mortal should ever indulge, though some people don't like the guys vocal style, try Dead Heart in a Dead World)
There's a million more where that come from, both lighter and heavier
I like a lot of this stuff people have mentioned.

Mad capsule markets crazy Japanese band, dont know what they are shoutin about 99% of the time, great live!
Their live shows were fantastic, with all the crowd interaction written on a bit of paper. "Hello Glasgow London! We... thank your... rocking! We very, please. This XXX Can Of This rock!" I like meaningless japlish :thumleft: It should be terrible, but it's great. And such a weird mix of music, like a mix of the Wildhearts and Atari Teenage Riot.
If anyone feels like stretching their ears a little the Mad Capsule Markets are amazing, as are some Atari Teenage Riot tracks (though a lot are just noise, try Atari Teenage Riot II for a sample). And I already mentioned Pitchshifter, but their album www.pitchshifter.com (http://www.pitchshifter.com) is absolutely legendary. And Dub War, the album Pain, download the track Gorrit if you want a taster. And Refused, though I can't recommend the entire album download the track New Noise, what a track.
And... Oh, I shouldn't recommend Hundred Reasons and Million Dead in this thread at all since they're not metal, but they are both incredibly good at what they do (Million Dead took hardcore punk and gave it a heart and a brain, and a tune, while Hundred Reasons are part old-school hard rock, part punk... Like happy emo, I suppose :) "If I Could" is maybe the best track to try, or "What You Get" or "Broken Hands". One day they'll release an album that's good all the way through
This is pretty cool:

Theres a whole other world out there... and I'm not part of it. I thought I enjoyed most music but this is one genre I never really got into.
5 of those bands on Hovis's list I have heard of before - and probably because I have seen them printed on a T-shirt rather than heard anything from them.
Was You Tubing some of this stuff - its so hard to sift through the too heavy stuff and come out with something enjoyable.
Pitchshifter - liked that anyway - not so heavy though I think is why.

Pitchshifter - liked that anyway - not so heavy though I think is why.
Yeah, it's sort of differently heavy if you see what I mean, some of their stuff is more traditionally heavy like Microwaved and Virus, but the sound's very different from most heavy music. More of a headbanging challenge than most thrash though, with the time changes and dance beats.
Oh dear peeps, where is Avenged Sevenfold in this topic of discussion? Check em out, you might like it. Heavist album is either Sounding the Seventh Trumpet or Waking the Fallen :)
