if you have messages popping up saying you need to get spyware protection, the chances are that you actually have something on your system, the popups are a ploy to get you to go to a website and download more malware, thinking that you are curing the popups...

This is a alternative that's all done online. All that is downloaded is a couple of java files. http://prerelease.trendmicro-europe.com/hc66/launch/
I recommend spyware terminator, plus AVG, crap cleaner ( now called C Cleaner ) and eumig reg cleaner, although tbh I dont use eumig very often.

What he said.
I use Adaware because it works and its free, but it doesnt shift some of the malware, so you might want to try a couple of products.

thanks........... just doing the AVG one for starters, i had this before, and it seemed to do the trick, my pc has been fine until i went on limewire, i have heard that you can pick up things off there?
just done the AVG one, it took 57 mins and did not find owt?
Limewire - just don't do it.
Some of the best security you can use on a PC is common sense and sensible precautions. Don't use peer-to-peer software, don't open emails you aren't expecting or are suspicous of, don't run attachments willy nilly, don't just click to install brower extensions etc.
Adding software to fix a problem you create yourself seems... daft to me.

In addition to those mentioned above....
Windows defender is free. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Yahoo toolbar also includes free anti spyware, but if I remember rightly you have to run it manually, it doesn't do a scheduled scan, I could be wrong.
I didn't see a recommendation for two products I think are very good in this - Spybot S&D and HijackThis!. The latter is a bit technical for the average user, but it will wipe out some of the more hellish spyware out there.
Both are free, but are subject to scams where you're forced to pay for it - if that isn't a sign of quality, I don't know what is.

so what do you sugest?
Have you defragged your system lately, wont actually stop spyware but will have it running a bit better, btw one of the best spyware progs is from a firm called commodo but is a parently not for the faint hearted in both setting up and running
Have you defragged your system lately
who?
Right Im no expert here, but as your system works it moves around files and the files get a bit disorganised and it can slow your system down , go to start, all programs, accessories then scroll down to system tools and click on defrag, when you get to defrag it will give you the chioce to analyze it, if you havent defragged before it will probably need doing and it can take a while but might be worth doin it though, like I say Im no expert but there plenty of I.T. bods on here so might be worth waiting for what they suggest

Assumming its spyware/malware here is a little guide for you from the Majorgeeks forum, don't let the name worry you:

I usually use, ad-aware, CW shedder, Hijack this and C Cleaner, all can be got from the majorgeek forum:

Otherwise how old is the PC, How much memory and hard drive space does it have? Might be your trying to run to much on the PC and its slowing down.

another useful tool is the sysinternals rootkit revealer. Rootkits can hide quite well from other av and spyware tools

Used limewire for years and had no problems yet, only had virus's detected a handfull of times all of which my AV software dealt with long before it becme a problem.
I you use your brain when your downloading and you have proper protection (oo-er!) you limit the risk quite considerably.

For best all round protection Linux or OS X are the way to go. I've never had a virus or spyware infection with either.

I know it can be a pain but if you don't have a great deal of "stuf" on you PC that you can't reinstall a complete format and reinstall will sort it out and you'll have a nice speedy PC in the end. Don't forget to back up your data :)
