I know a way, but it'll cost you £50.

Ride 5000 miles.

Chris, I know you're a bit of a slow rider but do you really get 500 miles to a
gallon???? :smt003:smt103

No exhaust at the minute, I'd be pushing.

Edit: OK I lied, my exhaust is back on, I just can't count 0's :-P

Redial in Southend will put the miles on for you. They offer this service for just the reason you've stated. They also take miles off if you've bought a used clock with more miles recorded than your bike really has.

I bet I can guess what service they get more call for.

The way I've done this on other bikes is to conect the end of the spedo cable to the chuck of an electric drill. Make sure it has a locking trigger, and let it wind on the miles for you. Just don't let it go too far because you can't wind them back.
Mind you from what I remember of the speedo drive on the SV, this may be tricky because the end is too big to fit in the chuck.

Advertise on Ebay for someone who has a bike with 11,000 on it. I'm sure they would swop clocks with you...! In fact you could probably get some money on top...

Leave it and explain to the buyer the situation. I would be more inclined to buy a bike with an honest owner telling me there is more miles on it. Than one with a wonky mile counter. I would leave it an keep the receipt for the dials in your history.

How long would it take to wind on 5000 miles on a drill... Wheel circumference with tyre is about 1.75m if memory serves, which is .001 of a mile more or less, so 1000rpm = 1 mile, so 5 million revs for 5000 miles. Say a 3000rpm drill it'd take nearly 28 hours. Though that might not work since that's about 180 mph effective speed, wonder if the speedo can deal with that or if it'd top out.

Am I just talking absolute rubbish? Can someone who can count check my maths? ;)

hang on a minute - there's no speedo cable its all electricerey. You'd have to spin the wheel or fool the Hall Effect sensor with a signal generator or something.

There is a sensor which goes round with the wheel, this is where you would conect the drill.
I have to admit the only bikes I have done this on where of 1950s vintage

Well yeah, but all you have to do is mount the rotor to the drill and the drive to... something else. Though not many home drills have a 27 hour duty cycle :D

Would it be possible to measure the signal from the speed sensor as the wheel rotates, then set up a signal generator connected in place of the sensor, set at suitable voltage and frequency, to add the miles?

just add the miles on in your head and when coming to sell the bike simply tell the next person... or tell them so they can to tell the next person, and so on.
