IIRC, you can board a domestic flight with only a driving license for ID (any picture ID will suffice, I think) but I think a EU passport is needed to fly out of the UK.
I've gone to my local passport office and collected one on the same day but that was a while ago and during the week. Sorry I can't be more positive and gutted for your mate if that's the case.

"Passport validity
All British passport holders require a valid passport. There is no minimum passport validity requirement but you should ensure that your passport is valid for the proposed period of your stay"
I thought you just needed a photo driving licence too!
Check the airline website/ring the airline.....

In theory yes, but in practice unlikely. Easy-Jet for instance state you must have a passport as id, even for internal flights. tossers!

have you tried getting a new passport issued urgently? He might not make the flight, but perhaps he can change the flight to a later one/the next day and still make some of the holiday?

Otherwise I suggest he spends the whole night turning his house upside-down!
PS. from experience I think he'd have more luck winging it on the coach than at the airport

Thanks dude.
We're going with Surrey Uni. Coaches are driving to France tonight and some people (us), are flying tomorrow morning. He's got a 6yr old passport, apparently you can travel to France on a passport that's less than 5yrs old
I thought that UK passports were valid for 10 years. Am I wrong?

Don't do that, do this:
http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/lost-uk.asp
It's official, open 24 hrs and it's free - if he reports it lost or 'stolen' there may be a way around.
am afraid he's screwed http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/travel-europe.asp#carry
had same problem on xmas eve for a flight to france from dubai, then i looked "one more time but there's no point" in a place i'd looked a dozen times - and then suddenly it was there so keep looking!

Same here, chances are they will take the "group leaders" passport and he vouches for the group with him as all being known to him and legit etc.
Good luck with it tho.

lol...i dont fink that's likely, al qaeda and every other terror group would like that one!
ps how r u zig?
If a passport has expired and you still have the old one then same day replacement is possible- we turned up at the Passport Office in Victoria at 10:30 with no appointment, had a new passport at 15:30 same day (cost £120)
If the passport is lost then he is screwed as additional 'fraud checks' are required which means same day is not possible.
i cant believe he waited til day before trip before looking for passport. i looked mine out the other day a nd the kids and we are not going on holiday til July lol
