View Full Version : Unexpected whining on Suzy??

Ok over the weekend I gets her out to go to work as usual. Now before you all say its wind through the fairing-I have various rattles and stuff from the faring and this sounds different.
Now over 3 and half thousand revs this whining kicks in and when you slow down and let off throttle it disappears.
I thought it were wind through my helmet or summat, but, Im Indoors borrowed her to go to work and it was HIM that pointed it out to ME. He also knows that bike inside out and would know if it were just 'wind' and fairings.
He said that he thinks it may be the fuel pump....he seen this happen on another bike, but Chris has argued it can't be the case.

So guys I now open the arguement up for you..........what is this god damn whining that has come from nowhere...and if you lot can't offer a suggestion I'm going to have to let Chris 'test drive' a full power bike to hear it for himself:rolleyes:.

On a private road of course I hasten to add, before the mass debate starts.

Personally I can't see it being the fuel pump, and since it apparently traces engine speed (above 3.5k) and doesn't change with the gear you're in. I'd guess clutch. But it's just a guess.

serious clutch or minor. New clutch cable to go on anyway........thats after you try freeing the old one off at the bottom. Its welded on!!

No idea, told you I was guessing.

apparently said whining, is from the engine, chris can't put his finger on it, so we spoke to Mr spannerman who put him in the right direction.......Suzy is poorly sick, theres talk of cams, bores pistons and far too many troubleshooting ideas for me to understand

oh and she's leakin oil from her left side casing

Most of the time I've heard a whine from a moving bike it's been the chain. This is cheaper than the bores and cams being shot to hell, so humour me and check it out...

Whatever it is, I hope it's cheap. If the oil is leaking from the left side near the front sprocket cover this may be because the front sprocket nut is loose, allowing the oil seal too, well, not. This can give you a drive train noise and oil leak.....

I'm a cheery optimist though.....

Potentially daft question- Is it in every gear? Mine whines in first when I get to a few thou revs- but that sounds like the same whine as a car in reverse (if you unnerstan whut I mean)- reckon this is a normal thing, as it's never caused problems...

no. I'll clarify our findings, Suzy has aquired an uncharactoristic whine over 3000 revs. I thought it was whilst riding but earlier today we started her up and revved her over 3000 in nuetral and she is whining then also. This is coupled with a rather large amount of oily, stinky cloud from her exhaust whilst the choke is on. This has been noticeable on cold start for a couple of months, but the whining has just started at the weekend.

The oily stinky smoke could be due to either the valve guides, or seals, being worn, allowing oil to leak past the guides into the cylinder while it's stood overnight etc - that's if it stinks of oil. If that's the case the whine could be the noise the valves make when they really start rattling at faster speeds.

Have you carried out a cylinder pressure test? What colour are your spark plugs?

On the other hand, I had wondered where my missus was this weekend and why my bike no longer has a whining noise. Drop her home afterwards :)

haven't touched her yet. chris only popped up to hear it. Was going to take her for a spin but was noticeable in neutral so no need. Can't get the plugs and all the rest til, he's got some room in his garage. So as yet we've done nothing to diagnose this properly

The oily smoke does seem to indicate that oil is making it into the cylinder(s) somehow - probably overnight, and normally a pressure test would indicate lack of compression - i.e. a leak somewhere. The colour of the plugs would indicate what it's buring. If it's burning oil, blue foul smelling smoke and the plugs are black, then it indicates worn valve stems/seals.

Hope you get it fixed whatever it is.

Hmm, you mentioned burning oil when the choke is on... Do you think it's more "oil when cold", can't see oil and the choke being connected...

It's oil when cold, it's still burning oil visibly when the chokes off, I also can't see a connection with the choke. It's definately NOT rich smoke, it reeks of oil.

Also it can't be the chain, as its noticeable when revving it stationary. (the chain is pretty knackered, but thats not significant to this noise IMO)

I doubt its the clutch, as the noise doesn't change when the clutch is pulled in or when you let it bite with it in gear.

Had a prod around with the screwdriver stethoscope and as far as I can figure its a rustly whining coming from the front head area, tracing engine speed. Couldn't hear it below 3krpm but that doesn't mean its not there.

Next step is to see how much oil is getting into the airbox, if this is excessive then I'm tihnking bores worn or a sticky ring.

If not then that doesn't mean oil isnt going the other way, so will pull the plugs and see which cylinder is misbehaving.

Going to order a compression tester to have a proper look.

Hope this isn't 'teaching grandma to suck eggs' but there's a tab, underneath the ferrule on the end of the clutch cable, that has to be bent down before the cable end can be removed (this is on a K3 BTW).
