Hi guys,
I don't want to put a downer on everything, and this dosn't affect many of you, but there are some people who use so-called "text langauge" when they type posts. Everyone makes typo's every now and then, and everyone makes spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
But these are accidental, and most of you try to write as best you can in the queens english :)
But for those who insist on using "text langauge", can you refrain please? It makes it hard to 1) read the posts and 2) understand any requests made.
Cheers,
Matt

Also if you cant be bothered to communicate fluently and clearly, why should anyone be bothered to reply.
Put some effort in guys.

It also seems, that no matter how much we politely hint, correct posts and generally take the pi$$, people who post in "txt spk" (you know who you are) never seem to get the hint!

Is it because they can't read real words?
my daughter sends text full of that stuff and it takes me ages to read her texts. i assumed it was because i was old - obviously not on my own

Put it this way, I though the "Grumpy Old Men" programme on the TV was a well thought out documentary!
I text in proper English :( I'm obviously not "down with the kids" :(

i would do this, but half the time there just isn't the space in the message and being a bit of a tight git i like to keep it to one message ;)

My elder kids used to do that, until I sent one back saying "In English please". The younger two learned from the elder two's mistakes.

It's not just kids, my sister sends texts in such "language", and she's two years older than me. I usually reply "And in English that means..?"
She hasn't got the hint yet, and I still struggle to find out what she may have meant.
I never use text speak, although I have no problem understanding it. I hate it, I just think it's lazy.
All my family do. Including my Mum. I give up when I recieve messages like that and wait for a normal one to come through.

Most of my texts are grammatically correct, I don't see the point in having to send another one explaining what my "txt spk" was referring to - it defeats the object - and the object of text speak is to save money - its not because folk are lazy (that's just a by-product) ;-)
Only text speak I use in texts is "txt", "l8r" and maybe a few chat synonyms like "LOL" or "OMG".
I can understand most of it, but I'd just rather not use it.
im not to keen on it, but think that some of its ok

To be honest, I don't even see the point in text messaging. You send somebody a text, they send one back, and you reply to that. It would be far cheaper to use a telephone properly and have a short conversation. More information can be exchanged in one minute on the phone than messing about for 10 minutes gaining RSI to the phalanges.
I do use texts for one purpose. Alerting & information etc. When my computers are playing silly devils I get sent a text message to say what service/system/application has failed etc.

Another one that has obviously been surfing the porn. Some of the keys on your keyboard appear to be stuck, particularly the Y,E and O. Now what was it Arenalife said about the users of "text speech" earlier
if i remember corectly it was discussed a while ago to see if kids should be able to use it in English exams as it has made it into normal life, how stupid is that??

Nope ... that'll be the coffee (sticking the keys) ... as I'm in work and strangely enough my client/employer doesn't seem to think that I should be allowed to surf for porn because Business Intelligence is far more stimulating (yeah right!)
EDIT: See? Keyboard has now dried out enough for the Y, E, and O to work properly now :)
Using my keyboard, it costs me absolutely nothing extra to type extra text to the forum!
I use full English in my texts too. They throw in so many hundred of the things a month on my contract I can afford it ;)

I find that there tends to be a link between how poorly written something is and how bad the associated advice is. If posts are difficult to read, I don't bother reading them anymore. This is especially true when people are asking for help.

I disagree with that ... on the whole you may be right, but there are certainly exceptions to that rule ... just ask anyone with dyslexia.
Sometimes their posts are difficult to read (admittedly), but show them some respect at least and don't tar them with the same brush. Just because they are dyslexic doesn't make their advice or their request for advice any less worthy than anyone elses ;-)

There is a huge and noticeable difference between dyslexic writing and txt speak.

Doesn't even mention text speak and is IMO a fairly sweeping generalisation (and an unfair one in this case).

Glad we're all on a similar wavelength here, i was worried about causing a riot. Some things are ok - like the abreviations of commonly encountered phrases (providing that, if someone dosn't understand them, then someone informs them straight away) and expressions of actions (e.g. 'lol', although in fairness there are emoticons to avoid using stuff like that).
I wonder if any of the people who do use text-speak on here (you know who you are, and we know who you are, but I'm not naming names) have read this thread?
Matt

Does it bother people if shortened versions of words are used then? for example: gonna (going to), wanna (want to) etc?

hmm ok. I've not come across one of those types of posts :smt104 just as well!! see what you mean now. I had to read that 2 or 3 times to fully understand it and I'm fairly familiar with text language...

Yes. they are not real words and typical of the slovenly way that some people speak. High horse time I am afraid. I cannot abide this type of speech. Britain is still a very class conscious society, and nothing is guaranteed to place somebody as the poor use of the English language.
I would correct my children when they talked in this manner. I just wish all parents would
