Punched summit rather solid the other night, now already have a busted knuckle anyway so seeing that dissapear backwards and inwards is normal, it happens all the time. Thing is there is a bruise, and lots of swelling further down my hand and it is a bit of a discomfort when riding the bike. Assuming possibly the impact crushed/fractured a metacarpal, can i get anything done about it as it will cause discomfort if on long rides.

I did that once, punched someone... er, something... rather solid and crack, crushed the knuckle end of my right pointing finger. It was pretty much knackered for ages but now it's fine, no discomfort, I stupidly didn't go to the hospital till 2 weeks after so all they could do was check it was healing- if I'd gone in sooner they could have set it better for a stronger repair and a better position, as it is the knuckle'll wear out fast and I'll have to learn to use my left hand for pointing with.

So, go and see a doctor ;)

Signs/Symptoms of a break/fracture.....

Swelling
Loss of movement
Inflammation
Pain
Deformity
Unusual movement
Crepitus (that creaky/grinding noise)
Tenderness

Get it checked out at A and E... yes you could have damaged something and it might be that it needs strapping up. Take some ibuprofen 400mg, (assuming you don`t have asthma or an ulcer) one tab three times a day and that should help with the pain and swelling but it really needs x raying

If you go to A&E I doubt there's anything they can/will do to be honest. I did the same a while back......managed to "hit" a wall as my "mate" at the time ducked......it's known as a boxer's fracture

All they did for me was give me some painkillers. My knuckle on my right hand was (and still is) impacted a bit, but because I hadn't broken my arm or any fingures they didn't put me in a splint or cast.

Let us know how you get on :D

With mine, they would have manipulated the knuckle while it was still floating, so that it ended up pointing in the right direction. I don't think there's much they can do as far as supporting healing but they could definately have made mine heal back a better shape. At the very least it's worth getting it checked out.

Oh, after extensive personal testing I've found codeine and paracetemol works better for hard tissue damage, ibuprofen for soft ;) I'm not a doctor, just a fragile idiot, so take that as it comes.

Codeine and paracetamol are both just painkillers... you need an anti inflammatory, best of which are either ibuprofen which you can buy in a chemist or voltarol (Diclofenac Sodium) but you need a prescription for that. Anti inflammatories can be taken with paracetamol to enhance the painkilling properties.

Anti inflammatory might do the healing some good, but painkillers ... give it a rest ... plowsie's no wuss, he's gonna let the dog lick and then take it like a man!!

when I hit some wet leave 2 years ago down Londonish way... Yes it as that long ago... it was 2 months before my free floating thumb was diagnoised. Then it was pinned and plated back together....
Hurt like a mofo...
get to A&E and insist on an X-Ray.

other useful advice... count to 10 and walk away...
hitting things only makes you feel better for about 0.5 second before the pain start to make itself present.
and what did the wall ever do to you?

you big bully.

Fair enough- I was prescribed cocodamol for both my broken hand and broken hip, but never anti-inflamatories since the swelling in both cases was incidental to the actual injury... So I figured if this is a break, the doctors would most likely treat it the same. Glad I put on the "I am not a doctor" disclaimed though!

Right been A n E this morning, x-rayed, the fridge i punched 2 years ago did more damage it seems, my right little finger knuckle is cracked in half slightly and shifted backwards out of place (which would explain my dainty finger when i drink lol) the knuckle inside it is just missing a piece of bone which is no trouble, and as thought i've fractured the second metacarpal (think it is), docs reply...We cant really do anything with it, can i reccomend you stop punching things though...

3 hours in there i tell ya!

Speak to Phil about his messed up knuckle. I nearly threw up when I saw what they did to it at A&E.
Could it be dislocated, punch something again and maybe it will go back in!!!
