Bonjour mon amis :) +1 for the river trip - that's supposed to be good - nice n romantic ;-) You can do shopping anywhere ... if you've only got a day in Paris, I'd consider that a waste really IMHO. Eiffel tower is good ... run up n down those steps and you'll lose a few pounds ;-) :-P

Go up to Scre Coure. It is absolutely stunning and the view of the city from up there is amazing. Also go to the arc de Triomfe (sp) the view from the top again is superb and you get to watch the cars trying to get round the worlds most ridiculous roundabout. Then wonder down the main shopping road that the arc is on. It's a long road and the is the obilisk and fountains at the bottom, with the louvre a bit further on. It is a very long walk though so needs to be a nice day to walk the whole way down.

I went to Paris a couple of years ago. It had never appealed to me but I knew the other half fancied it. I was amazed by the place. I would go back again tomorrow. There is so much to see, you will not fit it in in one day. I would definately do Scre Couer though.

Also the latin quater is very very nice. and Notre damme cathedral there is an impressive sight.

Enjoy.

as mentioned, go to the sacre couer, absolutely stunning and when leaving go right to the monmatre area behind the cathedral, its where the artists do their thing. loads of cafes there where you can people watch and watch the artists plying their trade

get on the metro to place charles de gaule, go up the arc d' triomphe, from there walk down the champs elysees, keep going til you get the le louvre, from there you are a short walk from notre dame cathedral. from there get a boat up the seine to l'tour eifell

a day aint enough, go back for a weekend!! its one of my favorite cities (if you;ve not guessed!!)

Wot he said , my missus took me for me birthday a few years back for the weekend, I told anyone who would listen 'great Im off to bloody Paris for me birthday' BUT, I can honestly say that Paris is one of the most beatiful cities in the world, Ive been back 4 times in the last 3 yrs  do sacre couer, montmartre, Champs Elysee, Eifel tower is usually packed with long quese to get on it, you wont beleive how tall it is, go up to the trocadero and get some photo,s from there, the louvre is worth a look if you,ve got time but it is huge and you could easily spend a week in there and not see it all, do a seine boat ride, have a bottle of wine in the jardin de luxembourg, sit in a cafe on the champs elysee and watch the world go by, be careful about buying drinks, 19 euro,s for a pint in a jazz club, mmm not nice, have a wander around the sorbonne, cheap beer cos its all students, you will love it mate get yourself a city transit pass as well, covers buses trains trams etc, when you going btw ?

Wot 'e said. And what Ping said

Not to be missed is a trip on the Metro to the Pigale area - different sorts of "artistes" plying their trade ;) and take in a cabaret at la Moulin Rouge.

Notre Dame, Arche de Triomphe, La Defence (esp. the arch building) and if you have time for it, the Sacre Coeur would be my favourites.

Sacre cour as others have said.Pigalle is "Interesting". a pleasant walk down to Les Invalides from the Seine. The view from trocedero down to the Eiffel tower is very good.

For hotels. Very good I recommend The Baltimore on Av Kleber. Cheaper hotels Floride Etoil and Garden Elysee on Rue St Didier, or Hotel Victor Hugo or Hotel du Bois on Rue du Dome. I have stayed in all and can recommend them and very central.

Edit. OK I see you already have a hotel sorted

I went out with a girl who lived in Paris so I know it quite well.. The Louvre is good, got to see the Mona Lisa. A boat trip along the Seine is also a must. Monmatre is a church on the top of a hill in the north of the city which is well worth a visit, lots of steps but it's a nice place to chill out for a bit. The Eiffel tower, Arc de Triomphe and Notre Dame are also worth seeing.

It's not too spread out so you could do all this in a day. Have a good one! :-)

Watching the driving and parking can be good entertainment in itself! They park nose to tail, bumpers touching! The roundabout next to the Arc de Triomphe is fun too, driven across that many times, there aren't any lanes you just head across the the middle with your eyes shut and foot down!!

Ah place d'etoile. It makes the Hanger Lane gyratory into a walk in the park. try doing it on a bike, that is scary.

I fully did Paris about a year ago, here is my honest advice:

Mona Lisa - vastly overrated and not worth queueing for. The rest of the Louvre is marvellous however, but should take at least 2 full days to see it all. Napoleon's appartments are great and the Iranian and Egyption section. Get there early.

Eiffel tower - waaay too long queues again. Lovely to look at from a distance, I'd leave it at that.

I loved the Pantheon. Yes, Paris has a Pantheon too, I never knew! It is HUGE. Go to the top for the best view and in the tombs for the resting places of France's greats (Voltaire, Dumas, Curie etc) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panth%C3%A9on,_Paris

Monmartre and the Sacre Coeur is the nicest place to eat and relax. Only do tourist trap things early in the morning or you will spend your whole day in a queue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_the_Sacr%C3%A9_C%C5%93ur

Garnier Opera house is fantastic. Absolutely beautiful, golden, ornate. See a show that evening maybe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palais_Garnier

Honestly, I vastly prefer the less touristy places. No need to spend money on food, it is all generally way better than England, but booze is surprisingly expensive. Have fun!

Check out the Marais area. Really nice place with tonnes of little cafes and restaurants for dinner.

I also like the Sacre Coeur and the place du tertre (as others have mentioned)

Pere Lachaise is also a great cemetery to have a look at, but probably if you had more time/not going for a romantic weekend

Other than that, you should definitely look at the famous attractions: Eiffel tower, louvre, champs-elysses etc.

Have fun! I love Paris :)

Went up there as schoolkids and one of us had his schoolbag thrown off the top. Never saw it again.
I suppose you can't do that anymore due to health and safety et al.

Just watch out for the jigs at the bottom of the tower, one tries to sell you some crap while another nicks your wallet.
