View Full Version : flip front helmet
this may be jumping the gun a bit. went for interview today to become a CBT instructor. Was told I would need to get a white flip front helmet if I am successful in being selected and if I actually want to go ahead.
anyway I dont want to spend a lot of money as I dont like these helmets and think they look ugly. Plus Im a tight jock and never spend a lot of money on my helmets.
anyone got any experience with any specific brands? dont even mention Shoei lol

JamesUnhill on here has got one..cant remember the make, maybe HJC...think he loves it tho...maybe drop him a pm?
About that make which you don't want mentioned....well I was on the throne an hour ago and reading one of the bike mags (as you do) and was reading a rave review about the Multitec...the guy seemed to love it, not much heavier than standard and felt like a full face lid. Just thought I'd mention it...

Schuberth Concept - very good, had one for several years
Caberg Justissimo - not so good in my humble opinion, but then it's a lot cheaper . . .

My father in law has a Caberg, think it's the Justisimo thingy, he loves it (or did until a cage pulled out in front of him and KILLED his Honda NT650 (DULLVILLE), and has now upgraded to a trip.
have a look at my signature and look at www.msgbikegear.co.uk (http://www.msgbikegear.co.uk)
My mate Mick runs the company, I'm sure if you said Graeme recommended through the Sv.org website he'd do you a good deal !!!!!!!!
If it's only to do you while taking CBT lessons then all you need is something cheap but functional/safety, and my dad in laws Caberg did just that. He was off work for about 3/4 weeks with severe bruising/aches & pains (thankfully nothing more serious), but his bike was a total mess.

Nitro do one, the F347. I have one and used it for about 3 months. It's all shades of rubbish, and heavy. The various vents are laced with about 20 different types of chickenwire, and the flip mechanism will open if you so much as look at it funny. The chin-strap is unreliable, too.
I wouldn't wish that lid upon my worst enemy. All in all, not a good buy. Steer WELL away.

friend of mine uses his justisimo (sp?) to commute to work, then ride around during work all day, then commute home, 6 days a week...
if i were going to get a flip front i'd get one:)
I bought a HJC CL max oct 2006. Worked well but noisy. One of the visor locking springs flew away on Nov 2007. I have to replace the whole hinge mechanism on both sides. Couldn't get the bits until this month sometime so in the meantime I bought a SHOEI Multitech at the NEC. Feels a much better fit than the HJC and much quieter - cost 3X as much though :(
thanks everyone. noise probably wont be an issue as ill not be doing long journeys or anything. its just if I get the job I need it as its part of uniform. most of time will be spent off bike anyway if I remember from my cbt. ill be riding a deauville. had to sit on it yesterday just to make sure I could reach the ground - could - just lol

I wouldn't use anything other than a flip front lid now, they are far more versatile than a full face lid.
I had a Shoei Syncrotec and fell off my bike last April. I was not even aware of banging my head until I saw the state of the helmet, it did its job perfectly.
As a replacement I got the newer Shoei Multitec and find it is quieter, just as comfortable, with an even better peripheral view.
My son has the Caberg Justissimo GT and loves it, espercially as it has the built in dark visor. He reckons it is quieter than his last full face lid as well.

Ive used and abused and crashed Cabergs fro a few years now both normal riding and courier work. I love 'em. The only critisism I have is that theyre heavy and the flip acts like a sail over 50mph.
The new Shark could be worth a look. the flip folds right back but the visor remains at the front IIRC.

Exactly the same as me!!!!!!!
Cost me ?90 & it shows IMO, although it gets a good write up re impact tests.

You think that's bad, you never tried one of Nitro's first attempts at a flip-front. I used to sell them in bulk to dealers, if I sold 20 I got 30 back under warranty.

KK.
The Caberg Justisimo is a decent enough beastie. I have the blue one, Quedos has the gunmetal, and I went out and bought another in white too. Very easy to fit the old autocom kit in too.
There are still a few of the "Old" style ones around at good prices now that the "GT" is out - word is don't even bother with the bluetooth stuff on that one.......
BTW Q's old fella has got the Caberg Trip which is also a flip, but that's much lighter and shorter cut with the shaped visor syle - looks more like a "fighter" type helmet. He loves it and finds it very comfy. That's also the copper creation that BlueFlame sports these days.

I had a Trip - Jester666 has it now. Vixis also has a Trip, but planning on upgrading her to an Arai/Shoei soon
I found the Cabergs to be a bit loose fitting after a VERY short period of time.
But not a bad lid really

Just got back from my holls and spotted this.
Mine's a Nolan N102 Flip Front. As Billy says, I love it, although I don't think it's for everyone. It's a little on the heavy side, but fits me well and I love the flip front as it allows me to flip it up and talk to people without having to take my lid off. The flip lock mechanism's the best one I've tried. I can open it with one gloved hand, but it's impossible to accidentally open it (double stage lock) unlike the Cabergs. The Shoei looks and feels very good, but I couldn't work the flip with my winter gloves on (tried in a shop). I can't commentm on the Shuberts as I haven't tried one.
My Nolan also has an external flip down sun visor which is easily removable for cleaning (unlike the internal ones) and can be replaced with 2 blanking plates to cover it's mechanism.
The Nolan's not to expensive either (I picked mine up for £179).

Sorry if that's bit more info than you wanted, but I like to help.

Shoei Multitech, mine came with clear and dark visors pinlock and the whisper kit not cheap; but I think it's good value.

My blue one's done over 8000M now and is still fine. Sure the flip is slightly looser in movement than the new one, but it's been up and down god knows how often.

Not read the whole thread, but just my quick opinion...
Dads got a HJC C-Max and i'm borrowing it till i get my xr1000. Its an ok fit for me personally, the flip up does work well, but its way too noisy, especially on the motorway. I've had to use earplugs alot wearing it because i'm afraid of damage to my ears. Anyway, for the money id say they are a good deal, but i wouldnt want to wear one all the time....

I have a trip and upgraded to a Justissimo GT - The trip was a lovely fit when I first got it, but within a few months it didnt feel right and seemed to lift at speed - Had the GT for a while now and it's great - The black has a slightly Darth Vader look but the white is pure Stormtrooper!
Dad's got a shoei multitech, not the cheapest out there, but as above you get a tinted visor and a few other bits. Dad loves it, and thats saying something, he usually only ever moans about things :D

I had a Nolan, and it was okay. A bit noisy, but bearable.

I bought myself a Viper RS-V121 the other week, flip front, dark shades, bluetooth. It's the one where you can listen to music and have the phone connected at the same time. It's very noisey at speed, probably down to air leeks around the edges where the visor attaches to the helment (it's recessed), since when I turn my head slightly to either side the whistling stops. I'm hoping to find some way to cure it since I do like the helmet. TBH if the phone rang I'd slow down anyway :-)

i have http://detskehelmy.hu.cz/images/mathisse_sport.jpg
I paid about £100 for it, I've not had any problems but I've not crashed and not really tried a lot of others.
