My son has bought an x box live wireless adaptor and paid the subscription to x box live. Our main pc is downstairs and has a wireless connection, the x box is upstairs and doesn`t seem to be picking up a signal Anyone any ideas on what`s wrong or is there something else we need to buy.

you need to configure your PC as a wireless access point and probably configure internet connection sharing if it connects via an ADSL modem.
might be easier to just get a wireless router/modem.

Mike he says do you mean another wireless router/modem to go in his bedroom??? similar to the one I have for the PC??? he`s bought the wireless network adaptor for the x box

Claire/Chris you shouldn't need another wireless router ... just the one (which is presumably connected to the downstairs PC?). All you SHOULD need to connect the XBox (theoretically) to the wireless router, is a network key.
Who set the wireless router up?
Do you know if the XBox can "see" the wireless router?
Do you have the password to access the router (that's assuming security is ENABLED on the router)?
EDIT: something else to check, if you know how to do it, is to see if the wireless networks "SSID" is being broadcast ... if this is hidden then I don't think the XBox would see the wireless network.

Hi Claire, it might be easier if you just list what you've got set up at the moment?
In theory all you need is one Wireless Router/Modem to run both your PC & Xbox off. Depending if your PC connects to the internet directly or via your Wireless Box, the XBOX needs to be pointed in the same direction if you like.
If you list what you've got I might be able to help a bit more!

We have a wireless router which was set up by the local computer shop... that`s downstairs connected to the main PC. It`s security enabled and i think i can remember the password! He says tho that the wireless network adaptor he`s bought for the xbox isn`t picking up a signal from our broadband internet connection. All i`ve bought him is the network adaptor and the subscription.

Claire, what make of wireless router do you have?
By the sounds of it, if the local computer store has "enabled security" on it, there's a good chance that the wireless router will have been set to NOT broadcast it's ID (the "SSID"). If that's the case, and the XBox "scans" for wireless networks, your wireless network will not be "visible" to the XBox.
If you have a manual for the router, it should detail in there how to change/check this setting. But, you may well have an admin password set up on the router too (to prevent unauthorised changes to the routers settings), so that's yet another password you may need to know ;-)

You see this is why wireless is rubbish....just get wired and be done with it. :)
Better speed/consistency as well.

Valid point actually, and sorry for the slight derail here but ...
Whenever our other PC (wired to wireless router) is downloading movies, or streaming media content off the internet, the wireless side of things just doesn't seem to want to know :(
I've even gone to the extent of investing in some software to control bandwidth utilisation, but the only trouble is ... the server software is installed on my laptop, which connects wirelessly to the network, so if the PC is already using up 100% of the bandwidth I can never get on the network to "reign it back" LOL
I've tried setting up rules in the server software for this stuff, but it still seems pretty much useless ... If I had my way, I'd switch all our PCs to Linux and then I WOULD have full control over the network :smt077 (and all with free/inclusive software that comes as standard with Linux :D)

I could never get the Xbox wireless adapter to work with my homehub. Yet the PS3 works perfectly with it. I now have the PC and Xbox360 wired and the PS3 and Wii wireless, works a treat now. Hope you get somewhere with it.

See there is a lesson to be learned here.
If you buy an X-box live adaper from a guy in a pub in Liverpool, ask him is he has the Wireless router that he also robbed from the house.
Saves time configuring it :)

Well all sorted... lots of buttons pressed and technical type stuff and son is a very happy bunny :D
It means I probably won`t see him from now until he goes back to Aberdeen in a fortnight... i`ll obv take the odd tray of food up every now and again and if i`m lucky i`ll get a grunt in passing!
Also, he can now hook up to the internet via his laptop up there which he didn`t realise he could do (thank god for x box live cos it`ll reduce the amount of porn!!!) and my mouse is fixed.... yay!!!
Many many thanks Pete, you`re a star and all your help has been really appreciated

Well to be honest, I didn't do much really ... just upgraded the routers firmware and asked the X-Box to "look again" for the network - job done :D
... and my mouse is fixed.... yay!!!
It only needed it's ball cleaning (well the rollers actually) - still think you'd be better off getting an optical one though Claire - as David Dickinson would say - "Cheap as chips, they are" :smt023 Plus, you won't have to keep cleaning it like a mechanical mouse, and you won't have the problem of the mouse's ball dropping out

You're welcome :) glad I could help :) and thanks for the natter and the cuppas ;-) :D

I got up at 9 and he`s still there sat in front of the x box, headphones in his ears so`s he didn`t wake me.... he hasn`t been to bed yet!!! Can`t see the attraction myself but hey ho!! I mean where`s the fun in pretending to be a soldier or something and shooting other "soldiers". I suppose it must be better than playing the game by yourself and its clever that you can link up with all these other people all wanting to play the same game but whatever happened to sonic the hedgehog.... he was sweet, and it was fun collecting all those rings..... Do they do Sonic on x box live?? :D

I was up at 6  (actually my eyes didn't look like that tho - more like p*ssholes in the snow)
Sorry Claire ... but if you want, I can create a schedule of "allowed x-box activity" on the router so that he's only able to use x-box live between certain specified times ;-) Hahaha
Speedy Claire
24-01-08, 09:48 AM
Really... is it possible to do that??? I think you`re pulling my leg lol
Nah leave him to it..... he`ll be back to sea soon enough and will have to go without it for a month. He takes his x box with him but he won`t be able to do the "live" thing out there.

Yes it is possible ... there's a section in the router admin panel to "block" certain traffic, and you can actually specify if you want to block that traffic permanently or at certain times of the day/night :)
It's also handy if you have young children who may have a pc in their bedrooms, because you can block their MAC address (that's the computer's network card's unique identifier) say, after 9pm :) so they can't use t'internet after certain times.
It's really useful, but I suspect that most people probably don't use it (or even have a use for it!). Handy to know about tho ;-)
Well as you say, leave him to it ... cause whilst he's shooting virtual soldiers, he won't be watching porn ;-)

Yes, its available through XBOX Live Arcade. 1 and 2 I think.
It is also possible to set up parental timers on the 360. It will shut down after a certain amount of time and can only be unlocked by certain users.
Mind you if he stays on it all night too much it will overheat soon anyways:???:
Pedro68,
You are selling yourself short mate. I go round peoples house and fix what is a relatively simple problem and they look at me like I'm the Messiah and who am I to shatter that illusion...:smt042
