Ok, some of you may have seen my other thread (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=103383) where I confessed to buying a petrol powered RC buggy on a complete impulse

I played with it for the first time today (only got it last night) and here it is (video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTyYDX_33-Q) it's quite nippy for a cheapy! 8) Cool bit of parking at the end even if I do say so myself :takeabow:

Now all I need to do is convince some of my mates to get one too!! :D

Looks pretty quick! What camera are you using?

I did set it up with the bullet cam set-up (http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/blue_sv650s/SUNP0002.jpg) I use on my bike, but as soon as I was ready to start recording, the ruddy battery for the bullet cam went flat!! #-o (it was only a cheapy single 9v, not the normal 8*AAs I use - I know it was only cheap, but I can't believe how little time the 9v lasted!). So I ripped all that rigmarole off again ...

Anyway, so I ended up just using the inbuilt camera/camcorder function of my bullet cam recording device JDX 638 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-0-LCD-2GB-DC-PMP-MP3-MP4-DV-Flash-Player_W0QQitemZ170175551315QQihZ007QQcategoryZ313 88QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247 QQcmdZViewItem) Obviously I normally use the AV-in function for the bullet cam, not its inbuilt cam function as the bullet cam is much higher quality.

The JXD inbuilt camera is not the best quality ever, but hey it worked - and as plan A had gone to rats, I had to move to plan B!! 8)

Unfortunately boys and girls ...

I have very very sad news ... :(

On only its 2nd ever outing (about 30 mins go) ... I lost radio reception or the vibration turned the gear off and it went FLAT out into a high/solid kerb :reaper: .... the front totally folded up bits of metal and plastic everywhere ... RIP little car

Sorry Blue a little giggle sneaked out then. That's pants. I can't believe all those others in the crashy video survived and yours broke after one good knock. Nice parking though. The little beauty is parked in a golden painted parking bay in RC heaven now.

:(

To be fair on it, FLAT OUT (and I mean on flat out!!) so 40odd mph, into a 12" high kerb and 2kg car with all that momentum at 40mph ... bits of plastic aren't going to stand much chance ;)

The ones doing jumps etc had some lateral movement in the fall ... not coming to a dead/abrupt stop like mine did :(

I'll fix her up :) ... but I need parts and the place that sells them is out of stock of the parts I need. I intend to fashion most of the stuff as I just can't get the parts, but the steering bits that obliterated really need to be the proper ones . . .

S'pose. Just been looking up your video set-up AGAIN! Is it a generic 480 line bullet cam you've got? Will a sport cam be the same quality? Have seen the link to the recorder. Nice price! No advantage in getting the next one up either apart from the screen if I'm right. How do you attach yours to the bike?

Sorry to derail.

:)

Its a Sony 1/3" CCD 480 line ... Mine was a 'from china' special, not a top end one, but at the end of the day it is the sensor spec that is important and that cam (at the time) was the same as one twice the price from the uk ...

I now have a 'sport cam' one too, but as of yet that is untested ... I intend to have a forward and rearward facing cam at all times now so will be using that and the original 8)

What cha need for it (once rebuilt) is a fail safe device, cost about £10 ish.

If there's interference (sp?) or signal loss, it cuts in and closes the carb and applies the brake.

I can't see the vis at work. what car is (was) it?

I did the exact same thing a couple of years ago, spent a fortune buying bits for it (fortune = full titanium chassis and shock towers, bigger engine, exhaust, filters.....................)

It's now sat in the shed looking sorry for itself needing a new clutch. We usually take 'em for evening entertainment at race metings (and to see how many of the little sprogs we can mow down).

Nope, they don't.

Looking back, I don't think I explained what happened ...

Basically I sideswiped one kerb (was trying to adjust transmitter and when I looked up it was further away than I expected), that I presume dislodged the batteries and it then was on full throttle and shot at full speed across the car park into a high kerb at the other end!!! BANG

Ok peeps, managed to find a place (http://www.blacksmithproducts.co.uk)that stocks the parts I NEED, I am taking a bit of a risk as it is not actually my car they list, but the one they do looks the same and its too coincidental all the part numbers match ;) … so assume it is the same thing just re-badged 8)

There are more bits broken, but I can either get away with them or fashion them myself … but I am not ?33 lighter*, but should have all the bits I need to rebuild her 8)

Assuming these parts fit and I haven’t just wasted ?33, she will live again!!! :)

*?33 isn’t a lot of money these days (i spend more than that every time I go to the supermarket or fill the car/van up!), but it was hard to spend that much on what was just a few spares for a ?94 car … it was a close run thing to abandon it! ;)

Try ebay for parts (i used to use an ebay shop called RCboys) and i also used to import from Tower Hobbies in the states. Now you have a chance to upgrade to stronger parts so do some research or join a web forum that specialize in your car

hehe, as I am sure you are aware, I simply stopped off to play on the way home silly ;)

As for the plug thing, that is there to 'heat' the glow plug. Its a bit like a diesel car needs a glow pre-heat to start it, then the heat from combustion keeps it glowing form there on 8)

It takes/taken a fair bashing, some of the flips and rolls and cartwheels its done when hitting larger stones/rocks etc have been most impressive and the thing just drives on!! 8) But it certainly doesn't like bashing into solid objects head on at full chat!! :( Coming to that sudden stop - with the engine still driving hard to boot - That is what has killed it both times, what is most annoying is that both times its been terminated it was due to battery connection problems! http://planetsmilies.net/angry-smiley-1497.gif

Reckon you need to find a new hobby. Either that or make the battery terminals a bit more reliable!

To be fair, I had actually put some tape on that exact connector as it was a bit dodgy ... but it was very cold and the tape didn't stick that well ... i think with a bit of burning about and probably a bit of fuel spraying about it had worked free ... allowing what happened to happen :( .. most annoying of all is that I was on my way home when it happened (and actually driving it on the road!! :D) ... had it happened down the dirt track I had just been, then it'd have just gone off into a bush/foliage and perhaps flipped upside down and conked out (or whatever, not an abrupt end) ... unfortunately as I said, I was on the road, so it hit a kerb AGAIN  (and no, its a little used road so there weren't any cars about!!) .. I was about 10 meters away from where I was going to stop it and pack it away, I would have seen the lost tape when I got home and undid/cleaned it ... sods law that ... :(

The only ones I know of are like has been mentioned before, i.e. when you have lost signal, if you lose power, you are still fecked!! ;) I could always put a massive spring on the throttle .. not sure the servo would like fighting that in operation though!! :D

monkey
24-02-08, 09:50 PM
If there's voltage on a particular connector when the radio's talking and then it goes when it's not could you wire in a relay so that when the power goes it cuts power to the drive? (Haven't got a clue about the insides of these).

You need to 'power' the throttle servo closed (little motor inside with gears) else it is left stuck on the last throttle setting (generally fully open ;)) ...

Not really ... it was the same with my old RC planes ... I remember I accidentally caught the on/off switch on the side of one of my planes hand launching it once … much to my friends amusement seeing me running after this aeroplane on full chat holding the transmitter higher at it (like that was going to make any difference) …

Needless to say I caught up with the plane in the end …

I had to go back to the pits for the bin-bag to bring it back mind!! :D

Let me rephrase it:

That's bloody stupid! What a terible way to design them. Good for the industry though I suppose.

Is there onle one little battery in there Blue to power the servo doobries and the radio stuff?

Yes.

The only way I can see of doing it without getting overly complex or expensive is to use some sort of electro magnet device with variable power input to move the throttle. With it sprung SHUT obviously. That way you lose power, it returns to shut, not stays where it is!! ;)

Ok, so I broke it again and couldn’t justify spending any more cash on it bearing in mind I had already spent over 1/3 of the NEW price fixing it last time ..

So I had 2 choices - the bin or bodge city …

I had nothing to lose by paying a visit to bodge city, so that is exactly what I did ..

I redesigned the steering/servo setup so it didn’t use the ‘crank’ mechanism that has proven so fragile (and expensive). Its now almost directly off the servo - this meant relocating the servo. Which meant that the front gearbox/diff had to go (didn’t matter anyway as it was mangled). So my 4WD car became a 2WD car …

I also used a fuel tank from my old RC aeroplane days as the replacement ‘proper’ one I bought for the car got obliterated in the last crash ..

I also cut up a bit of alli plate and did a drill and bolt job to fix the broken upper chassis plate …

Lots of duck-tape on the bodyshell and I am away!! :)

Gave it its first test this AM, but had a few teething problems (like the steering came a bit loose and I went though a puddle (receiver didn’t like that ). Its all dried out and all works again now mind!! :)

I’ll tighten the steering up at lunchtime and then give it another crack after work 8)

So she lives!! 8) {Frankenstein voice on} “What have I created”??? :D
