View Full Version : Metzeler Rennsport, road compound
Any good? There's a place locally offering them for £130 a pair in 120/60-17 and 160/60-17. He says they are 'road compound'. How do they compare to other road tyres like Pilot Powers or BT012s?
These are for another SV I've found that needs tyres. I might consider putting this one on track as well, so track performance info would be appreciated please.

had a pair on an SV in 2004, one trackday & 1850 and the rear was histroy, but better tyres than I needed that's for sure, heat up really quickly and give good feedback, I liked them although at that sort of ware rate a luxury you can't afford when doing 50,000 miles a year.

Any idea how they compare to a Dunlop 208 RR?
Just want some cheap sticky road & track day rubber (life not a major issue) and can't decide.

Brand new K2 retired for the road mid Feb 2005 (that's a little over 2 years 4 months) total mileage 153,000 or there abouts, parked it up,although still mine my niece is currently rebuilding it for her first bike this summer, so it'll be back.

So anyway, Rennsports. I have a set in my shed, which I got for trackdays just before I had to stop doing trackdays, and they certainly look sticky ;) They're kind of old tech now but from what I've read they're still not really outclassed as far as grip goes, just that the modern tyres that grip just as well last far better.
If anyone wants a 120/70, 180/55 pair they're yours for ?120 delivered btw ;)

I have a front ROAD supercorsa (exactly the same as rennsport), that I used for a bit and will put back in for the spring (got a conti in there at the mo) I love their track compund tyres and nothing bad to say about the road one (on the road) eiter!! 8)
I think wear rates might be your only issue, but if you don't do silly miles who cares?!?! :)

for you perhaps, but obviously not for me, but then again if it's normal for you to limit the bike mileage you do, I can understand how you could think like that.
Seems these days there are far more people with motorbikes in the garage that out on the road.

Nope, I A: don't count them and B: swap wheels/tyres all the time, so never really wear one start to finish .. and finally C: ALL my tyres are 2nd hand ;)
I have run road 207s (not their RRs) I liked them, but they did wear fast!! ;)

You liked D207s...they are the worst tyres I have ever fitted to any motorcycle - they didn't inspire confidence at all. I liked the D207RRs though.

The even older D204 was a horrid tyre, but I liked the D207s in their day ... the 207RRs were exactly the same as the 207s, just with stiffer walls weren't they?!? :|

Ah right, remember there was some combination of compound and carcass across the 3 models. To be honest I can't remember if it was the 207 or 207GPs I was running on the road, we are talking what 8-9 years ago now! deffo NOT the RRs though, I remember that much! ;)
I also remember they lasted <1k road miles, so prolly the GPs ;)

The road compound... Chose those over track as they're supposed to be less sensitive to heat cycling, and I wouldn't have tyre warmers... Also, I rode to and from trackdays so the streetier the better :D

The SC Pros (again exactly the same as rennsports) in track compound actually work pretty well on the road - even from cold and in the wet - too!! 8) ... but if you are buying new, it deffo makes more sense to get the proper road ones!! ;)

1000 road miles ( mainly dual carriageway) and then roughly 16 to 30 laps of the Nordschleife at 12.5 a pop, so maybe up to 1375 miles.

You won't be using any significant amounts of middle tyre round the ring, so we are only really talking about the 1000 miles round trip ....
I'm gonna stick my neck out and bearing in mind if they are x-race part-worns, they will be 'as new' in the middle when you start off, I'm gonna say I think you would get away with it!!
I have used my partworn cast-off 'corsas on my roadbike and they have lasted a fair few miles (commuting) .... never logged it, but 1000 doesn't sound that infeasible ... probably a few more?!?! ...

Just ordered a set of rennsport roads, just over 120 quid delivered, sweet :)
Just had a set of these put on the bike. £160 pair roll in/out. Track days coming up so thought I'd get something sticky. Had Z6's but after a torrent of abuse at the track like 'they look agricultural' and 'they're a bit shiny' I lost confidence in them for trackdays at least. Awesome on the road though. Only put 20 miles on them so not scrubbed in yet. They seem to roll pretty nice but I could be comparing them to the squared off Z6's.
Will let you know how I get on with them. Reading the posts on the wear rate something tells me I'll be buying tyres again before the summer is out!!

Let us know how they perform on track Ryan, how long to the gsxr track day?
. This year I'm having to come up with a tyre strategy to fit in trips & trackdays with tyres, all I need now is a part worn set to take me to the end of June...it's like running my own race team (ok, I'm getting carried away now...)

Ignore them. I did a trackday at Mallory with Avon Azaro 3 AV45/46 Sports/Touring tyres on a knackered Bandit 600 and was lapping half the novice field, the tyres never gave a moment's problems.
This what the rear looked like after two sessions.

Next Friday - 29th and can't wait. I'm not counting my chickens on them lasting too long but thought what the hell, worth a try. Got a trip to NW200 in May so if they see it through I'll be a happy man.
Got to say, I do like the look of the really thick 'slick' band at the edges..Watch this space.

I love doing trackdays on "inappropriate" tyres, you don't have the safety margin (ie, you can't just slam it into corners like an idiot and rely on your ludicrously sticky tyres) but you can still make really good pace. Plus, the paddock chat is great... One time the weather was a bit nasty, everyone else in the pits was "Have you got wets to put on?" "No, but I do have heated grips!"
But still, if I do any this year I'll stick something sticky on it.

they stick to the road like glue in the wet, not been on a track myself, but I got them on Suze, they don't make them anymore...well i don't think so.....they've been replaced by the Storms...which incidently i have on the black bike, and they do exactly the same.....stick
They were the best road tyres I have ever used on a bike up to 600cc. They stuck like smelly stuff to a blanket in all weathers and lasted forever. First session at Mallory it was howling down with rain, and the Bandit was passing much bigger bikes around the outside at Gerards without feeling like it would ever let go.

They certainly look like they would do the job in the wet, so I can believe that!! 8)
But then using 'round the outside in the wet' as a measure, I could give the same testament to the track compound supercorsas (which don't look like they will be up to much in the wet with minimal tread that ends about 2/3 way across the tyre (http://www.motormike.nl/images/motorbanden/Pirelli%20Supercorsa%20120&180-1%20gebruikt%20website.jpg)) ... the heavens opened at Cadders and I had my dry tyres on ... not enough time to change tyres, so thought feck it and went out on them as the only other alternative was not to go out ... like I am ever going to chose that option!! :D
The only other punters that went out you see at ~40s into this vid (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=S336ZXmwJ6Q) ... its safe to say they were being a bit cautious!! :smt003 I'd say unless you have racers out there on full wets, the average pace in the wet is gonna be pretty steady! No one wants to drop their bike, so why push it in the wet when a dry session might be coming along soon, that makes sense to me!?!?! :)

Just ordered another 3 Rennsport Roads (2F, 1R), so I've a stock of six tyres (5new and one barely scrubbed) to get me through this season, bring on the warm summer days and evenings.
As promised - What I think of the Rennsports.
Awesome - Had a trackday today at Donnington with the Gixxer Junkies (no I haven't defected). The moring sessions were very slippy indeed. It was bucketing down with rain and the track was completely waterlogged. Really separated the men from the boys, or rather those who were running racing wets from those that weren't! Anyway back to the point....In the wet the Rennsports were far better than I expected them to be. I was very concious of the 1.5inch slick sections on the edge but I was managing to keep up with the GSX's in the bends. I think a lot of them guys were opting for Battlax 014's and Corsa 3's. Obviously it's a different story trying the get the power down on a GSX 1000 but they weren't getting away from me.
Opening up from 2nd into 3rd coming out of coppice saw the bend end swinging out like mad light up in a straight line as I cracked open the throttle into 3rd. Although it was very slow going it really was a lot of fun and I reckon I learnt a hell of a lot doing a trackday in the rain.
Now for the good bit - After lunch it dried up, slowly but surely. The last 2 sessions were totally dry. The Rennsports were fantastic. The bike didn't flinch at all and I was touching L & R pegs down! They really instill confidence after just 1 lap. They seem to heat up really quick. The profile is very different to my previous Z6's and they roll into turns really nice with no effort at all. Even with knees and pegs down there's a good 0.5inch chicken strip left either side of the rear although no strips left on the front. The wear has gone right off the edge.
Motoways miles on the way home from Donnington to Leeds, mostly in the rain!! Tut. Again, a lot better than I thought. No problems over cats eyes or white lines to report.
The big question - Would I buy them agian??? To be frank...NO. Although I do rate them highly my Z6's win. Miles (like 5000!) better tyre life, better in the wet and good enough for me on track. I reckon these are for the track only - Can't beat the price though!!
Might try 2CT's next time. I've probably only got a month to wait :(

Yeah, screwed the tyre strategy up a little, got some more in the garage so no worries, fitting a new one for Croft (will do 50-100 miles road scrub in first). Then will remove it and fit another new one for my Nurburgring trip, luckily it's only 300 ish miles from home in Yorkshire to the Ring, bash the Ring, get home then hopefully eek a track day out of it 3 days later, before fitting the part worn from the first croft experience. May be some slightly less silly rubber would have been a better bet in logistical terms, but I'm having fun and that's all that matters.
Hey Tim - ditto ditto ditto. After having round 600 miles on the Rennsports I went to the NW200 a few weeks ago. Rode from Leeds up to Stranragh to get the ferry to Belfast - Couldn't believe it, the rear looked like it had squared off after 270 (870 total) miles. Oddly the curvy roads of norther ireland seemed to 'unsquare'them - Then the same on my way home. I've done around 1200 miles on them now. They aren't too bad just got a nasty square patch. Totally cocked up the tyre strategy too. I have two evening trackdays booked at Donni and Cadwell coming up. I'll see how they fair at Donni and may swap for something with a bid more longevity. After reading last months BIKE I may go for some Diablo Strada's.
Agree they are quality though and a lot of fun. You been out and had them sliding in the wet then yet?....Easy on the throttle there tiger....

Ryan, I agree that it squares off quick on straight runs, did about 100 miles on dual carriageways, and another upright run to York down the A19. Haven't used them in the wet yet, being a fair weather fairy and all!
The Stradas are great, I used to use them and have done plenty of trackdays on them, they bobbled/snotted up nicely on their edges :) and got about 4-4.5k out of a rear including trackdays, touring, blatting etc.. Just fancied trying some sticky stuff to see if there is a difference, 1 rear down, 3 to go :)
Cheers Tim, thanks for the info on the Stradas. I think it's help make my mind up.
