And seeing as though Dave is a pretty high standard shes got a whole long way to go yet

shes been used every winter since she was bought new. Im Indoors didn't look after her very well and i stole her off him. She was supposed to have a full rebuild last Feb but my mechanic was knocked off a customers bike and sustained some pretty nasty injuries....he still is on hand to give advice, but can't work on a bike for the forseeable future so Yorkiechris stepped forward

Hasten to add Im Indoors has nearly finished our SRX600 rebuild and it should be on the road so we can pull both the Raptor and Dave out of the winter loop....not that I let Dave out of the shed in the wet anyway. Suzy is on schedule to be finished before i MOT her in April...

She may be only worth scrap, but to me shes worth a fortune in sentimental value, and she was the first brand new bike Im Indoors bought with the compo from his first big accident......I wouldn't sell her for the world, and for all the rust shes got, she still rips yer arms off on a ride and pulls like a train

Stig

I know what you mean about sentimental value only. Mine isn't worth a bean but we have history. Never been sentimental about a bike before but I am with this one.

For all the shine that the black bike has, it ain't got a spot on her. As soon as i get on I enjoy every minute warts and all. She has a whole load more guts than the black bke......and roars louder too

they're far from finished, they got a few lumpy bits I can't get rid of...nitromorse wasn't tough enough, spent all day yesterday, scrubbing and polishing, to get half way there. Haven't got a bench grinder like you, and i want to say to everyone when they're done that I did them rather than cheating and getting a polish shop to do it.

i keep comparing them to my other Sv but they ain't shiny enough yet, and i haven't even got to the wheel rims yet. thats after i attack the front subframe with dome potent rust stuff. I cheated with the rear and bought another one:lol:

thats pretty much what my K1 looks like after 36K and a few salty winters, apart from my chain and rear shock are now where near as bad as your are !!!

( only because it had new chain and sprocket and a 2nd hand OEM rear shock fitted a while back )

Surface rust and dirt doesnt really bother me on the SV, I'd rather ride my bikes than spend time polishing the hell out of them, but fair play to you if you're gonna do it, do it properly.

dizzyblonde
29-01-08, 10:19 PM
ok so the forks in the previous photo were nitromorsed and autosol'd, but the finish wasn't a spot on my othr Sv so we decided (as I don't have bench grinders n stuff) to do it the hard way. with a boat load of wet n dry, elbow grease and autosol, the fork on the left of this photo is the final result.

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/2008_01290001.jpg

bearing in mind that the bottoms of these forks are soooo bad anything is an improvement. The one on the right is getting saved til tomorrow to finish. Its already half way there but me fingers are really sore. I did this one all by my self and as Lissa says polishing is very satisfying. The one on the right was started by chris so theres not as much to do

yorkie_chris
29-01-08, 10:24 PM
Cool

Main conclusion, 240 grit is way too fine for getting pits and cast-in roughness off the forks

dizzyblonde
29-01-08, 10:27 PM
some of the pits are sooo deep you lose your bike in em

Lissa
29-01-08, 10:28 PM
Looking really good, Dizzy. You must be pleased:D

I did the forks on our first SV the hard way................Nitromors, wet and dry and Autosol...................and with them still on the bike too:rolleyes: That was a challenge:D

The polishing wheel just speeded the whole process up the second time............and didn't make my fingers as sore. I still had to do the Nitromors bit though:D

dizzyblonde
29-01-08, 10:32 PM
think I must have had my polishing head on today, it started with polishing the other SV this morning.I got some brush on rust thing for the front subframe yesterday, painted that on this aft an wadooyaknow, it disappeared. so now i can tackle repainting that. Then I've spent a few hours doing the forks...so a good productive day....just shows you what an arguement with your employer will do...lol

originally i had a goal which my good friend Pat planted in my brain....a picture of a yellow sv in a streetfighter back issue....the frame were polished, swingarm, forks...everything but the yellow bits...then I decided it would be waaaaaaay too much bling, so i am trying for the modest approach instead, and adding more yellow instead:cheers:with the bellypan and hugger and cowl. mmmmmmmmmm yellow

Polishing's a disease. Unfortunately it's a disease that can only be cured by more polishing. But on the plus side, once you polish a part you have to do it again, and again, and again, so you'll never run out :smt003

yorkie_chris
06-02-08, 10:59 AM
Good stuff, that.

It's mainly a repair job now, the engine's going to have to come out so as we can treat the underside of it for corrosion, as its well manky. Then it'll need re-lacquering.

First it needs a front-end putting back on.

Once more into the breach anyway, I'm off down the garage to rebuild the brakes.

jambo
06-02-08, 01:54 PM
Holy crud!

I say this as someone that goes 10 months without cleaning a bike. I have never seen that much rust on an SV. Anyone would have told you which parts were steel and which were alloy, storing it in a salt water tank was not entirely necessary.

Best of luck with the rebuild!

Jambo

yorkie_chris

storing it in a salt water tank was not entirely necessary.

Rear caliper pins, or the bolts refuse to move, despite filling the little cavity behind the bolt with penetrant oil for a week.

Lovely.

Indeed Dave is still being pampered. We found the carbs arms were knackered on it , tis why it wouldn't run right at the AR. It got a damn good wash and polish last week, only to be ruined the day after, but it got a good blast with Fs365 afterwards, it'll probably get yet another wash tomorrow. Thing is its easier to clean a claen bike than a rusty manky one, because you know where to begin...I only hope that Suze will be half as nice lookin as Dave when she's finished, so she'll be easier to do.

chris went to put the new shock on today only to find that after nearly a year of being stored under the bed, that, its the wrong one. Luckily Wemoto have been nice enough to admit they probably didn't notice, have ordered another from Hagon and will get the courier to send it straight to me and pick the other one up at the same time. fingers crossed......i wasn't best happy.

Pics of my scrubbed front sub coming up, not so rusty now, but off to powdercoaters next week, along with the rear one and the spare I picked up, just in case they bead blast holes in it:(

Fingers crossed Suze will be making an appearance at the AR this year

right this is odd stuff.barkeepers friend-asda £1.94.its a powder, you can either apply onto a wet cloth and rub( if its slightly tarnished) or turn it into a paste like substance similar to a toothpaste consistancy( trial and error). I did the paste way and let it sit on it for a while and kept rubbing it with green pads, washed it off thouroughly and then give it the autosol.

bearing in mind my pipes looked like this

after faffing with this stuff...a little messy but i'm obsessed at the moment, it starts 'bleeding' brown stains, scrub a dub dub and it goes a not so very shiny this---

wash it all off and dry it for this

then autosol to this

1 caliper down, 2 to go.

The first one was a complete t###.

I told you banging it with a hammer instead of servicing it wasn't a good idea.

Both front calipers are now rebuilt, seals were fine, but it literally looked like the seal cavities had been filled with chalk.

120psi to pop them out, that's a personal record! :-P

Shock and linkages etc. are back in, As is the exhaust, with copperslipped stainless studs this time. Maybe next time the system needs to move then they'll come off!

The polished forks look lovely, and now have hagon springs and 15w oil

Subframes back from the powdercoaters on monday hopefully

they appeared to be filled with some chalk like substance that required some large amounts of brute force, including 120 psi of compressed air......or summat like that

the rusty subframe is no more, a nice shade of shiny black powdercoat. I used the spare one that I had done at the same time, because this one has a lot of pitting, but it will come in handy because the one on the black one needs doing too eventually
