So who's your favourate survival expert out of the afformentioned & why?

Is it the more serious style of Ray that tends to focus on traditions & cultures..

..or the more the more fun, action man Bear?

Bear does my head in. He's a pretender.

Ray Mears of course, he often stays in the new forest

Bear Grylls is a fraud isn't he, wasn't he staying in hotels or something like that when making his survival program? can't remember where i herd it now

Ray Mears. He's never failed to start a fire (Bear Grylls in Ecuador tonight couldn't get a fire started in the rain); and most importantly, Ray Mears eats tree bark and stuff he catches, and he's a big guy... he must be doing something right!

If I was stranded on a deserted island, I'd want three things: 1) a well-stocked boat, 2) a hot chick w/big boobs, and 3) Ray Mears. :):)

Bear Grylls was in the SAS and thats enough for me to rate him. Certainly not a pretender.

IMO Ray Mears comes across as a **** and whilst he might be useful on a desert island, i would probably eat him before long, just to be rid of him.

Definitely Ray Mears, saw him live, top bloke :)

Ray. The other one has got the most stoopidest name I have ever heard. And if it's a false name then it's even more stoopid.

Hey Jamie, no offence man.

Yeah, Bear Grylls - sounds like some mechanically reclaimed meat product from Iceland (the shop, not the place).

Maybe has some mates called King Rib and Chick Nugget ?

Voted Ray as there was no Bush Tucker Man option.

3 things wrong with that....

1) If you have a well-stocked boat you are not stranded

2) If you have a well-stocked boat you dont need Ray Mears

3) The Hot chick would probably pick Ray over you

This would however mean that once you got fed up of listening to the Chick and Ray getting it on, you could get on your boat and sail home, safe in the knowledge that once Ray has had enough of the Chick, he could get them both safely home, and probably faster than you with your boat, even if it took a couple of weeks for them to get bored with each other.

Now, decision time - do we need a Ray Mears vs Chuck Norris thread ????

Bear every time people!

Has anyone read his books, I've got most of them and it makes for fantastic reading.

Originally he was a member of the SAS and broke his back during a parachute accident. Told he would never walk again, he beat the odds and trained to climb Everest a year or so later. That people is Balls of Steel.

He has adventure in his blood! He has Jet Skied the entire coast of England and Ribbed the Artic circle.

The man is a legend. As for survival he has the cutting edge over Ray anyday. And why is Ray so big if he does survival all the time. Too much time in the pub eating pies me thinks ;-)

I don't doubt all that you wrote but he still has a stoopid name.

Ray wins hands down. He does it all with no efford. Looks easy when you watch him.

Ray wittles a basket to keep food in and makes a spit for a hog roast he has just caught ( been supplied by the production team )
In a survival situation its all very well making pots and stuff but its not gonna get you rescued.

Bear however shows what you can do/eat/use to aid in survival should you find yourself lost in the wilderness.

How many times do you see Ray eat live bugs, eat rotting camel flesh and drink water from elephant dung or camel intestines to stay alive?

I believe there is also small print that says some of the things that Bear does are also staged specifically for the show. It's just a big dramatisation for the camera.

Yeah I remember reading about somebody kicking off saying it was all fake.
They came back and said they never said the whole thing was real because Health and Safety wouldn't allow it.

Instead that it was just a guide to show people how to cope if they found themselves in that environment.

Oh and how many languages can that man speak? I lost count!

Obviously Ray - he IS a survival expert. Whereas if you look at the end credits on a Bear show there's always a "survival expert" credited.

there is a diff, Bear could probably survive under real life escape and evesiaon type survival where i doubt Ray could . Ray is more of a bush tucker type.

Bear does the howle hardcore side of survival. i know which one i would rather be with ifthe sh*t hit the fan!!

I prefer ray i think. I've seen more of his stuff, and he seems to know alot, like what plants have medicinal qualities. Although if I wanted to get somewhere really quick, i might go with Bear (not our bear, the TV bear...although I like to think our bear would help me get home if i really needed to)

Aye the 2 are probably a little different. Ray is deifinitely more bush tucker man, but Bear has the entertainment factor a little more I think.

I read Bears book around 10 years ago (youngest Everest climber at the time if i recall) and was fascinated by it. Definitely someone who has lived life to the maximum.

Mears all the way. Grylls is just a mere (can you see what I did there?) pretender to the crown.

Ray all the way for me..!

The few shows Ive watched, Rays skills and tips seem much more realistic survival wise. Bear seems rather fake and over the top. Who on earth would stand in the middle of the arctic naked and pat themselves "dry" with snow? Bear it seems...

I think you'll find "Bear" isn't his real name. Can't be a*sed to look it up on Wiki but its something normal like Dave.

Although he attempted selection for the SAS it was TA SAS and not Regular. Also, I think you'll find his broken back was sustained during a recreational jump, not operational. I'm not knocking his achievements since all this mind you. He is pretty good at what he does.

Having said all that, I prefer to watch Ray Mears. Its just more believable.

As with any reality tv show (xfactorferinstance), it is entertainment they are providing... I personally Bear Grylls more entertaining - Ray Mears is dour and takes himself too seriously ;)

Ray Mears is a bit too fat to be a survival expert don't you think? I always reckon just off camera he has a mobile McDonalds that follows him where ever he goes :)

That said Ray is still my favourite.

ray enjoys living in a bush. hes a gentleman and will invite you round to his bivouac for a 3 course meal and educated conversation

bear is a sweaty ruffian who just about survives on cold wriggly fishies

but how can you tell whos the better survival expert? simple. which ones fatter?

I dont know... Ray has more of the factual take you through things which is very interesting. But Bear is just sooo mad (at least it appears that way) and is liturally in the middle of it all. :)

And there you have it, Bear is there for the entertainment factor whereas Ray actually gives a damn and you feel you've learnt something from having watched one of his programmes or read one of his books. The only thing you'll learn from bear is that learning raw fish tastes rank (I'm not a fan of sushi either) and large animals shouldn't be toyed with which is common sense really

How tough is Bear Gryll's camera man? He does everything bear does and manages to film it at the same time!
