Just rediscovered sardines on toast, a nice combination but something I hated as a kid. Are there any other lunch time snacks that I may have forgotten about and am missing out on?
I have also just started eating sardines on toast again...........doctors orders!
My cholesterol level is a little high, so oily fish is the order of the day. I'd forgotten how nice they are with a liberal dousing of vinegar:D

Mmmm fish. I love fish :D
If you guys like sardines try the little rectangular tins they come in (i think the brand is Princess) as they do them in diffrent sauces. I'm not usualy a fan of tinned, flavoured fish but these are absolutley yummy.
have em on toast if thats your thing but i usually just make a small salad and throw a tin of these on it. I love the ones in a spicy tonatoe sauce.
:( Just went to look in the cupboard as i made myself hungery typing this and only got one can left anf its just sardined in oil...but hey they'll do! :D

hmmmm yum yum, i wish the shops were open now.... i could just eat some fresh sardines. Mix up some olive oil, balsamic vinegar, couple of cloves of garlic, some fresh lemon juice, fresh lime juice and a bit of brown sugar... marinade the sardines for a few hours and then slap on the grill or barbeque :D
PS: Read the above as in manner of Nigella Lawson and look meaningfully and seductively to the camera just as she does

I've been eating sardines in tomato sauce and mixing it with salad for lunch at work.
The Glenryk (think that's how you spell it) brand taste far better than the John West brand and contain much less fat. As for the Asda brand - well they're rubbish!
because they are in tins, i put a few in my locker at work, but they have been there around 6 months do they go off ?
and how can u tell if they are off? smell not included cos i hate the smell but the doctor said i must.. :(

date is jan 2010....
i'm asking cos its warm / hot / cold at various tems in that locker,
would the temp make any difference to the taste.
do i eat it cold ?
do i eat it hot, if so how hot slight simmer or full blown hot. :smt104

I'm sure they'll be fine in that case mate. Can you imagine how much variation in temp they go thru after being tinned? Think about the transport to get the to the shop, the shops own storgae areas, the temp variations overnight when the shop is shut etc.
Your locker cant be that much different.
Ive never had them hot out the tin or heated tham at all come to think of it...just cold is great.
And Speedy Claire...put my name on the list for yuo summer barbie and make some of those and i'll be there ;)
Sounds yummy!

Sardine man too, me! Tinned plain ones in olive oil are my usual lunchtime snack, on toasted wholemeal. Lurvely. I must get through 5 or 6 tins a week. The family complain... ;-)

+1 definitely. or tuna and cheese! Hot or cold. Although should be hot really so the cheese can melt properly and go all stringy :D
I'm not a great fan of sardines, once had them on toast and they weren't too bad but then I bought meself another tin and they were sat in my cupboard for months . Shame, 'cos I know they're really good for me...maybe I could get used to them eventually.

I think it's just the idea of eating a whole fish, head/brain/guts/tits/lips etc - the lot, that puts me off them.
Same with Whitebait, I just cant get my head (or gag-reflex) round that.

The sardines I buy are already gutted and there`s no head/brain/guts/lips/tits else I wouldn`t be able to eat them either!

Mussels is what I meant ... not muscles  LOL
Sardines on toast ALWAYS good - but I draw the line at putting tomato sauce with them ewwww. Oily fish in oil is the best :). The bones are nice and crunchable too, when they've been in oil..
Anyone remember sugar sandwiches? (although I wouldnt recommend them for adult metabolisms *sic*).
Any seafood is aok with me (whitebait is good with only a touch of flour) - except tuna. You couldnt get me to eat that stuff if you paid me. Squid, Octopus and king prawns are my favourite....and the cat loves seafood breath. Not sure about hubby though.

I'm a fan of eggy bread (french toast??) which is then rubbed in a plate of sugar before having golden syrup spread on top. A nice sugar rush to start the day with.
