Ebay query

I rarely buy stuff on ebay, and haven't for a while now, although I did bid (unsuccessfully) on something a few weeks back.

So I was surprised to get an email saying that I'd been outbid on something - a Nokia phone in fact, priced in $.

Scam? It's things like this that put me off ebay.

Report it to ebay, you won't get any update on it once you have though.

If the item you bid on was that nokia phone then ebay would send out an email to let you know that you were no longer the highest bidder for the item you were bidding for. i.e. so you could go back, bid more, then ebay would take more profit from the final sale value of that item.


I use ebay & paypal but feel completely used by their exorbatent(sic?) pricing structure.

Yup its a Phishing scam. Bad guy sends out an email saying you've been outbid on something (anything), so you click on the (looks OK but bogus) link in the email, which takes you to an ebay style page which asks you for you username and password. And hey presto, bad guy has access to you ebay account.

If your worried, log in to Ebay (not clicking on the email link, obviously) and check out your bid history.

Oh yeah, just to add, it's not really an Ebay issue as such, this scam falls into the same category as the Ebanking emails people get telling them to update their security details by clicking on the helpful link. Ebay is just an easy front to use cause it's so big.

Thank you peeps!! Dirk, I didn't bid for the phone. I've sent the email to ebay, and I've changed my password and secret question. Bidding history is clear so all seems OK. I don't use ebay much so not greatly familiar with all the routines.
