My fridge freezer has not been plugged in since I moved, they said wait a week after moving it, its been almost a year.. Only fired it up so I can defrost the built in one in the kitchen.
Anyway, the lights / knobs all work but no whirry sounds and no cold. Any tricks to try before figuring out how to get it to the dump? I've heard of standing them upside down - but maybe an urban myth.

Yup - but guessing I reckon its a gas/coolant type of problem, so the compressor wont kick in. Dunno if they leak their coolant when left standing for such a long time, or maybe its all moved 'down one end of the pipe'

How long have you left it turned on - it might take it a while before everything kicks in. I'd leave it plugged in overnight

Only a couple of hours - I'll leave it a while as you suggest

Also put the internal control knob to maximum setting. If it is going to kick in will most likely do it with highest cooling demand setting.

I shall stick with my current run of useful advice...

... hit it with a hammer. ;)

well... After 6 hours or so of nothing, I shook it violently, slammed the doors a lot, tried my favourite swear words on it, then turned it on and off rapidly many times like a true engineer. Finally; click, whirr, GURRRRRRRRRRRRGLE.

I can fix things me.

"Percussive maintenence" works a charm.

thats actually a serious suggestion, the compressors can some time need a "kick Start".....

I always favour the hit it with a hammer kind of mechanics/engineering, and if that doesn't work, then I trundle off to find a bigger hammer!!!

Wow - I knew by sticking with that piece of sage advice as the answer to all problems would pay off in success eventually! ;)
