This scheme is still in its infancy(i'm thinking out loud really) and no dates or anything like that have been considered......
However i have been thinking about offering a rideout that will probably last 1/2 nights, in Southern Brittany. We would be based near Josselin, which is about midway between Rennes and Lorient. We can use one of my parents houses as a base and then go exploring from there.
To get there we would have the option of the ports at St Malo/Roscoff which are about 2 hours away, or 4 hours from Caen/Cherbourg. The trade off is that the closer ports are usually a lot more expensive to use, especially during the summer/tourist season.
The genuine budget option is to come over at Calais, which is always cheap as chips, but then the distance to travel is a lot greater.
Basically this is an opportunity to explore a bit of France that you wouldn't normally get to see on a day trip across the channel.
When i sober up in the morning i may change my mind, but is there any provisional interest? :riding:

Ferry crossing is the main expense. I will do some recon on prices although they do vary drastically for no particular reason!

what provission do they have on ferrys to tie the bikes down? the majority of us will only have side stands, and it would be a pitty to arrive en France to discover it had been a very expensive crossing if you see what I mean? i know it's a bit of a fine detail. Euro star would be safer, and they are trying to compete with the ferry prices now. If we did decide to go for the Dover Calais option, it might be worth looking into?
Nice idea btw mark!

On entirely random dates in June:
Portsmouth>St.Malo return= £97.00
Portsmouth>Caen return= £72.00 (2-up it looks to be circa £30 more expensive)
Meh i've just realised those prices are for reclining seats.
Normal seats=
£62 solo Portsmouth>Caen
£81 2-up Portsmouth>Caen
Those don't seem too bad considering June is at the height of summer/tourist season....but what do i know?
The tunnel at its cheapest looks to be about £75+, so the ferry will actually be cheaper when you consider fuel.

I imagine they will have the correct procedures in place, however i will email them to ask. They offer provision for bikes on their site, so they must secure them.
The tunnel isn't that cheap, as the really cheap options are only available for day trips. Even if you travel at really inconvenient times then it will still cost towards £60. For an extra £10 the ferry has to be worth it surely? That would mean we get to spend more time in Brittany, which is better than Normandy. :p
Also we can chill during the crossing and be ready to rumble on arrival.
If its consensus that people want to go via the tunnel, then i'll go with that, but its not much cheaper(maybe more expensive if you consider the extra mileage!) and it restricts us quite a lot in terms of where we can go as it takes ages to get to my place from Calais. We would also have to travel down to Folkstone, which is further away than Portsmouth.
Straps are provided and the car decks have area's specifically for motorcycles. It is down to you to strap your own bike down although they do hang around whilst you do it to ensure it is not going to be flying up and down the deck. If your unsure there will be plenty of other bikes crossing that will be able to give you a hand.

Only if "luggage" was translated as "girlfriend". I was just thinking that if Jo was going by alternative means of transport then I might be able to convince my better half to come along. As it is, there is no way she would get on the back of the bike espeicially if she wasn't able to bring her 20 million outfits, shoes and handbags.

PS - I vote for the ferry. Dont want to waste all my energy driving at stupid speeds from Calais when we could instead be fresh on arrival and ride round the beautiful french countryside.

Sounds great! I'm provisionally in, so long as I have money and green card and time etc etc blah blah
Looks like this could be nice. Hopefully I can tag along. I'll have to check on holiday dates when I go to work on Wednesday.

Can we avoid March / early April. Am changing jobs over this period so I wont be able to make any dates in this time frame. Late April/May would probably be nicer anyway.
I'll have to have a look because, working shifts, it can be a bit of a mare getting time off if any of the other supervisors have holiday booked.
Howw many days are we talking about do you think ??

Probably a long weekend.....
This won't take place in May(thats pretty certain) as i have my finals then and i should probably do some work. :)
I'll have to wait until my exam dates are finalised, before anything is offered. Going by previous years, then they should be all done by early June at the latest.

Ferry sounds like the best option.. I guess it's just down to dates and when we can all get together.

Like today for instance! ;)
Today was a calculated gamble. My sick note was valid for 4 weeks. This was actually given to me before I went in theatre for the operation. I was supposed to be having the finger amputated. For which I was given the four weeks off work. As we know this turned into minor surgery but the sick not still stands and does not actually state what was done.
Already knowing that I would not be covered by the works insurance policy as I have been signed off sick, I handed the note to my manager with the expected reply.
Now I can spend the next two weeks at home in the knowledge that my boss told me I was not allowed to come back to work rather than them thinking I am taking the proverbial by having 4 weeks off work with a simple finger operation.
As it happens, by the time I got in to work this morning my finger was giving me merry hell pain. It's twice the size as the one on the other hand and looks like it has a severe case of sunburn. Very infected indeed. So the Sundays ride out took it's toll. Even so, it was worth it.
Maybe. Depends when it is, really. May and June are rather iffy with a trip to France already booked, Glastonbury pencilled in, a bike rally in Slovenia and I'm trying to avoid being roped in to Euro2008...
<shuts down excuse generator>
Sounds like a great idea for a long weekend. I'm a bit iffy over the summer with my dates as well so unlikely I can make it - will watch with envy though...

I don't see why not, but you should probably come to a meet or 2 before the event, so we can decide if you're up to scratch. :)
I don't think that's a good idea, people generally don't like me :)
 You'll fit right in then.

If I came I might also like to bring the Mrs as Simon has said. I'm sure she'll fit in though. Everyone loves her. Cow.
