I got the exhaust system brought home to scrub on Friday night, and settled down to doing it this evening....but what I've found is that that brown downpipe is soooooo brown I can't get it shiny. The damn thing won't get like the black bikes pipe for love nor money
so
apart from taking it to a nice man to do it for me...is there an easy way to get em done, using a little elbow grease??
i've tried alsorts and so far.....nowt:smt105
Have you tried using scotchbrite to get the layers of crud off before using the solvol, Dizzy?
dizzyblonde
11-02-08, 10:03 PM
yep. didn't budge a jot
dizzyblonde
11-02-08, 10:05 PM
have also tried, 240 wet n dry, and fine wire wool and nothing........its still brown
aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhh
Ok, fairly drastic, but if the pipes are off, try oven cleaner. It sounds like there are years of carbon deposits baked on.

i used wet and dry before and that did the trick but as lissa says this needs drastic action, mmmmmm what to do?

ah now i got mr muscles oven cleaner under the sink....will it really??? that stuff eats holes don't it
ere then it would be loud....lol
Check the instructions, but I would have thought it won't damage stainless steel.
kwak zzr
11-02-08, 10:20 PM
it aint stainless steel is it? or if it is its a very shi#y grade of s/steel, personaly id still give it a go. even clean polished pipes go brown and its a bugger to keep them shiney silver.
Pretty sure they're stainless Kwak, even if low grade. They're certainly not mild steel or chrome.
Search out a bike dealer who stocks Loyblox. Get one of each grade and work down from coarse to fine with them, then get the Solvol out.
dizzyblonde
11-02-08, 10:24 PM
yeah they're naff grade stainless, they always go brown if left, well its too late now, the Mr muscle has gone on half of it in the kitchen sink, so one or the other is going to end up with a hole in it!!!

Damn, was hoping for some sparkling piccies of ya down-pipe dizzy ;-)
Nothing perverse ... just that I have a similar problem ... I tackled mine with some of those scouring pads made from wire-wool that also contain a detergent (bit like brillo pads but cheaper) ... took me ages to get the downpipe to even shine ... and as for the top nearest the outlet ... pah! forget it! ... which is sadly what I did with the rest of it also ... just haven't the time/weather/inclination to get out there and constantly polish it ... I'd much rather RIDE the damn thing :riding: :D

I've actually written the name of that stuff down to go to asda and buy. Thank you!
Folks, are you trying to get it back to completely Stainless? The only reason I say is because as soon as you take it out for a decent ride and come back, its already beginning to stain and change colour. Ive had it completely Stainless before but its too much of a chore to keep on top of it. Now I like it shiny but not too bothered if theres still a little staining on it. At least I dont need to put that extra effort into it. After all it is only the downpipe. and gets hidden by the bellypan
dizzyblonde
12-02-08, 10:27 PM
right this is odd stuff..its a powder, you can either apply onto a wet cloth and rub( if its slightly tarnished) or turn it into a paste like substance similar to a toothpaste consistancy( trial and error). I did the paste way and let it sit on it for a while and kept rubbing it with green pads, washed it off thouroughly and then give it the autosol.
bearing in mind my pipes looked like this
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/2008_02120031.jpg
after faffing with this stuff...a little messy but i'm obsessed at the moment, it starts 'bleeding' brown stains, scrub a dub dub and it goes a not so very shiny this---
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/2008_02120032.jpg
wash it all off and dry it for this
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb45/loubi650/2008_02120033.jpg
then autosol to this

its not as perfect as what you would get it kwak, but they were really bad and for it to lift the crud off the rear pipe was a miracle. Its not a simple wax on wax off but its a handy tip of the day i think

daft thing is its going to be covered by a bellypan, Lissa could you answer me a question?? How do you change an oil filter with a Roca bellypan? and polish the downpipe too?
I'm rather enjoying this polishing lark, just my hands don't like it. By the way this stuff smells all lemony
Nice job Dizzy:D
You've got the bug now though...............you'll be buying a polishing wheel next;)
To answer your question about the bellypan, you have to remove it for an oil change, and it's easier to pop it off for doing the downpipes too. It's ever so easy, just 4 bolts, and because it fits perfectly it's a doddle.
There used to be some stuff called 'Vim' on sale in the UK. It sounds very much like that. Sort of abrasive and detergent?

just wondered cause of the bolts fitted the right hand clutch casings can be a bugger if you knacker em. i'm so looking forward to having her back now. I'm missing her can, that scorpion on the black sounds like a bake bean tin..lol. but it looks sooooo shiny!!!

I know what stuff you mean, my gran used to use it, don't know about this stuff though, it proclaims its been around for a 100 years! in asda?????:smt103
If I take the full system off to polish it can I just re-attach it with what I've got or do I need to replace the gaskets?

:D:D:D
You've obviously never taken a full system off before, have you?
It's a B*TCH!
It can be done, but Pete swore...................a lot! You may possibly need one new seal, unless you split the system.
dizzyblonde
12-02-08, 11:12 PM
I believe you'd have to replace the gaskets.. but I'm not the mechanic...cue chris!!
oh and it'll take you about three weeks of soaking and a stud extractor to get the exhausts studs out, thats right after you anglegrind the nuts off the studs, its not a quick job
Nope, never!
Maybe I'll just have to swear a lot and do it while its on the bike.. might be harder but at least I'll stay OTR :P
I do like taking things apart though....

glad to be of service. Its an odd thing to use, and a faff, but it works to some degree. Suppose it depends on how mucky it was in the first place. Oh and I found it eats the corrosion off polished rims, but you have to be careful with it, followed by brasso wadding

Nah stick it back on, mine's been off once as standard, didn't leak with original gaskets.
The front washer is a right bugger to get out, and you stand a fair chance of damaging something, so you might as well leave it in. Unless the washer is actually disturbed then there's nothing to distort on fitting, so leave it alone.
If in doubt use a smear of exhaust sealant.
petevtwin650
20-02-08, 08:58 AM
Yeah I think what YC means is don't disturb the joint between the front pipe and the rest of the system. That's got a Teflon type gasket and it's a hell of a job to get the two parts of the exhaust pipe back together. You can get the whole system off in one go. I found it easier with the can still attached. Gave me extra leverage. I changed the front gasket in the head as a matter of course as I didn't want to faff around if it did leak. Also be aware that you can't even see the gasket really until you start to prise it out with a screwdriver or whatever.
