Hi all, havn't got an SV yet (:() but am looking at selling my car to buy an SV as my first big bike to save a bit of money while at uni!! (And also for the fun factor!)

Seen a few SV's I absolutely love... but lack of bike licence and funds right now are a real pain in the you know what!!

Anyway, you all seem very friendly and it's a great site, so thought i'd introduce myself!

Morning :-D

Where are you based etc?

Which particular sort of curvy are you looking for? :-P

Thanks for the fast replies! I'm in Oxfordshire at the mo. Looking for either a fully or half faired curvy.. prefferably in blue or black. After market yet legal can is almost essential because although I don't want to show off (Well maybe a little) i want to be seen and heard by other road users and not just end up another statistic and a victim of SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn't See Ya!)

Road legal can's don't sound anything like as good, and a race can on the stock system isn't obnoxiously loud.

feeelthapowah
13-02-08, 12:38 AM
Aslong as it will pass an MOT and the police won't try and screw me over every 5 mins then the louder the better!

yorkie_chris

If you're worried about loudness at MOT's then you're going to the wrong MOT station.

Welcome!

TBH I dont think youll have much problem with a removed baffle type (almost race can). Sounds VERY nice :D.

Worth getting the test done soon, I think its october when it becomes rediculously hard to pass the test. :(

Definately, when it comes in there'll only be 2 test centers in the whole of Yorkshire.

How young is young? Will you need to restrict the bike? If you do for ease Id advise getting a Pointy as its SOOO easy to restrict/un-restrict.

see if your university has a motorcycle society; they may well subsidise your CBT (if not your DAS) and have preferable rates with a local training school and maybe even bike dealerships. Good luck! Oh and welcome aboard :)

Firstly, a bike while at uni is an excellent idea; you'll save alot of money :D which means more money to spend on go-faster bits ;) or maybe just less debt.

Secondly, welcome to the site.

Thirdly, get your theory test done, get your CBT booked for april and if you can, training sorted out aswell.

Fourthly, dont feed the animals. Specialy hovis.

Hiya! Where abouts in Oxfordshire? me and Philbut live in Oxford and often go for rides, plus look down to the regional sections of this forum and join the TVSF!

When you get a bike I suppose actually, would be useful for the ride-outs haha

Wow! Lots of replies!! Thanks for the warm welcome guys! Being a student and all I can't really quite stretch to a pointy, looking more towards a curvy around the £1000-1500 sorta mark (Depends on what my car sells for!!) I live just outside Bicester, so not too far from Oxford! When I finally get a bike sorted would be nice to actually meet some SV owners and find out what i've really got myself in for!! :smt042 Just out of interest.. How many people on this site are from Oxfordshire/Northamptonshire??

His name is John Wheeler, good chap, and you pay per lesson and use his bike (GS 500), which is handy,
I’m from Witney, used to work near Bicester at the old airfield, taken my bike down the runway a couple of times. Apparently the road between Bicester and Aylesbury is meant to be a good biking road, but I prefer Bicester to Thame.
You’ll have to try them out when you get a bike

Yeah a friend recommended him a few days ago! Would I still be able to ride his GS500 even though i'm only 18? Both are good roads, but the A41 Bicester - Aylesbury road has killed god knows how many bikers over the last few years, but if you take it easy I can see how it would be brilliant on a bike! I've got a few friends in and around Witney so when i've got my bike I may pop over just to say hello!!

I don’t know if you can ride his GS500, if not he’s got 6 other bikes.
I know there are different tests depending on your age. I know that you wont be able to ride anything that has more than 33bhp for the 1st 2yrs or till your 21.
So if you do get an Sv650s your gunna have to get it restricted, though I don’t think it slows it down that much anyway.
Here’s some info on the licences, you have to start off with an A licence I guess.

Test Vehicle Requirements

Motorcycle - Minimum Test Vehicle Requirements for a Practical Test
Moped
Engine capacity not exceeding 50cc, maximum speed of 50 kph (31mph). If first used before 01 August 1977, it must be equipped with pedals by which it can be propelled.
Light Motorcycle (A1) See Notes 1 + 2 + 3 + 4
Engine capacity 75 - 125cc, Motorcycle - Minimum Test Vehicle Requirements for a Practical Test11kW (14.6bhp max). If the engine capacity is between 120 -125cc and maximum speed can exceed 100kph (62.5mph) a category A1 licence will be issued.
Standard Motorcycle (A) See Notes 1 + 2 + 3 + 5
Engine capacity 120-125cc,11kW (14.6bhp max). Capable of exceeding 100kph (62.5mph).
Accelerated Access (aged 21 or over) See Notes 1 + 2 + 3
Engine capacity unspecified, at least 35kW (46.6bhp). Speed unspecified.
Direct Access (aged 21 or over) See Notes 1 + 2 + 3
Engine capacity unspecified, at least 35kW (46.6bhp). Speed unspecified.

Notes:
1. Motorcycles less than 75cc are not acceptable for the practical motorcycle test.
2. Only the disabled can use a motorcycle and sidecar combination for the test. The licence obtained will be restricted to such combinations.
3. If you pass your test on a motorcycle with automatic or semi-automatic transmission this will be recorded on your licence. Your full licence entitlement will be restricted to motorcycles in this category.
4. A light motorcycle licence (category A1) will give you full licence entitlement to ride machines up to 125cc with a power output of up to11kW.
5. A standard motorcycle licence (category A) will restrict you for a period of two years, to ride machines with a power output of up to 25kW and a power/weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg.

Condensed version: You're 18, so you'll need to do the test on a 125cc.

lol, cheers for all the info and support guys! :D I think it's a crazy idea that you have to take a theory test, even if you already had to take one to get your car licence. I understand that there are different risks when on a bike, but surely if you've been driving for a year or more you will already begin to understand what is acceptable and what is stupid on a road (Unless you're some numpty in a 'maxxed out' Nova or worse!)

Anyone else have any views on this?

Lol.

How much is the theory test now?

Remember the government we're dealing with, do you really expect common sense is involved even slightly?

It's not the theory test that i'm disputing, I think it's a good idea, it's the fact that you have to re-take you're theory test, even if you've already been driving on the road for more than a year

yorkie_chris
14-02-08, 11:48 PM
Possibly a good idea, I don't think it helps much as it's not really got much to do with on the road riding/driving, clicking a button at a screen is far removed from actually avoiding/braking etc. But that's not really anything to do with the question at hand.

My point is, you prove you can do it once. ?20.

You put that into practice, then have to prove the same thing again, and pay another ?20.

Which in my mind makes them a bunch of money grabbing tossers.
