View Full Version : People at work...concerned... I really don't think so!!!!
Right so I returned to work this morning following Drew?s off, having had Monday and yesterday off without using my holiday (nice company).
Following the first hour of how is he, is he alright, are you alright and everything like that, it has now started!!!! Apparently I should tell Drew that it?s the bike or me!!!! I?m sorry but everybody at my work can @*&^%$?^*@ :smt093
I would never ask Drew to even think about giving this up, it is something he has gone on about since we started dating and in November we were able to afford it so did it!!!
Why should I ask Drew to choose between me and the bike, if I really begged I know he would give up the bike, but I don?t want him to.
I have finally stopped crying over what happened on Monday to be told horror stories all morning of bike crashes and people dyeing to which has ended me up crying again, over what could have been. We know he was lucky, but I don?t want to think of what could have been I?ve come back to work cause at the moment when I look at him I think about what could off been.
Currently just nodding at the people I work with but next person to say you should make him give it up?..might be surprised at the answer they get!!!!

Go "virtual-lid-shopping"
Goolge for Arai or Shoei, find a site with lots of designs and then as your co-workers their opinions on design/style etc
Show them that not only will you not be asking your man to give it up, but you are going to be doing it yourself.
With my recent off the worst thing was phoning home to say there had been an incident and, when I got home (I wasnt hurt) I asked my wife if she wanted me to give it up
She told me where to go with that "soppy cr@p" so now the Sv is written off, new bike is on order :)

It's an emotional time ... and people who don't ride, just don't understand. Ask ANY of them, "Have you NEVER had an accident of ANY kind?! If you have, did you consider giving up the thing that may have caused the accident?". See what responses you get to that ...
At the end of the day, Drew had some bad luck (to come off for no apparent reason) ... anyone can suffer "bad luck" ... you could accidentally and uncontrollably spill boiling hot water over your hand whilst making a cup of tea ... would you stop drinking tea because of this one incident?
If you can't reason with them, then as hard as it may be, just ignore them ;-)
Good luck :grouphug:

Hehe.....now that has made me laugh.
On a serious note. If for one minute I thought "I had done something wrong" then I would seriousley be thinking......should I be doing this.
I love Lily more than my biking, but she knows how big a dream this has been of mine. In my eyes, her collegues don't know me, so am a bit cross how they can criticise me this way. My work have been great, just backing me up and being concerned, buit cause they know me and they can see me coming to work with a smile everyday cause of the bike, they know it means a lot to me.

Can only imagine your frustration Lily. The last thing you want to think about is "what could have been".
Totally agree with the donut tactic -
and totally agree with learning to ride yourself just to shut them all up!!! and then you can be a beginner with me!!
People are so quick to critisize when something bad happens. Try and ignore all the horror stories that you hear. If you are anything like me you are concerned enough when they go out for a ride, you don't need these stories popping back into your head everytime they go out for a ride.
Im like you, I'd never ask Phil to choose between me and the bike (I'd lose anyway!) but the point is, I don't want him to choose. He is doing something he loves and something that makes him happy, why would people presume you want to take that away from them?? UUUUGH Some people aye!
Don't let them get to you.
Maybe we should all take a ride to your work and make a lot of noise and show you our support!!!

Thats my girl, keep the smile on your face. Not worth letting the idiots get to you.
My parents had it after my accident in sept-"ohh i bet you dont want to let her get on a bike" Tell her she would be safer in a car" ,"If she was my daughter id tell her to move out if she bought another bike" etc- To which my parents have replied that its my life and they know of 2 people that had car accidents not long after me and came off WORSE than i did!!

Drew said I can't learn for a bit because he couldn't deal with what I had to deal with on Monday.
Work is just off the M5 at Junction 3!!!!! :p
I had this when Mr Lou was knocked off his bike. We worked together at the time, and what got to me was his colleges reaction. No sympathy, just a serves him right attitude.
My answer to similar questions of are you going to stop him riding was, (and I ride too), No, if he wants to give up then he's going to have to ride pillion with me.
And what people say and think when I tell them that I want my daughter to learn to ride, they think I'm a heartless insane mother.
SO WHAT?
Keep riding Drew, I'm looking forward to a summer ride to the Malverns!!
Lou x
PS, glad to say that the bad junction in Evesham where the accident happened has been changed now. Oh yes, and the lady that hit him got banned, so that was a good two fingers to our collegues!

I know how you feel - i had alot of " you should tell him to give it up" when falc had his off especially from his family i would never ask him to give up the bike i ask only that he doesn't commute into London on it

I think once drew is back on his bike...he should drop me into work one day on the bike and pick me up. We all leave at the same time, so if I walk out puting my helmet on and jump on the back of drew's bike....i'm sure i will have the concern from the old bags the next day!!!!

Going to feel the same when Vixis gets on the road on her own wheels - its only natural.

The constant remarks are upsetting as i full well know and i`ve let it get to me but i`m learning to live with it. I even had my yearly appraisal at work yesterday and my manager asked me to consider giving the bike up.... she feels its putting me at risk of having lots of time of work in the event of an accident! She says, and these were her actual words "its only a matter of time before you end up in hospital and in plaster or god forbid in a mortuary" very pleasant :D

I am stunned at this!!!! Can't believe that your employer says that. I checked my boss was ok with me having time off, not that he could do anything, but I just wanted his view.....he was fine as he appreciates that people have accidents in many different ways.

that is extremly out of order, what you do in your personal life has no place being bought up in your appraisal. I'd not be to happy about that being said to me. In fact it would have made me really annoyed or I would have terminated the appraisal and got up and walked out. You houldnt have to put up with that cr*p at work.

I'd tell your friends and colleagues how they have made you feel and suggest that you dont talk about biking with them anymore. Or you find some new friends. Nobody has the right to make you feel like they do.

PMSL that ace:thumright: I haven't read the entire thing but hey you have to do what makes you and you alone happy! Also one of my friends at work is like I don't how you ride, your crazy dude, but he knows why!
Also my parents are more concred about me on the bike than at work, umm go figure that one! I take risks but that is totally my choice.
Its nothing to do with them, also you don't see them out of work so not an issue, I work with people I don't like, I just put my gear on and ride, who cares what they say, they are not a friend, I don't spend my free time with them, so whatever....Goodluck, I just walk away its easier sometimes. But they will never understand so they are missing out big time, also would you want them to be a be a biker?

One of our male nurses does a lot of long distance running and he`s always preparing for some marathon or other. He`s constantly off with strains and a bad back but nothing is every said to him. I wonder is it cos the marathons he runs are always run for charity?
lets face people who don't bike are always gonna comment negatively its a fact - just ignore them its not worth arguing with them they won't/don't
understand.

most people are just worried about family member i remember when Falc had his off what his family (and me) went through its not nice seeing someone you care about smashed up.

It's only a matter of TIME before we ALL end up in a mortuary :D now there's a pleasant thought for the day
The only time I have given anything up for my employer was when I broke my toe during a Karate training session (wouldn't mind but I wasn't even kicking anything ... my sensai "decked" me during a game of British Bulldog - well them's the rules LOL), and so I had to borrow my dad's car (an automatic) because I couldn't drive my company car cos the pain was unbearable when using the clutch! As most of my days were then spent driving around the north west of England to visit client sites (as an IT consultant) I thought perhaps I'd better pack this Karate malarkey in before I break something more serious (like a sweat :-P)
But, at the end of the day, THAT WAS MY CHOICE. My employer didn't try and sway my decision either way, and that's the way it should be.
IMO.
My employer got me into biking :) He has 3 bikes of his own!

Just spoken to Lily, she is having a better day today at work, I think it was mainly that people were shocked as was first time she went in.
All that matters is that she knows how much the biking matters to me and so will support me 100% through it.
As for Speedy Claire. I would like to re-iterate what people have said above.....AR$EH0LES!
Hope they don't give either of you two (Lily or Claire) any more greif.
Claire I can't believe that was said to you, that was out of order in an appraisal.
I have been asked if I consider my bike to be dangerous, and I know my boss is jumpy now I've got the 1050, he just tells me to be careful and come in on Monday in one piece.
I did tell him that I had worse injuries from my car accident, than I did from my bike accident.
20 years on and my back and neck still play up from the car. Bike accident was 8 years ago, and I walked away with a bruise on my leg.
I have it the reverse way round. Nobody else in the office has a bike, so they say to me, words to the effect, 'please don't crash this weekend, cos if you get killed we'll be out of work'. I tell them that I'll add 5mph each time they say it.

Sorry to hear that Lou but i`ll make sure i tell my colleagues of your experiences!!! I have to admit my manager has been extra nice to me since my appraisal. Claire, I would consider her remarks as discrimination, and tell her so. Would she ask a horse rider to give up? You can be killed or seriously injured falling off a horse.
As I well know...I am still sitting in a rubber ring  ;)
Drew - hope you are ok mate
