View Full Version : Thou rear wheel nut size
Folks,
I just noticed how huge the wheel-nut is on the back of the thou. I'm guessing 36mm (please correct if wrong). Given a 36mm socket is about £20-£30 anyone know if there is any issue in using any of the bearing removal sockets you see on Ebay for a lot less money?
Not fussed if it's 3/8", 1/2" or 3/42 drive as I can fit a torgue wrench to any of those, just wondered if anyone has had any issues with any of these more specific sockets.
Cheers,
Mark

I'd be mega-surprised if it were 36mm! The curvy 650 rear axle nut is 22mm. I have a 36mm socket in my collection (why?) and I'm damned sure I didn't pay £20-£30 for it. £6-£7 perhaps. I wouldn't have bought one if it were more. Oh no sir!
Oh I remember; for the steering stem top nut on my old beemer. Needs 100Nm torque or something daft.

It's 36mm you need.
Look here. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Draper-24781-Elora-1-2-drive-36mm-single-hex-socket_W0QQitemZ270198167820QQihZ017QQcategoryZ309 17QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l124 7QQcmdZViewItem)
I've a 36mm socket too, Volvo 740 rear hub nut...
now got no need for it...
edit :- i've decided to keep it as when I get another bike it might have that size nut on the rear axle...

My 36mm socket (GSXR rear axle) cost me about £6.00 I got an impact one although I would never use my windy impact on a bike. The only reason for buying it was I have 36mm in both 3/4" and 1" drive (tool tart) but it would have cost a damm sight more to buy a "small" 3/4" drive torque wrench.
Cheers folks. And yes, it's a lot bigger on a thou than a 650. There seem to be loads of Saab bearing sockets, mini pump sockets, BMW filter sockets all 36mm all a lot less than a standard 36mm hex socket. Now I know for sure it's 36mm I'll go have a poke round my local boot sale this weekend.
Luckily I've got a scott-oiler so the chain tends not to grow too much (never worked out why) so have a bit of time before I need to get the big nut off.
Cheers,
Mark
Turns out Halfords do a single 36mm impact socket for a mere £8. Bargain.
