Loft insulation

Has any one had there loft insulated latley ?
just trying to find out how people when about getting it done cheeply...
I've been up in the attic and messured up, 7m x7m and there is 20 runs.
there is some insulation up there but its old and cack.. 5cm thick...

I'm looking at insulating my garage (my garage renovations are going a bit OTT :D), so will keep an eye on this thread. I'm not sure it's the most economical (they usually aren't), but Focus have a 3 for the price of 2 on rolls of insulation which are coated in thin tin foil like material (a bit like the blankets given to marathon runners). Supposed to provide even better insulation as well as prevent itches when you're handling it.

Not sure where the cheapest place is to get insulation from mate. But one small piece of advice is to make sure you put some over the loft hatch - most people don't bother and its amazing how much heat is lost through this area.

Recently helped a mate of my lad to do up an old house. We just went down to B&Q and bought Fibreglass / Rockwool insulation rolls and DIY. However, there are grants available through you energy provider for insulation, to meet government targets for carbon emission reduction. Rick could not take advantage of this as he had no supplier (house was derelic).

Richie what you mean by cheap? Not sure of your budgets but there are companies out there who for £250 will board the loft and install a proper ladder/hatch as well.

Insulation wise I will 2nd the proposal for buying sthing with silver "dressing" around it as mine doesn't have this and you get bad rush after a while messing about with it.

Whatever you buy make sure you board the loft in the end as well cause that will make things EVEN better plus you end up with loads more storage space.

Best place to get cheap insulation from is a traders yard, They will always sel it you cheap for cash whether you are genuinley trade or not.

One thing though if your going to do it your self, buy a cheap boiler suit or a disposable one, as well as a good face mask.

My sky installer refused to go into the loft and wanted to throw a wire over the house (WTF). So I went up in the peak of summer, it was 40c+ up there so obviously I was in shorts and shirt. I had fibre glass rash pretty much everywhere the shorts and tshirt was not covering and got a chest infection not long after from breathing in the fibres. bloody nasty stuff.

When you do it, don't completely block up the eaves, you could get condensation if you do. If you have a cold water tank, insulate it but do not insultate between it and the ceiling. From personal experiance, wear a hat as splinters from the rafters in the head hurt lots and are really tough to get out.

Had a bloke come round today, from *** energy to do a survay on the loft space...
he nearly took a minute to get in the loft and 3 minutes to get back down the ladder...
I think he might have been scared of heights, anyway
Whilst he was up there he didn't messure up.
after we came down stairs he said he wanted to messure the floor space, to which I said I've already messured it and its 7mx7m, Why he didn't messure it up whilst we were up in the attic I don't know...
so he says they will get back to us with a quote.
