Nice looking bike, i was wondering how does it compare to the sv? i mean power related with only being a 100cc more, i'm thinking of up grading and i want to stay with a twin so am looking at the 748/749, your opinion would be appriciated.

My other half has a 749S having ridden it and the SV. There is no comparison.

It might only be 100cc more but there 749 I think has around 40bhp more than the SV. Also it rev's like a IL4 does, if you keep it on the boil its amazing to ride. It out handles the SV in everyway you can think of and more. The brakes are fantastic better than they are on my GSXR, much more feel. Its a very focused bike, it doesnt like to be ridden gently or slowly, everything needs thinking about and concentrating on, to much of a pansy with the gear lever and you'll miss a shift, you have to be positive with everything you do. The harder and faster you ride it the more it comes to life. Liz's 749 even has a power band, seriously it does, rev it past 6000rpm and you get big surge of power and then your on the rev limiter.

Downsides.

It doesnt make a good commuter or town bike, the mirrors are sh*t, its easier to trap your wrists between the tank and bars on full lock. You have to keep it in the right gear at the right time otherwise you get a lot of chatter back through the transmission. I.e town riding at 30mph requires first or 2nd gear only. Anything more and it bogs down badly and it complains about it. The side stand is sh*t and I dont trust it as it bends and flexes and it doesnt feel sturdy at all.

I dont know what a 748 would be like as I havent ridden one, I'd image the same, except I think the 748 has a different riding position to the 749.

In short if you want a step up from the SV but dont want an IL4 SS600 bike, that you get out go for a ride and then put away again, you wont beat it.

Oh and James I don't think your bike is a 748R, I dont think they come with pilion pegs. Looks like an S with a single seat conversion.

Unless you use them :rave:

Get out and ride it, whatever the weather, whatever the time :D

it is an r has full ohlins (shock, damper, forks) + slipper clutch & is listed as an r n the log book. last & only owner added rear pegs wanted to take his wife on the back on day trips :smt075 so i have another seat unit as well.

but well spotted I never noticed it at first, until i went to view it a second time with the deposit.

I hope your geing the R sub frame as well because you can't put pegs on the original so they must have changed that. I'd want the original as well if it was me and put it back to standard, there not designed to take pillions it would just be wrong.
There was a 748R for sale on the duke forum last week for ?3000, thats a lot of bike for your money. I hope you got a bargain.

yeah without sounding cheeky, how much did it set you back?

what the miles and age etc? also what group insurance do they fall under?

I assume u did your homework on owning one of these, so out of interest, what are the servicing intervals and how much are they each time? any dodgy probs with them to look out for?

Would love a bike like that, absolutely gorgeous! speaking of which, get some more piccys up matey!! :D

e.d I see that you went from the sv to the 749 i'm thinking of doing the same, what are your thoughts on the difference between bikes and reliability, cost of running and servicing?

Read what I wrote above, I'm e.d's other half, it was her 749 I was refering to ride wise.

Reliability, its never missed a beat. It had some niggles when we bought it, but that was due to lack of TLC by the previous owner and the fact it has been stood in a dealership for 9 months. Half the trouble you hear about is because they bikes dont get ridden regularly, the more often you ride it the more reliable it will be. If you buy the later gen 748 or 2nd generationj 749 it'll be fine as Ducati do their R & D on the first generation of bikes which is why theres all the trouble with the 1098's and recalls etc etc.

Service interval is larger than the SV's is, the dealer labour rate in the Ducati dealer we take it to is less per hour than the labour rate of the Suzuki dealer where my GSXR goes.

If you like twins you'll love it.

Stewie - I think the Ducati forum Liz uses is www.ducatsti.co.uk (http://www.ducatsti.co.uk)
