View Full Version : is this dodgy?
i think theres somthing strange about this, maybe im just being paranoid?
this is a reply to an e-mail i sent about a bike (i have not got the guys phone number)
hello sir,
in this moment i'm i italy in divorce with my wife.
My 2002 Honda CBR900 FIREBLADE is in excellent condition. I bought it new while I was working in Germany now I am back to UK and I want to sell it. The paint on the moto has not been altered and is original from front to back there is no collision damage present on the motorcycle. This bike transmission shifts like it just left the factory. The engine in this bike runs smooth as silk. It has all the documents and is registered in UK .
It is located in Bristol - England. If you are interested I can ship you the moto and I will arrange for a 5 days inspection period.
I will pay for the transport to your home address.

thats either dodgy, or the persons first language is not english, which makes me more inclined to think its dodgy.
It reads like one of those scam nigerian adverts does. IMHO dont touch it with a barge pole unless you can go and look at the bike in the flesh at the registered address on the V5.
Personally I'd still not bother.
why would he pay to send it to me on a 5 day trial?
why is it nearly half the price of any others?
if he bought it in germany its probaly an import (not sure what differance this makes apart from in kms and the headlight)
i think im probaly being a bit nieve(?) but, if he sends it to me, what have i got to lose?
alternativly i could go and have a look
but at that price, somthing is not right?

If it seems to good to be true, then it probably aint.
Go look at it and meet the guy in person, and HPI it. Be very careful.

Yes sounds well dodgy, don't reply its sounds like a scam to me.....as other said bother, no V5 ect I wouldn't go there as you can't compare the frame numbers ect with the V5.
I once played along with those, to see what happen I set up a fake email addy ect, well after asking to see the bike about 5 times never replied back as it knew it wasn't getting a penny from me....
Go with it and see what happens. Bet he will want payment first. Or want your bank details or something. Go with it and see what happens next.
I'd not want to give him my address though.
He seems very eager to get rid of it, who the hell offers to pay to ship the bike to someones home address for a 5 day trial. :smt101. If i were you Hovis i wouldn't risk money on a bike like this. It's probably his ex wifes bike and he's trying to sell it to get back at her :geek:

The essence of a con trick is that it relies on a person's greed or naievity or both! If you couldn't afford to get your driveway done because all the reputable firms quoted you too much and then some pikey offered to do it for, say, two grand less you wouldn't be surprised if they bodged it and scarpered would you?
This stinks even worse than that rubbish analogy but it might be fun to play along until you can figure out the scam...

I bet you any money he will want you bank number and sort code as security whilst you have the bike, where he will empty your account, and no bike will ever appear
Hey Hovis, I've got a unique offer for you. I've got these magic beans see, the grow into plants, well HM Plant Fireblades to be precise. Only thing is I can't let them go without a lot of administration. They're secret you see, genetically modified by scientists that used to work for the the third reich in fact. So, the bean, and I can only let one go at this price, is 20p. The admin fee is ?2500*. I'll give you a money back guarantee if it don't work.
What do you say mate? Want one?
*Administration costs are non-refundable.

Where was the ad?
I would NOT give him my address, but I would go and look.
yeah, 9 times out of 10 its too good to be true but every now and again....
If you see it and go through all the usual HPI checks and don't part with any cash until its a done deal, then you have nothing to lose.
i think i will email him saying i want to go and look at it at his home in bristol, he has my email adress (can he do anything with it?), but i wont give him my adress and defantly no bank details, if the log book matchs the bike and its in his name, what else could be wrong?
and its only in bristol so xan maybe i could pick up some of those third reich magic beans at the same time

Hovis, walk away from this one please. I smell something dodgy about it; it might seem like the perfect bike but there may be no bike, he might just be out to do you over ands make a runner with your dosh.
You'll find your fireblade, don't worry about that. Just don't go for this one

Hovis - Its dodgy!!! plus a good reason not to buy is that all german bikes are restricted to 100bhp!! walk away.
cant see there would be any harm is going to see it. or get the taffia lot to go en masse. i think its something to do with his divorce. wifey wanting half of everything. if he sells bike quickly he has cash which he can hide from her
then again im very gullible

I am curious how this is going to end up :-)
me too............. if its restricted i dont want it. and TBH i think you have put put me off it, which is probaly for the best, but, what harm can it do just to go have a look?
& how do these scams work?
if its HPI clear
if all numbers match log book
if its in good nick
what could go wrong? i would be paying cash.
what could go wrong?

Nothing in that scenario. I suspect though you'll get an email back saying something like.
Please tell me your bank details etc etc full payment required up front, payment done by bank transfer etc etc and you wont get given the opportunity to go look at the bike or pay in cash, because cynical me think that the bike doesnt exist.
Have you spoken to the guy over the telephone, thats what I'd do next. I reckon your wasting your time and I personally wouldnt even bother.

Personally I would be thinking along these lines,
The bike is nicked from abroad, he is going to use your name /address to import it and see if anything happens. I know he said its in bristol but do you have proof of this?
He is just after your address, gathering bikers address for a little shopping trip.
Or as mentioned before, he will want a guarantee before he posts it, namely your bank acc. Scam
Good luck
The words "barge" and "pole" come to mind.
If in doubt dont bother, its bound to be a rip off of some kind.
Just keep loking and your find the right blade, or the right blade might find you!
just as expected..............
i emailed him asking a few more questions, the reply i got did not answer any of them,
hello again sir,
the bike will be inspect to gumtree company before it will be in your hans.all i need are your full details to proceed and for paymnet, gumtree company will contact you.so please send me your full name, address, city, postal code and phone number.
i'm waiting your answer.
have a nice day
he will be waiting a long time

If you wanted a bit of fun you could send him false details... and then wait until he asks for them again and then play him at his own game...
I read another thread on another forum where somebody did just this and strung the guy along for about 3 months I think, it was very funny.

I spoke to a guy once with this model fireblade, it was a french import and therefore restricted to 100bhp aswell. He couldnt find any simple way to derestrict it; it must be electronic, and therefore need a new ECU?

Does HPI work on imports? How has it got warranty? (Sorry, couldn't be bothered to read all the posts).
Even if it is dodgy I'd go to look to see if it's a ringer and try and spot some dodgy things about it. Might help you in the future. What happened with that bike in Cricklewood? Anyone volunteer to have a look for you? If not and it's still there I'll stick my head in if you want but I wouldn't know too much what I'm looking at apart from general condition, straightness and maybe wear and tear.
