View Full Version : HELP! - Bike Not Starting (Ticking Noise)
Hi guys and girls,
I've got a K4 SV650S and it not starting...just making a ticking noise and all the displays are flashing/flicking. It happend after I washed the bike, but it was only a light sponge down and a spot of lube on the chain...I can see how this could cause it!
I'm new to all this...hence I'm asking the experts!
Cheers in advance

Ok, start with the simple stuff.
-If the clocks come on, but it won't start - check the engine kill switch.
-If it's not the kill switch - check the sidestand switch/clutch switch.
Thought I'd put money it's number 1!
Thanks
Luke

Cheers Luke,
Just been out to the garage to check both of them out, both seemed fine...then on my third attempt the battery died!:(
If you have got any other ideas then let me know...looks like I need to buy a battery charger tomorrow!

Hmmm, a battery shouldn't die that quickly, which make me think that either the battery is goosed (and it's just a coincidence that you washed it at that time) or maybe it's just flat -left the ignition/lights on maybe?
Anyway, as you say, go with the battery charger

It stopped starting after I had washed it on Saturday, and been trying it every now and again since then...so its not just the 3 attempts.
I'll go with the battery charger (more money!)
Cheers again!

Have you checked that the battery leads are clamped tight on the battery?

Try jump starting it from a car with jumper leads ... the battery is under the riders seat, or just directly do it at the starter motor (the cable that goes to it is the +ve, earth out the -ve anywhere on the frame).
Remember, you are turning the motor here, so once started, remove cable! ;)
Have you checked that the battery leads are clamped tight on the battery?
Thanks for your help people!
Top marks to Pete, the negative lead was loose on the battery and sparking when I tried to start it. The screw just drops in as if the battery connections are threadbare (seems odd as this is the first time I've touched the battery since owning the bike!) The bike is starting and running fine when the connection is taped down so I know this is the problem.
So is it a case of a new battery as the theads seem shot, or are there tricks of the trade?
Thanks again

Had a similar issue - seems that the captive nut on most batteries are the same.
I just took the nut from an old battery and swapped them.
So find another dead battery and pinch the captive nut.
You may even be able to get a normal nut in there which would also work :)

Actually, what am I thinking.
Batteries come with 2 of these, and I only used one off of my old battery.
PM me your address and if its still there I will post you the spare I have.

i have the same problem on my bike, it bump starts but when i press the starter buttom there is a click from a lil black box under my seat, i think the box is a circuit breaker of some kind but does anyone have a clue what it could be? it has 4 wires coming out of it and has a circuit drawing on the cover.

Sounds like your starter solenoid. Either your battery is flat or you have a bad connection(s) somewhere. Can you turn your lights off before you start to help the battery?

the light opnly work when the engine on (but its always like that) i think it must be the starter solenoid as the battery is only a month old and did work when i jump started it.

The clicking is the Solenoid not getting enough juice to it.
IMO, if it starts with a jump then it's your battery, or a dodgy connection. Maybe your rectifier is gone and the new battery has got overcharged and died, or it's not getting enough charge.
How old was the other battery and why did you get a new one?
It's running!!
A good charge and replacing a missing captive nut (supplied by SoulKiss, delivered by Jambo - thanks guys!) its going like a dream!
Thanks again for your help

um i dont reli know, i only got it in agaust and it was the in it then, i replaced it after it was left out on the side of the road for a night after breaking down (plug failure) and it wouldnt hold its charge for over an our or two. ooo did i say jump last time i ment bump
It's VERY easy to accidentally leave the parking lights on (read: useless) after a ride or cleaning the bike. I've done it and it knackered the battery.
