Hi one and all.

After being guest at another areas meeting I have to say we were properly shown up.

It's great when you get a bunch of like minded bikers together and really is good fun and brings the community together. I realise that we are all busy people but we've recently changed the night to make it easier for people to turn up. Just a bit of a shame really that we don't get as many. Perhaps we could make the meet once every fortnight if it means more people came along? I also have no problem travelling into Guildford for the meet, afterall it is the GM massive.

I'm not trying to make waves, I just would like to see a more vibrant meeting. Please don't think I'm trying to be bossy (not my style at all) I just enjoy meeting you guys n' gals.

By the way last night had ice, fog and icy fog and people STILL rode their bikes. Stop being such big tarts and get your bikes out.:D

Why not do what was decided by us on Saturdays rideout in the South Mids. Have weekend meets...People can make a Sunday normally. Just a suggestion for maybe an extra turnout.

I've been trying to make a meet since I got the bike but weekday evenings (regardless of which one almost) are fairly difficult for me to do.

Which one did you go to Dan?

The TV meet.

I'm all for changing if it gets more people out and about.

Having been to a few of the GM meets it would be nice to see a few more peeps turn up on bikes!

Having been to SelKent meets as well as regularly at Soho one thing stands out. People turn up on bikes!

Just my thoughts!

My preference would be for the Anchor any night Mon to Thu.
To be honest I'll never turn up to the Ely, if you want a fortnightly meet there it doesn't bother me at all just don't expect me to be there.
I don't mind the Brittania
The 4 horses in Chobam is OK but I prefer the Anchor.
I like the idea of the meet being in the same place on the same night every week. Your much more likely to get into a routine of knowing it's on and going. All this fortnightly stuff makes me less likely to go. When Monday comes I have to think is it the Ely or Guildford tonight? & if it's Guildford I then think well I survived not going last week so I'll not bother tonight. That's just me.

I would be dead set against changing it to the Surrey Massive as that would not achieve anything, it would still not include Falc Tara Dan Grant? etc.

Oh & whatever happens I will only turn up by bike

to be honest the Britannia is a bit far for us which is why we normally go to the Ely - if it likely to stay at the Brittania then i'm more likely to defect to the TV section

Stu - i like the Anchor too - it would be nice in summer.

As for turning up on bike all well and good but its a meet not a rideout whats the problem and there will usually be more bikes in summer when the weather is better - i for one will always be in the car (or i won't bother coming) as i don't have any gear and am unlikely to be to be in a position to get any for a while

Stu
20-02-08, 10:41 AM
So would you more likely turn up to the Anchor than the Brittania?

Tara
20-02-08, 10:41 AM
TBH, when the weather's better I'm happy with wherever because I'll likely go out for a ride after work for an hour, end up at whichever pub it is, stay there for an hour before nailing it off again for another hour's ride.

Thats a damn good point - i think most people will feel like that

Tara

both the same distance i think as far as I am aware - but if i had to make a choice as to which one i would go to it would be the anchor

I'm a bit torn here, I live in Farnborough so the Ely is close, but I work in Godalming so Guildford isnt a real problem either.

I've never been to any of these so can't comment:

Brittania
Anchor
4 Horses

The last time I went to the Ely was when there was no "no smoking" ban, and it was that bad I couldnt see the bar. I aint been back since.

I'd try to be on the bike, where possible, but if I've took the car to work, theres less chance I'd get it out afterwards.

This will sound like a really odd question - but can you take dogs into any of these pubs?

(I take mine to work, ya see)

IMO the problem isn't the venue or day it's that there just aren't that many people in the GM catchment area.

Would seem foolish to move any meets closer to TVSF territory, if that happened then the two sections may as well be amalgamated.

I agree with you Sarah and as for the two sections amalgamating i don't think thats a bad idea either (don't flame me its only MY opinion)

Tara

i think your right about the Anchor not being dog friendly anymore Lee (yeah i know your always right :p) it was done up last year wasn't it? but in summer we normally sit outside..

It's not going to happen so it's not worth talking about, but I don't think they want to be taken over by us (they fought hard to get the section & it seems to be running very well now) & we don't want to be taken over by them. (it took them 45 mins to ride from where they meet in Maidenhead to get to Guildford. Now I am not going to go to Maidenhead to meet for a ride that passes through or close to Guildford, neither am I going to make an early morning meet in maidennhead for a long ride in the NW direction.)

Here's my take on it:

Being the Guilford Section I think the meet should be held in Guildford. It just makes sense. I thought that everyone had almost agreed that the new Anchor wasn't as good as the old one and that they didn't mind changing the location. I think the Brittania is a good pub and as it's in the centre of Guildford it makes sense. We can't please everyone, Guildford me is still a 22 mile ride but I am willing to do that as I enjoy the meets. The Anchor is a little far for me, 30 odd miles away so would prefer not to but I'm also willing to do what the masses want, so long as people actually bother turning up of course. I'm willing to sacrifice a night every fortnight to see my biking buddies, I don't see it as a great hardship. Not having a dig at anyone this is just how I think is all.

Peace and love be with you all. :cyclops:

So how about weekly in guildford then?
Brittania or Anchor as a separate poll.
And we drop the Ely as the people it caters to have proved they're happy to go to the TV (it's not even Dan's local anymore  )

(I thought Lupo went to the Anchor with no problem?)

The GM seems a little like a hedgehog. It hibernates over winter to conserve energy.

The first meet I went to was a December one and it was just the same - a handful of other people there. But I'm sure I remember the meets getting more populated as last year went on.

Yes, I've been an infrequent visitor for ages now. Lots of things in the way, blah blah, boring.

I'm not fussed what mode of transport people turn up on (though the zed did make an appearance last time I was at the Britannia). I know we've all got bike licenses and I'm not bothered whether I sit in a pub surrounded by people wearing leather, unless I'm on one of my special nights out in Brighton with Dan?s Hornet. It?s always been just as much about the social with the GM and that?s an attraction. Anyway, Lupo couldn't ever have come if we banned cars and we'd never have had all those months of mystery over Law's mythical bike if we stopped him coming in the car!
Frankly, if there were late buses, I?d be on those so I could have a few jars.

Anyway, I'm thinking out loud and waffling. I don't see a need to change from Guildford as a way of getting more people to turn up - it's pretty central for most - and changing to weekends may not work, as they?re more precious to some folk. Maybe in the summer we could get a guest pub thing going. Nice places with gardens, just as a change.

I don?t bother with the Ely as it?s an 80 mile round trip. Probably wouldn?t do the Anchor either unless it was the odd summer meet ? nowhere to comfortably sit inside. All a bit restauranty. I guess if the Guildford meets moved from Guildford I probably wouldn?t come at all.

Post getting too long, see you at the Britannia on Monday.

Bloody hell, not active? yet we managed to generate a 3+ page thread in a couple of hours, not bad going :D

Ok reading the comments I propose we.

Drop the Ely meet

Make the Britannia a fortnightly meet on Monday

The weather is picking up now and you will find more and more people coming out, as Lee says there is alot of people who have the bike as a toy and so the car proves more useful on the cold nights. If we drop the Ely as it stands that means the Britannia is one week and the TV meet is another, giving the best of both worlds.

People are just waking up and things will pick up.

Yup, lovely views of the back of Debenhams. There is a carpark outside the front of the pub. It gets busy, but there are normally spaces in the bike parking. Can also park in the coucil carpark which is at the end of the carpark in front of the pub.

Was nice meeting you Dan, Falc & Tara and I am glad you enjoyed the company as much as we did.

I dont want to get involved in your decision making process (cause it isnt my place) - but I have one suggestion. If you do end up with a fortnightly meet then why not make it the alternate week to the TV section. Not trying to cause waves etc but people will be more likely to turn up to both meets if they are on different weeks and that can only be good for both sections.

Personally i think the GM should decide when/where to have their meets, on the basis of their own convenience.

We shoud be nothing more than a secondary consideration.

After being guest at another areas meeting I have to say we were properly shown up.

By the way last night had ice, fog and icy fog and people STILL rode their bikes. Stop being such big tarts and get your bikes out.:D

As said when our meets first started up we often had quite a few people turning up.
If they want to ride in icy, foggy and icy foggy conditions that's up to them i personally don't enjoy it. I did a fair few years of commuting in all weathers, my bike is now my toy simple as that.

Why not do what was decided by us on Saturdays rideout in the South Mids. Have weekend meets...People can make a Sunday normally. Just a suggestion for maybe an extra turnout.

A lot of people like myself have family commitments at the weekends so may well get an even smaller turn out especially when the better weather arrives and people are out riding

Having been to a few of the GM meets it would be nice to see a few more peeps turn up on bikes!
Just my thoughts!

See my reply to Dan above also why would i want to get my bike out for a 5 minute ride to the pub and freeze my nuts off at the same time?

+1
not that i should really get a say as my attendance has been fairly non-existent for a while.

Yeah you're carp!

I know I've said it before but it has to be remembered that we're coming out of winter at the moment.

For many people in this group, their bike is their toy and doesn't come out much in winter.

In spring, summer and autumn I believe it will be a different situation.

Without a doubt.

Whilst i'm here lets get this about turning up in cars and not on bikes sorted out...

We have this same thing come up every so often and the GM meets are and have always been put forward as social meets not rideouts and as far as i am concerned you don't become less socialable if you turn up in a car do you? I like a few others on here ride purely for pleasure and i really get no pleasure in getting cold, wet or cold and wet. If you want to come on your bike then fine but ffs stop b!tching at those who wish to turn up at a social meet in their car. I'll tell you now if it's cold or particularly wet then i will be in my car also if i have come straight from work etc then i will also be in my car.

I don't care if you turn up in a car, jetski or tractor, as long as people turn up.

But........if you don't turn up on your bike expect to be laughed at and called a 'big girl' by me. :D
